To make an iPhone screenshot smaller as an image, crop unnecessary content or export it from Preview as a lower-size HEIC or JPEG. If you only need an easier file to send, use Files to create a ZIP—but that keeps the original image intact inside an archive rather than reducing its pixels or dimensions.
Choose the right way to make the screenshot smaller
“Smaller” can mean a smaller image file, less visible content, or a package that is easier to send. Those are different outcomes. Cropping removes the parts you do not need; exporting through Preview creates a smaller image file with a quality trade-off; compressing in Files creates a ZIP containing the original image.

There is no universal percentage or guaranteed final file size for these methods. The result depends on the screenshot and the export choices you make. Keep the original until you have opened and checked the smaller copy.
Crop the screenshot to remove content you do not need
If the screenshot has unused margins, a long page with irrelevant sections, or other content that does not need to go to the recipient, crop first. This removes visual content rather than merely putting the same image in an archive. Cropping a full-page screenshot to a smaller portion is also supported.

- Open the screenshot in the screenshot editor.
- Drag the crop handles inward to frame only the content you want to keep.
- Check that important text, controls, or context have not been cut off.
- Save the edited screenshot, and keep the original if you may need the full capture later.
Cropping can be a good first step before exporting a smaller image: there is less unnecessary content to retain in the final capture. It does not provide a quality slider, though, so use Preview when you need adjustable image export size.
Export a smaller image in Preview
Preview provides a built-in way to export the screenshot as HEIC or JPEG and adjust the output size. The Size slider controls the size for HEIC and JPEG; moving it left produces a smaller file. Menu names and availability can vary by iOS version.
- Open the screenshot in Preview.
- Tap the actions menu beside the filename.
- Tap Export.
- Choose HEIC or JPEG as the export format.
- Drag the Size slider left to make the exported file smaller.
- Export the image, then open the exported copy and check that the text and details remain clear enough for the recipient.
Choosing between HEIC and JPEG
Both formats are available in Preview’s export flow. The best choice depends on where the file is going and what the recipient’s software accepts. If you are unsure about compatibility, check the destination’s upload requirements or ask the recipient before replacing a broadly usable copy with another format. Preview can also export images in other formats, but the documented Size slider applies to HEIC and JPEG.

Balance file size against readability
Moving the slider left reduces the output size, but a smaller image may not preserve every fine detail as well as a larger export. This matters especially for screenshots of small text, charts, or interface controls. Export a copy, inspect it at a useful viewing size, and adjust the slider again if the result is too difficult to read. Do not delete the original simply because the export completed.

Files can make a screenshot easier to share as an archive. This is useful when the recipient can open ZIP files or when you need to send a package containing the original image. It is not image compression: the ZIP contains the original image and does not change its dimensions or pixels. Apple describes this as a way to send a smaller version of the file, but the contents remain the original image.
- Locate the screenshot in Files.
- Touch and hold the screenshot.
- Tap Compress.
- Share the resulting ZIP file rather than the original, if an archive is acceptable to the recipient.
If a website upload form expects an image file, a ZIP may not be accepted. Check whether the destination accepts archives before using this method. If it specifically needs a JPG, HEIC, PNG, or another image, export an image copy instead.

Set the format for screenshots you take in the future
To choose how future screenshots are captured, open Settings > General > Screen Capture. The available capture choices are SDR and HDR: SDR screenshots use PNG, while HDR screenshots use HEIF. This setting is for future captures; it does not convert or compress screenshots already saved.

HDR captures more brightness and color, and an HDR display is needed to see the full quality. If your priority is straightforward compatibility, choose SDR/PNG. If you already have a screenshot in the other format, use an export workflow to create another copy rather than expecting this capture setting to change it.
Find the original screenshot in Photos
Screenshots are saved in Photos. To locate them, open Collections, then Media Types, then Screenshots. Menu labels may vary with iOS version. Starting from the original makes it easier to compare the exported copy against the capture and to retain the untouched version while checking the result.

Troubleshoot common problems
The exported image is still too large
Check that you exported from Preview as HEIC or JPEG and moved the Size slider left. If the screenshot contains large areas you do not need, crop them before exporting. There is no fixed reduction percentage to expect; inspect the saved copy and adjust the export rather than relying on a promised file size.

The text looks too soft or difficult to read
The exported copy may be too small for the details it contains. Export again with the Size slider farther to the right, or keep the original for situations where legibility is critical. If the screenshot includes irrelevant regions, crop those away rather than making the remaining text harder to read.
The recipient cannot open the file
Confirm what format the recipient or upload page accepts. A ZIP archive requires an archive-capable recipient or upload flow; it is not an image file. HEIC may not suit every destination, so export JPEG or use the format the service requests.
I cannot find the screenshot or the expected menu
Look in Photos under Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. For compression, open the file in Preview and use the actions menu beside its filename. If a label or option is absent, iOS version and feature availability may differ; use the available crop or export option, and do not assume Files’ Compress command alters the image itself.
I need to keep the full-page capture and send only part
Crop the full-page screenshot to the portion that answers the recipient’s question, then export a copy if you also need a smaller image file. Retain the complete original separately if you may need to revisit material outside the cropped area.
