You can make a YouTube thumbnail in a design app, save it as an image, and upload it to your video in YouTube Studio. For a standard video, use a 16:9 canvas; YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels and accepts JPG or PNG. Custom thumbnails require a verified account. Shorts have a separate workflow: YouTube currently says to add a custom Shorts thumbnail in Studio on a computer.

What you need before you start

  • A design app: Canva and Adobe Express both document thumbnail workflows for desktop and mobile. You can begin with a YouTube thumbnail template or a blank canvas. Canva’s page describes downloading the finished design to a desktop or mobile device; Adobe Express documents templates, uploaded or stock imagery, branding, and downloads. Availability of individual assets and features can depend on the app’s current plan.
  • An image you can use: Choose a frame from your video or another image you have permission to use. If you use a stock image, check the applicable license and terms in the app.
  • A verified YouTube account: YouTube requires account verification to upload a custom thumbnail. If the upload option is missing, check eligibility and account status before troubleshooting the design file.
  • A way to upload: For standard videos, YouTube Studio supports thumbnail uploads on desktop and Android. The current YouTube Help guidance says custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in Studio on a computer.

These are separate steps: the design app creates and exports the image; YouTube Studio attaches it to a particular video. Canva’s documented workflow is at Canva’s YouTube Thumbnail Maker page, and Adobe Express’s is at Adobe Express’s YouTube thumbnail maker page.

Choose the right thumbnail size and format

For a standard YouTube video, start with a 16:9 landscape canvas. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels and lists a minimum width of 640 pixels. Export as JPG or PNG. The file-size limit depends on where you upload it: YouTube lists 2 MB for mobile video-thumbnail uploads and 50 MB for desktop video-thumbnail uploads. These are platform limits, not a reason to export a needlessly large file; use an image that looks clear at the sizes viewers will actually see.

Use case Canvas guidance Upload size limit stated by YouTube Where to add it
Standard video 16:9 recommended; 3840 × 2160 pixels recommended; minimum width 640 pixels Mobile: 2 MB. Desktop: 50 MB. YouTube Studio on desktop or the documented Android workflow
Shorts 9:16 recommended for an uploaded Shorts thumbnail; 2160 × 3840 pixels listed by YouTube Desktop: 50 MB YouTube Studio on a computer for the custom-thumbnail workflow described in current Help

Limits and recommendations above are from YouTube Help, accessed in 2026. YouTube’s page lists a 10 MB mobile limit for podcast thumbnails, but that is a separate content type and not the standard-video mobile limit. See YouTube’s thumbnail requirements and upload guidance for the current details.

Be careful with vertical videos

YouTube says that for vertical videos, a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image remains visible in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. This display behavior means a landscape design may not look identical in every YouTube surface.

Make the thumbnail in a design app

  1. Start a design. In Canva, search for the “YouTube Thumbnail” design type. In Adobe Express, choose a YouTube thumbnail template or start with a blank design. If you start blank, set the canvas to the aspect ratio and dimensions appropriate to your video.
  2. Choose one clear focal image. Use a still from the video, an image you made, or an image you are entitled to use. Prefer a frame that communicates the subject without depending on tiny details that may disappear at thumbnail size.
  3. Arrange the subject and wording. Keep the main subject and any essential text visually distinct from the background. Make sure text remains legible when the design is reduced. Avoid adding details that do not help identify the video.
  4. Check the design at small size. Preview it at roughly the size it will appear in a YouTube feed. If the main image or wording becomes hard to understand, simplify the layout or increase contrast and text size.
  5. Export an image file. Download as JPG or PNG, then check that the saved file is within the upload limit for your device. App interfaces and plan features can change, so follow the current download prompts in your chosen app.

There is no universal thumbnail layout that guarantees more views or clicks. YouTube’s own description is that custom thumbnails let viewers see a quick snapshot of the content. Make the image representative of the video and readable, rather than promising something the video does not deliver.

Upload a custom thumbnail for a standard video

On Android in YouTube Studio

  1. Open the YouTube Studio app and tap Content.
  2. Select the video you want to edit.
  3. Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
  4. Choose Custom thumbnail, select the image file you exported, and confirm the selection.
  5. Tap Save to apply the change.

YouTube’s Android help also documents editing a standard video’s thumbnail in the YouTube app through Your videos, then the video’s edit controls and Edit thumbnail. The exact controls can differ by app version; use Studio if you do not see the documented option in the YouTube app. The Android-specific instructions are at YouTube Help for Android.

The desktop workflow may also offer Get suggestions. That is an alternative to uploading your own design, not a step required for a custom image. YouTube’s current computer instructions are on its thumbnail help page.

Add a custom thumbnail to a Short

Shorts are the important exception to the phone-first process. YouTube Help currently says, “Custom thumbnails for Shorts are currently only available to add in YouTube Studio on a computer.” Make the image in your design app, export it, then use Studio on a computer to add it to the Short. YouTube recommends a 9:16 image for an uploaded Shorts thumbnail and lists 2160 × 3840 pixels. The desktop limit listed for Shorts thumbnails is 50 MB.

Do not assume that the standard-video Android thumbnail flow applies to Shorts. If the custom option is unavailable in the mobile app, use Studio on a computer and confirm the current Shorts instructions in YouTube Help.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a thumbnail design app: it can capture a webpage image that you can use as a source asset in a design, but you still need to create and upload the finished thumbnail using the workflow above. The API accepts one GET request with a URL and returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a webpage screenshot as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. If you are eligible, YouTube Studio on desktop can test up to three title and thumbnail variants. YouTube documents advanced-features eligibility and restrictions, including exclusions for Shorts and certain video states or audiences. Treat this as a way to compare eligible variants in YouTube’s own workflow, not as a promise that a particular design will outperform another. Troubleshooting thumbnail problems

  • No custom-thumbnail option: Check that the channel account is verified, that you are editing the intended video, and that you are not applying the standard-video phone steps to a Short. Use the computer workflow for a Shorts custom thumbnail.
  • Upload rejected or file too large: Confirm the export is JPG or PNG and within the limit for the device and content type: 2 MB for a mobile standard-video thumbnail, or 50 MB for desktop video and Shorts uploads. Re-export at a suitable quality and size if necessary.
  • The image looks cropped or different in feeds: Check the source aspect ratio and remember YouTube’s stated 4:5 replacement behavior for 16:9 custom thumbnails on certain surfaces for vertical videos.
  • The new thumbnail does not appear immediately: YouTube says changes can take time to appear. Save the video details, then allow time for the change to propagate before repeatedly replacing the image.
  • “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached” appears: YouTube says limits can vary by country or region and channel history; its guidance for this error is to wait 24 hours before trying again.
  • YouTube rejects the design or removes thumbnail privileges: Custom thumbnails must follow Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as possible grounds for rejection; repeated offenses can result in loss of thumbnail privileges. Replace the image with compliant artwork and consult the current policy guidance.

Make the thumbnail accessible and accurate

Keep the image’s promise aligned with the actual video. A thumbnail can emphasize a key moment or subject, but misleading imagery creates the wrong expectation. Use readable text sparingly, maintain clear contrast, and avoid relying on color alone to distinguish important elements. The image is viewed at different sizes and on different screens, so inspect the exported file rather than judging only the full-size canvas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before upload, use this final check:

  • The design matches the video and does not imply content that is absent.
  • The subject remains recognizable at small display size.
  • The file has the intended orientation and an accepted format.
  • The size is within the upload limit for the device and video type.
  • You have permission to use the image and any included assets.
  • The thumbnail follows YouTube’s Community Guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a screenshot from my video as the thumbnail?

Yes. You can select a suitable video frame, save it as an image, and optionally refine it in a design app before uploading. Make sure the result represents the video accurately.

Does a thumbnail app upload the image to my YouTube video automatically?

Not necessarily. A design app exports the image; attach it to the video separately in YouTube Studio or the documented YouTube app workflow.
