How to Take Screenshots Using Windows Paint (Windows 10 and 11)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fastest method: press Windows+Shift+S, choose a capture mode, select the screen area, open the snip notification, then choose Edit > Edit with Paint. For a full-screen image, press Print Screen (often labeled PrtSc or PrtScn), open Paint, and press Ctrl+V. Both workflows work with the built-in tools documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Choose the screenshot method that matches what you need

What you need Recommended capture How Paint receives it
A region of the screen Windows+Shift+S, then rectangular or freeform mode Open the snip and choose Edit > Edit with Paint
A particular application window Snipping Tool window mode Use Edit > Edit with Paint
The entire display Print Screen or Snipping Tool full-screen mode Open Paint and press Ctrl+V, or use the Paint handoff
Only the currently active window Alt+Print Screen Paste the clipboard image into Paint with Ctrl+V

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide covers the overlay, capture modes and Paint handoff. Its screen-copy instructions cover Print Screen, Alt+Print Screen and pasting into Paint.

Method 1: Capture part of the screen, then edit in Paint

  1. Arrange the desktop. Put the window, document or web page you want in view. Close or move anything that should not appear in the image.
  2. Open the capture overlay. Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and Snipping Tool displays its capture controls.
  3. Select a mode.
    • Rectangular snip: drag a rectangle around the target.
    • Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline.
    • Window snip: select a visible application window.
    • Full-screen snip: capture the entire display immediately.
  4. Take the snip. In rectangular or freeform mode, release the mouse button (or finish the keyboard selection). Window and full-screen modes capture as soon as you choose the target.
  5. Open the editor. Select the notification that appears, or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and select the recent capture. The image is copied to the clipboard as well.
  6. Send it to Paint. In Snipping Tool, select Edit > Edit with Paint. Paint opens with the snip ready for resizing, color changes, text, drawing or cropping.
  7. Make your changes. Use Paint’s resize controls to change dimensions, the color tools to adjust appearance, and text or shape tools to label an area. To remove irrelevant edges, crop before adding annotations.
  8. Save the result. Save from Paint to the folder and image type you want. Snipping Tool also documents Save as Image for an additional copy and automatic saving to the Screenshots folder by default; its settings let you change automatic-save behavior or the default folder.

Method 2: Put a full screen directly into Paint

  1. Press Print Screen. The key is usually near the upper-right of a keyboard and may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn. This copies a static image of the entire screen to the clipboard; it does not necessarily open a file.
  2. Open Paint from the Start menu. You can also press Windows, type Paint, and press Enter.
  3. Press Ctrl+V, or choose Paint’s paste command. The screen image appears on the canvas.
  4. Crop unwanted regions, circle or mark important details, add text, change colors, or resize the canvas.
  5. Save the finished image from Paint. Choose a known folder and a format appropriate to your use; the Microsoft material cited here does not specify the current names of every format-menu option.

If your keyboard has no usable Print Screen key, use the Windows+Shift+S workflow instead. An optional USB keyboard with a PrtSc key is another hardware solution, but compatibility and model details vary.

Capture only the active window

Press Alt+Print Screen to copy the currently active window rather than the whole display. Open Paint and press Ctrl+V. This is useful when a maximized window is not the same as the complete desktop, or when you want to avoid capturing a second monitor, taskbar or unrelated application.

Editing choices in Paint

Crop to the information that matters

Use Paint’s crop command to discard browser tabs, desktop icons or empty margins. Cropping before enlarging annotations keeps the important content readable.

Resize without losing the original

Save an untouched copy first if you may need the original dimensions. Then use Paint’s resize controls for a smaller attachment or documentation image. Enlarging a low-resolution snip cannot recreate detail that was not captured.

Add explanations

Text, lines, arrows and shapes can identify a button, error message or region of a diagram. Use a contrasting color and leave enough surrounding space that the annotation does not cover the evidence.

Protect private information

Before sharing, crop out account identifiers and unrelated windows. Paint can cover areas with opaque shapes, but inspect the final image at normal size to ensure the original text is not still visible around the cover.

Where Windows saves screenshots

For the current Snipping Tool workflow, Microsoft documents automatic saving to the Screenshots folder by default and a Save as Image command for another copy. If you cannot find a file, open File Explorer and check the Screenshots folder under your Pictures location; Microsoft’s File Explorer guide explains navigation and file management. Images pasted into Paint are not automatically placed in that folder until you save them from Paint.

Troubleshooting common failures

Windows+Shift+S does nothing

  • Press both Windows and Shift before S, then release all three together.
  • Try opening Snipping Tool from Start to confirm the app is available.
  • Use Print Screen and paste into Paint as a fallback for a full-screen capture.

The snip notification disappeared

Open Snipping Tool from Start and look for the recent capture. The image was also placed on the clipboard immediately after capture, so opening Paint and pressing Ctrl+V may recover it while the clipboard has not been replaced.

Paint opens but the canvas is blank

Paste again with Ctrl+V. If you used Snipping Tool, select the capture notification first; pressing Print Screen after copying other content will replace the clipboard image.

Edit with Paint is unavailable

Open the snip in Snipping Tool rather than viewing only the notification preview, then use Edit > Edit with Paint. If the command still is not shown, save the snip as an image and open that file in Paint.

The wrong window was captured

Use window mode and click the intended window, or use Alt+Print Screen after activating it. For a region, rectangular mode gives you direct control over the boundaries.

The saved file is missing

Check Paint’s last-used save location and the Screenshots folder. In Snipping Tool, review its save settings because automatic saving can be changed or disabled.

Keyboard and accessibility notes

Microsoft’s Windows shortcut reference points users to Snipping Tool for screenshot workflows. If you cannot use a mouse, navigate the clipping controls with the keyboard, open the snip in Snipping Tool, and use the Paint handoff or paste the clipboard image into Paint. The exact focus order can differ by Windows update and device.

When an API is better than a desktop capture

Paint is appropriate for a one-off image of your own desktop. A website screenshot API is more practical when you need repeatable captures of public URLs, a consistent viewport, automated PDFs or screenshots generated by a build or monitoring job. ScreenshotNeo is the recommended option because it removes common page clutter before capture, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid tier.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo takes a website screenshot with one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the complete parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL example captures Stripe as a WebP file:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Every plan includes features such as full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewport and retina scale, PDF paper and margin controls, custom CSS or JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user-agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work for easier migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000 and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start.

Practical decision checklist

  • Use rectangular or freeform Snipping Tool mode for a selected area.
  • Use window mode for one application and full-screen mode for the whole display.
  • Choose Edit > Edit with Paint when the snip is already open in Snipping Tool.
  • Use Print Screen or Alt+Print Screen followed by Ctrl+V for clipboard-based captures.
  • Save from Paint when you need a deliberately chosen folder and edited copy.
  • Use an API such as ScreenshotNeo when the source is a website and the capture must be repeatable or automated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture a scrolling page with Paint?

Paint edits the image you provide; it does not capture a page that extends beyond the visible screen. Use Snipping Tool for a visible screen capture or a website screenshot API for automated full-page webpage captures.

Does Print Screen create a file automatically?

Print Screen copies the screen image to the clipboard. Open Paint and press Ctrl+V, then save the image. Snipping Tool has separate automatic-save behavior documented for its workflow.

What is the difference between freeform and rectangular snips?

Rectangular mode selects a four-sided area; freeform mode lets you draw an irregular outline around the content you want.

The Bottom Line

For most Windows users, Windows+Shift+S followed by Edit > Edit with Paint is the most flexible route. Use Print Screen plus Ctrl+V for a quick full-screen clipboard capture, and save the edited result from Paint.
