For most Ubuntu users, Flatpak from Flathub is the best starting point: it provides a current Shotcut build, supports ARM, and is the option Shotcut recommends for better Wayland behavior. Install it with flatpak install flathub org.shotcut.Shotcut. If you prefer Ubuntu’s native package and its version is recent enough, use APT instead. AppImage, Snap, and the portable archive suit specific preferences but have different compatibility and update trade-offs.
Choose the installation method that fits your Ubuntu setup

Shotcut’s download page displays version 26.4.30, while Flathub and the Ubuntu archive list 26.6.25 in the versions reported for August 2026. Those are different distribution channels, not one universal version number; check the channel you plan to use. The Flathub listing identifies the app as published by Meltytech, LLC.
Check compatibility before installing
Shotcut’s current FAQ lists 64-bit Linux, glibc 2.35 or later, and OpenGL 2.0-compatible graphics as requirements. Its download page targets 64-bit Ubuntu/Pop!_OS 22.04 or later for current Linux downloads. Package formats can differ: Flatpak or an Ubuntu distribution package may work where the portable binary does not. Very old Ubuntu releases may need an OS upgrade or a compatible older Shotcut release.
The FAQ’s hardware guidance is one 2 GHz CPU core and 4 GB RAM for SD editing, four cores and 8 GB for HD, and eight cores and 16 GB for 4K. These are guidance figures, not a guarantee of smooth playback for every codec, effect, or project. Shotcut recommends Preview Scaling and Proxy features on systems near the lower end of its CPU and memory guidance.

For ARM systems, prefer Flatpak or an Ubuntu distribution package. Shotcut’s user guide says those support ARM processors, while the portable archive, AppImage, and Snap builds do not. The guide also identifies Flatpak or the distribution package as better choices for Wayland; this is a preference, not a guarantee that every graphics issue will disappear.
Install Shotcut with Flatpak
On Ubuntu, install Flatpak, add Flathub if it is not already configured, and install Shotcut using its case-sensitive application ID:

Refresh package indexes and install Flatpak:
sudo apt update sudo apt install flatpak -
Add the Flathub remote if needed:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo -
Install Shotcut:
flatpak install flathub org.shotcut.Shotcut -
Launch it from the Applications menu, or run:
flatpak run org.shotcut.Shotcut
For a graphical installation, install Flatpak support and enable or add Flathub, then open the Shotcut listing on Flathub and choose its Install option or open the downloaded Flatpak reference in your software center. The exact prompts vary among Ubuntu Software, GNOME Software, and KDE Discover.
Update or remove the Flatpak
To update just Shotcut, run flatpak update org.shotcut.Shotcut. To update all Flatpak applications and runtimes, use flatpak update. Remove Shotcut with:

flatpak uninstall org.shotcut.ShotcutUninstalling the application may leave user configuration or cache data behind; removing the app does not necessarily erase every file associated with your user account.
Install Shotcut from Ubuntu’s APT repositories
If you want Ubuntu’s native package, open Terminal and run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install shotcutStart it from the Applications menu or run shotcut. To inspect the version APT would install before proceeding, use:
apt policy shotcutUbuntu’s Noble package page lists version 24.02.29+ds-1build1; the version available to you depends on your Ubuntu release and repository state. The Ubuntu archive lists later 26.6.25 packages, so do not assume every release’s APT candidate is the newest build. See the Noble package information and Ubuntu archive.

If Universe is disabled on your Ubuntu setup, enable it and retry:
sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update
sudo apt install shotcutIf there is still no installation candidate, use Flatpak or an official Shotcut download rather than adding an unverified third-party PPA.
Run the official portable Linux archive
Download the Linux portable archive from Shotcut’s official download page, extract it, and run the shotcut script inside the extracted Shotcut.app directory. From Terminal, the general pattern is:
cd ~/Downloads
tar -xf shotcut-linux-*.tar*
cd Shotcut.app
./shotcutArchive names and compression can change, so replace the wildcard with the downloaded filename if it does not match, or use shell completion. Do not run bin/shotcut directly. Shotcut’s launcher guidance specifies the script at the top level of Shotcut.app.

You can move the extracted folder to a location in your home directory if you want to keep it organized. This is a manual placement, not a system-wide installation:
mkdir -p ~/Applications
mv Shotcut.app ~/Applications/
~/Applications/Shotcut.app/shotcutTo keep separate releases, place each extracted bundle in its own versioned directory. This method avoids a traditional package installation but leaves updates and any desktop launcher to you.
Run the AppImage
Download the Linux AppImage from the official Shotcut download page, then make it executable and launch it from its download directory:
cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x Shotcut-*.AppImage
./Shotcut-*.AppImageIf the file manager blocks it, open the file’s Properties and enable “Allow executing file as program” or the equivalent option for your desktop. To update an AppImage, download a newer one and replace the old file; it is not updated through APT.

If Snap is installed and enabled on your system, Shotcut’s download page gives this command:
sudo snap install shotcut --classicLaunch it with shotcut. The Snap uses classic confinement and is based on Shotcut’s portable build; Shotcut says it does not bundle all dependencies and has the portable build’s runtime requirements. Choose it for convenience if you already use Snap, not because it is automatically more compatible than Flatpak.

Launch Shotcut and confirm the installed version
Use the command for the package format you installed:
- Flatpak:
flatpak run org.shotcut.Shotcut - APT or Snap:
shotcut - Portable archive: run
./shotcutfrom insideShotcut.app - AppImage: run the executable AppImage file
Once Shotcut opens, check Help → About Shotcut to confirm the running version. This is more reliable than inferring it from a download filename or a version listed for another package channel.
Install the OpenGL dependency only if needed
Shotcut’s Linux dependency notes list libopengl0 as required for Ubuntu, Debian, and Mint. If Shotcut reports a missing OpenGL library, install it with:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libopengl0JACK audio libraries are optional, not a general prerequisite. If your audio workflow needs JACK connectivity, Shotcut lists libjack0 or libjack-jackd2 as options; you generally do not need to install either just to edit video.
Troubleshoot common installation and startup problems
Flatpak installs, but Flathub is missing
Add the remote and retry the installation:
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install flathub org.shotcut.ShotcutShotcut does not appear in the application menu
Try launching the Flatpak directly with flatpak run org.shotcut.Shotcut. If it starts but the menu entry is still absent, log out and back in so the desktop menu can refresh.
APT cannot find Shotcut
Check whether Universe is enabled and whether the package exists for your Ubuntu release and architecture. If Universe was disabled, enable it as described in the APT section. A missing candidate can also reflect an unsupported release; in that case, use a supported installation method rather than assuming the command itself is faulty.

The AppImage will not run
Ensure it has execute permission, then run it from Terminal so an error message is visible:
chmod +x ~/Downloads/Shotcut-*.AppImage
~/Downloads/Shotcut-*.AppImageIf the message identifies a missing OpenGL library, install libopengl0 as described above.
The portable archive does nothing when launched
Open the extracted Shotcut.app directory and run ./shotcut. Shotcut specifically cautions against launching bin/shotcut directly.
Shotcut opens to a white, green, or blank preview
This can indicate an OpenGL or graphics-driver issue; reinstalling Shotcut alone may not fix it. Update Ubuntu, ensure libopengl0 is installed, and check your graphics driver and desktop session. If you are using the portable, AppImage, or Snap build, try Flatpak, which Shotcut recommends for better Wayland behavior. In Shotcut, reduce preview demands with Preview Scaling or use Proxy features when your system is near the lower end of the stated hardware guidance. Your Ubuntu release is older than current downloads target
Shotcut’s current download page targets Ubuntu 22.04 or later, and the current FAQ lists glibc 2.35 or later for Linux. Older non-Flatpak guidance cited a glibc 2.31 baseline, but that historical requirement should not be treated as the current compatibility promise. Depending on your release and hardware, options include upgrading Ubuntu, trying Flatpak if your system supports it, using a distribution package, or locating an older Shotcut release. Check the requirements for the specific build before installing; no single older release is suitable for every Ubuntu version and architecture.
