YouTube Help currently recommends that size, accepts JPG or PNG, and states a minimum width of 640 pixels. Build the canvas at the final dimensions, or crop an existing image to 16:9 before resizing it. Keep width and height linked in Photoshop so people and objects are not stretched.
Choose the correct thumbnail target first
The right dimensions depend on where the thumbnail will be used. A regular video and a Short do not use the same shape.

The often-copied 1280 × 720 figure is still a valid 16:9 image size, but YouTube lists it as 720p HD video resolution, not as the current custom-thumbnail recommendation. If you are making a normal video thumbnail in 2026, use 3840 × 2160 unless a specific production workflow requires a smaller file.
These dimensions are technical requirements, not a promise of more views. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that a particular color, font, or pixel size improves click-through rate.

Create a new thumbnail canvas in Photoshop
- Open Photoshop and choose File > New. Interface names can vary slightly by Photoshop release.
- Set Width to 3840 Pixels and Height to 2160 Pixels. Confirm that the units are pixels, not inches or centimeters.
- Use a landscape orientation. The linked dimensions produce the required 16:9 ratio.
- Choose a background or leave it transparent while you build the design. Transparency is useful during compositing, but the final JPG export will not retain it.
- Create the document, then save an editable Photoshop file (PSD) before adding graphics. The PSD lets you revise text or replace a frame without degrading the exported image.
Starting at the final pixel dimensions avoids an extra interpolation step. It also gives you enough working area for sharp type and detailed subjects, while the 16:9 canvas matches the shape used by standard video thumbnails.
Resize or crop an existing image without distortion
When your source photo or video frame is not already 16:9, do not type unrelated width and height values into separate fields. That forces the subject to stretch. Use one of these two workflows instead.

Use Photoshop’s Image Size controls
- Open the image and choose Image > Image Size.
- Enter the required pixel width or height. Keep the proportions link enabled so Photoshop maintains the original aspect ratio.
- Turn on Resample when you need to change the total number of pixels. Adobe’s Image Size documentation explains that Resample changes pixel dimensions; choose an interpolation method appropriate to whether you are enlarging or reducing.
- If the source is not 16:9, cancel the dialog and crop or recompose first. Returning to Image Size after the crop lets you enter 3840 × 2160 without squeezing the image.
- Inspect fine details and text at 100 percent, then zoom out to a small preview. A composition that works only when enlarged on your monitor may become unreadable in YouTube’s interface.
If a 4:3 photograph is enlarged directly to 3840 × 2160 with proportions linked, Photoshop will preserve its shape and one dimension will fall short of the target. That is expected: crop, add a designed background, or accept a smaller output rather than distort the photograph.
Compose for a small YouTube preview
Pixel compliance does not make a busy design legible. Keep the main face, product, or action away from edges that may be covered by interface labels. Make headline text short enough to read when the thumbnail is displayed much smaller than the Photoshop document.

- Keep one clear focal subject and establish contrast between it and the background.
- Use a typeface with thick strokes and sufficient contrast. Check the design at a small preview size before exporting.
- Leave breathing room around faces and critical words so a crop or responsive layout does not clip them.
- Do not assume a thumbnail rule guarantees performance. These are practical design checks, not a documented YouTube ranking formula.
Keep your text and subject on separate layers. You can then change a title, move a face, or create a Shorts version without rebuilding the entire composition.

Export a file that YouTube will accept
- Keep the PSD as your master file.
- Choose File > Export > Export As or the export command available in your Photoshop version.
- Select JPG for a compact photographic thumbnail or PNG when you need lossless edges, transparency during an intermediate step, or graphic-heavy artwork.
- Check the exported file size. YouTube states a 2 MB limit for video thumbnails uploaded from mobile and a 50 MB limit from desktop. If a mobile JPG is too large, reduce export quality gradually or resize the working copy while retaining the PSD at full resolution.
- Open the exported file outside Photoshop and check that the colors, text, and crop look correct. A successful export can still contain a typo or an accidental hidden layer.
Do not confuse these limits with podcast-thumbnail limits; YouTube lists those separately. The figures above apply to standard video thumbnails.
Upload the thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select the video you want to edit.
- Open the video’s thumbnail controls, choose the option to upload a custom thumbnail, and select your JPG or PNG.
- Save the video details. YouTube notes that changes can take time to appear in every surface.
Custom video thumbnails require a verified account and must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. Meeting the dimensions does not override those requirements.
When the thumbnail is for a Short
Create a separate Photoshop document at 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16) for a Short. Do not place a regular 16:9 design inside a vertical canvas and assume it will display identically. YouTube says vertical videos with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may show an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image remains available in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.

YouTube currently says custom Shorts thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio on a computer. Check the thumbnail controls for the Short itself rather than applying the standard-video workflow blindly.
Common Photoshop and upload problems
The image looks stretched
The width and height were probably changed independently. Reopen the original, enable the proportions link in Image Size, and crop or recompose to 16:9 before entering the final dimensions.

The file is rejected for size
Confirm how you are uploading. Mobile video thumbnails have the 2 MB limit; desktop uploads have the 50 MB limit stated by YouTube. Export a JPG with a lower quality setting, remove unnecessary metadata, or use a smaller working copy while retaining the high-resolution PSD.
The design is blurry
Check whether the source was already low resolution. Enlarging cannot recreate detail that was never captured. Re-export from the largest available frame, avoid repeatedly saving a JPG, and inspect the final file at 100 percent.

Return to the crop step and choose a wider composition. If the subject cannot fit a 16:9 crop, use a 16:9 canvas with a designed background instead of shrinking the subject until it becomes unreadable.
The thumbnail still shows the old version
YouTube says changes may take time to appear. Confirm that the new file was saved to the correct video, then allow for propagation before assuming the upload failed.
A Short looks wrong in some feeds
Check that the source is 9:16 and remember YouTube’s stated behavior for vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails: some mobile surfaces may substitute an automatically generated 4:5 image.

A repeatable Photoshop checklist
- Identify the destination: standard video (16:9) or Short (9:16).
- Start with 3840 × 2160 for a standard video or 2160 × 3840 for a Short.
- Crop or recompose before resizing; never force unrelated dimensions.
- Keep proportions linked and use Resample when changing pixel count.
- Check text and faces at a small preview size.
- Export JPG or PNG and verify the applicable upload-size limit.
- Upload from the correct video in YouTube Studio and save.
- Keep the PSD so later revisions do not require rebuilding the artwork.
