The right method depends on what “automatically” means. For one immediate image of everything on a display, use your operating system’s full-screen shortcut or capture mode. For screenshots every few seconds or at scheduled times, use an interval or scheduling utility and grant its screen-capture permissions. Before choosing a workflow, decide whether you need one monitor or all monitors, a desktop image or a browser page, and a single capture or a repeating series.

Choose the capture you actually need

“Full screen” can mean the current display, every connected display, or the complete contents of a website. Those are different jobs.

  • One desktop snapshot: a built-in shortcut or Snipping Tool is usually sufficient.
  • A delayed snapshot: use a built-in timer when you need time to open a menu or arrange windows.
  • Repeated screenshots: use software that explicitly supports interval or scheduled sessions. Saving screenshots to a folder does not create a schedule.
  • A webpage image: a website screenshot API captures the page independently of your desktop; it is not a substitute for recording local applications.

Also check the scope: current display, all monitors, a window, or a drawn region. The same “full screen” label does not guarantee the same multi-monitor behavior in every application.

Windows: take a full-screen screenshot once

Print Screen for an immediate image

  1. Arrange the displays exactly as you want them captured.
  2. Press PrtSc (sometimes labelled Print Screen). Windows places a static image of the entire screen in the clipboard, as documented by Microsoft Support.
  3. Open Paint, Word, an image editor, or another destination and press Ctrl+V, then save the file.

This is a one-time capture, not a repeating job. If you use multiple monitors, verify whether your Windows build places all displays in the copied image and crop or capture a specific display when necessary.

Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
  2. Choose the snip mode menu and select Full screen.
  3. The tool immediately captures the entire screen. Microsoft describes this mode as: “Full screen: Immediately captures a snapshot of the entire screen.”
  4. Annotate if needed, then save the image. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions can automatically save captures in the Screenshots folder; automatic-save behavior and the default folder can be changed in Snipping Tool settings. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation.

Add a delay when the screen needs preparation

In Snipping Tool, set the delay to 1–5 seconds, start the snip, and use that time to open a menu or switch windows. A delay still produces one capture; it does not repeat automatically.

Windows: what to use for recurring captures

Windows’ built-in full-screen features document snapshots, clipboard handling, saving, and delay—not an unattended interval schedule. For a timed series, install a utility whose documentation explicitly promises interval or scheduled capture. Configure its source (display, window, or region), cadence, output folder, image format, and stop condition. Test with a short run before leaving it unattended, because lock screens, sleep, changing display layouts, and permission prompts can interrupt a session.

macOS: permissions come first

Allow screen capture

macOS tools that capture displays or windows require Screen Recording permission. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording and enable the application, then restart it if macOS requests a restart. Labels can vary by macOS release, so follow the permission prompt shown by your installed version.

One-time and scheduled sessions with Shotomatic

Shotomatic’s quick-start documentation describes scheduled capture of a screen, app window, or selected area on macOS. It recommends a first run of five screenshots, one second apart, with a short countdown; that is the vendor’s example configuration, not an independent performance test.

  1. Grant Shotomatic Screen Recording permission so it can read displays and windows.
  2. If you enable automated keypresses, window focusing, or Action Capture clicks, grant the separately requested Accessibility permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
  3. Choose one display, a window, or a selected region.
  4. Set the schedule or interval, destination, and export options.
  5. Run the short test, inspect every file, then start the longer session.

Shotomatic describes selecting one display for a session. If you need every monitor, confirm that behavior in the version you installed rather than assuming that “full screen” means all displays.

Repeating interval capture with Pluely

Pluely documents two automatic modes: Once and Interval. Its documentation says, “Interval captures a screenshot and asks a question automatically every set number of seconds, on a repeating loop.” The feature is documented as a Pro feature and is designed to provide screenshot context for questions about changing visual content, so treat it as a visual-assistance workflow rather than a general archival recorder.

  1. Enable Pluely’s Screen Recording permission when macOS prompts you.
  2. Select Interval, choose the cadence, and start the loop.
  3. Turn the loop off when finished; verify where the session’s captures are exported.

Pluely’s region capture can be drawn on whichever display contains the desired content. That differs from a tool that selects one display for the entire session.

Linux: identify your session before automating

Linux screenshot behavior depends on whether you are using X11, Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland, and how your distribution packages the application. ksnip documents a full-screen mode that can include all screens/monitors on supported platforms, but its portal path has important limits.

  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
  • On GNOME Wayland 41 and later and in Snap builds, ksnip documents portal screenshots as the supported route.
  • A compositor-mediated popup may require confirmation. That can prevent truly unattended capture.
  • Portal behavior varies by compositor, so test the exact desktop session and package you run.

Check your session type (for example, X11 versus Wayland), launch one manual full-screen capture, and watch for a portal confirmation. If unattended operation is mandatory, a confirmation dialog or locked session is a design constraint—not a setting you can safely ignore.

Set up a reliable interval or schedule

  1. Define the event: one screenshot, a fixed number, or a loop that runs until stopped.
  2. Select the source: one display, every display, a window, or a region. Record the exact choice in your procedure.
  3. Choose cadence: use the shortest interval that answers your question; faster capture creates more files and storage without improving a slow-changing scene.
  4. Choose output: set a dedicated folder, lossless PNG for text and UI, or JPEG/WebP when file size matters. Confirm naming and timestamp behavior.
  5. Prevent interruptions: keep the machine awake, disable display sleep for the session, and avoid changing monitor connections.
  6. Run a short test: inspect the first several images, confirm the intended monitor and dimensions, and verify that the process stops as expected.
  7. Monitor storage: estimate files per hour from your interval and check free disk space before a long run.

Common failures and fixes

The image is blank or black

On macOS, revisit Screen Recording permission and restart the app. On Linux Wayland, look for a portal confirmation or compositor limitation. Protected video and other application-specific restrictions may also prevent pixels from being captured.

Only one monitor appears

The utility may define “full screen” as one selected display. Reconfigure the source, use a tool that documents all-monitor capture, or capture each display separately and keep the files clearly named.

The schedule ran once and stopped

Check whether you selected a one-time mode, set a finite screenshot count, or enabled a countdown rather than an interval. Choose an explicitly labelled repeating or scheduled mode and confirm its stop condition.

Clicks or keyboard actions do nothing

Shotomatic documents Accessibility permission for automated keypresses, window focus, and Action Capture clicks. Enable that permission only for the app that needs it, then restart the app if requested.

Linux asks for confirmation every time

That is consistent with portal-mediated capture on some GNOME Wayland and Snap configurations. Test whether your compositor offers an approved persistent flow; otherwise, plan for supervised capture rather than promising unattended operation.

Files are missing or unexpectedly large

Confirm the export folder and naming template, then calculate expected volume from interval × session duration. Use PNG for crisp interface text and JPEG/WebP for smaller photographic captures, subject to the utility’s available formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a screenshot folder setting make captures happen automatically?

No. A folder controls where completed images are saved. Repeated capture requires an interval or scheduled mode in a utility that documents that capability.

Should I capture one display or all monitors?

Choose deliberately. Tools differ: some select one display, some draw a region on a chosen display, and ksnip documents an all-monitor full-screen mode on supported platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Linux behave differently from Windows?

Linux capture is mediated by the desktop session and compositor. X11, Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland, and portal or Snap packaging can expose different capabilities and confirmation requirements.
