The early U.S. 80 GB PlayStation 3 examined by Hardware Secrets used a fanless Delta EADP-260AP power supply. Its listed outputs—+12 V at up to 21.5 A and +5 V at up to 0.6 A—add up to about 261 W of maximum rated output, not a measurement of how much electricity the console normally uses.
This is one console configuration, not a specification for every PS3. The details below refer to the unit disassembled in October 2008; the relevant Hardware Secrets page is section 4 of its 10-part “Anatomy of the PlayStation 3” series, originally published October 9, 2008 and later updated or republished February 24, 2023.
What the “of 10” label means
“The Power Supply” is the subject of section 4 in a 10-part Hardware Secrets teardown. “Of 10” is a pagination label, not part of a power-supply model or a separate technical designation. The companion page says the photographed machine was an 80 GB PlayStation 3 sold in the United States and disassembled in October 2008. It also cautions that other PS3 versions have different internal components. Hardware Secrets’ description of the teardown subject is important context whenever these specifications are used.
Model and chassis identification matters for repair: a later PS3 can differ in its power supply, connectors, board layout, and thermal design. Do not treat the photographed unit as a universal PS3 reference.

Power-supply model and rated outputs
The teardown identifies the supply manufacturer as Delta and the model as EADP-260AP. Its reported output ratings are:
| Output rail | Maximum rated current | Calculated rail power |
|---|---|---|
| +12 V | Up to 21.5 A | About 258 W (12 V × 21.5 A) |
| +5 V | Up to 0.6 A | About 3 W (5 V × 0.6 A) |
| Combined | — | About 261 W |
These are maximum output figures reported for the examined supply. The approximately 261 W total is the sum of the two rail calculations and helps explain the “260” in the model name. It is not evidence that the console draws 261 W continuously, during gameplay, or from a wall outlet. Actual wall consumption depends on operating conditions and conversion losses; the teardown reports no consumption or efficiency measurements. The power-supply teardown is the source for the model and rail ratings.
Connectors and the route of power
Hardware Secrets describes the +12 V output as available at the bottom of the supply through a two-pin female plug. A side connector carries the +5 V output and a connection associated with the console’s front-panel power control, which the article describes as an on/off switch connection.

At a high level, the high-current +12 V rail serves the main system power path, while the lower-power +5 V connection is associated with standby and control circuitry. The front-panel button is not a mains switch: it signals the console’s control electronics. The teardown does not provide a complete electrical schematic or establish the connector’s exact signaling protocol, so this description should not be used as a wiring guide.
Fanless supply, not a fanless console
The examined Delta supply has no dedicated fan and relies on passive cooling and the surrounding system’s airflow. That describes the power supply only: the PS3 itself has a cooling system and system fan. Fanless also does not mean heat-free. Dust-clogged ventilation, inadequate airflow, poor mounting, or aging parts can still affect operating conditions.
The teardown provides no measured temperatures, acoustic readings, thermal margins, or long-term reliability results. A fanless design removes a fan inside the PSU as a potential failure point, but the available evidence does not establish that it runs cool or is inherently more reliable than other designs.

Capacitor brands and what they do—and do not—tell you
Hardware Secrets reports that the capacitors it observed in this unit were from Chemi-Con, Rubycon, and Nichicon. Those manufacturer names are useful component-identification details, not a guarantee that a decades-old supply is healthy or immune to failure.
Capacitor life depends on factors including temperature, electrical stress, age, operating hours, and manufacturing variation. The teardown does not list capacitor series, capacitance or voltage ratings, ripple-current specifications, failure statistics, or endurance-test results. Nor does it document a failure in this particular PSU.

The PSU’s +12 V and +5 V outputs should not be confused with the lower voltages used by the console’s chips. The teardown’s broader account of the early PS3 identifies a Cell Broadband Engine processor, an RSX graphics processor, 256 MB of XDR main memory, and 256 MB of GDDR3 graphics memory. The motherboard’s voltage-regulation circuitry converts and distributes power for components that need different local rails; the available account does not establish a complete conversion schematic. Hardware Secrets’ motherboard and component overview provides the broader system context.

- Package Included: 1*Power Supply Adapter as pictured
In particular, do not infer that the PSU directly supplies the Cell or RSX at 12 V. The teardown mentions an On Semiconductor NCP5399 among motherboard components but does not establish its precise role sufficiently to support a definitive account of the power-conversion stages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why revision identification matters for repair
The EADP-260AP rating is not a replacement specification for every PlayStation 3. Early fat models, later revisions, and Slim or Super Slim systems can have different supplies, connectors, and internal layouts. Before sourcing a replacement, identify the console and the installed unit rather than relying on storage capacity or chassis appearance alone.
- Record the console’s CECH model number and region.
- Note its storage configuration and chassis type, but do not use those details alone to establish compatibility.
- Read the model and output information on the installed PSU label.
- Compare connector arrangement and verify electrical compatibility against reliable revision-specific documentation before replacement.
A supply that physically fits may still have incompatible voltage, current capacity, pinout, or revision requirements. The teardown does not provide a model-by-model compatibility chart or current replacement guidance.

Reliability, diagnosis, and electrical safety
The photographed supply is a historical teardown subject, not a tested repair case. General power-supply failure possibilities include aging electrolytic capacitors, switching-device or protection-circuit faults, fuse failure, cracked solder joints, and damaged connectors or harnesses. These are possibilities, not failures reported in the teardown. A PS3 that will not start can also have a fault elsewhere, such as the motherboard or power-control path; appearance alone cannot confirm that the PSU is responsible.
Safety warning: The PSU connects to mains voltage, and large capacitors can retain a dangerous charge after the console is unplugged. Opening or probing it is hazardous. Internal testing should be left to people with appropriate electrical training, isolation procedures, verified discharge, and insulated equipment. The teardown’s photographs are not a safe live-testing procedure. Do not attempt board-level repair based only on the connector descriptions here.
What this teardown establishes
The Hardware Secrets article documents the model, rated output rails, fanless construction, and observed capacitor brands of one early U.S. 80 GB PS3. It does not establish universal PS3 power-supply specifications, typical or peak console consumption, efficiency, thermal performance, long-term reliability, a full circuit schematic, or compatibility with modern replacement units.
