If a game says OpenAL32.dll is missing, repair the game first, run its bundled OpenAL installer if available, and then install the official OpenAL 1.1 Windows Installer. Do not download a random DLL from a mirror or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. Those files can be the wrong version, wrong architecture, or unsafe.
This guide covers missing-file messages, entry-point errors, 0xc000007b, and games that launch without sound.
What the OpenAL32.dll error means
OpenAL is a 3D-audio API used by many games and multimedia programs. OpenAL32.dll is the Windows library name applications commonly request; it is not normally a protected Windows system file.
“OpenAL32.dll is missing” or “was not found”
The program cannot find the library where it expects it. An incomplete installation, antivirus quarantine, a deleted game file, or an OpenAL runtime that was never installed can cause this message.

“The procedure entry point could not be located”
The file exists, but it may be the wrong version or implementation. A mod, unofficial patch, or manually copied DLL may have replaced the build the game expects.
Error 0xc000007b
This commonly indicates a dependency or 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, but OpenAL is not always the cause. A 32-bit game needs 32-bit-compatible dependencies even on 64-bit Windows.
The game starts but has no sound
The missing-file problem may be resolved while the audio device, configuration, driver, OpenAL implementation, or legacy EAX behavior remains incompatible. Use the audio-specific checks below rather than repeatedly replacing DLLs.
First determine whether one program or several are affected
Only one game or application fails
- Corrupted or incomplete game files are the most likely explanation.
- The title’s bundled OpenAL installer may not have run.
- A mod, launcher, unofficial patch, or antivirus product may have changed or quarantined the file.
- The program may be loading an incompatible copy from its own folder.

Several programs fail
Consider a removed shared runtime, antivirus quarantine, cleanup software, or wider Windows corruption. Try the official OpenAL installer, then use DISM and SFC only if other Windows components also show problems.

Before repairing
- Copy the complete error, including the program name and any number such as
0xc000007b. - Note whether the problem began after an update, mod, antivirus alert, or cleanup.
- Back up saves and configuration files before reinstalling or removing mods.
- Close the game and launcher, restart Windows, and install pending Windows updates.
- Do not delete every copy of
OpenAL32.dllyou find; different applications can legitimately ship different copies.
Fix 1: Verify or repair the game files
Use the launcher’s repair function before substituting a generic DLL. It can restore the exact OpenAL build, configuration, and related dependencies expected by the title.
Steam
- Open Steam and find the game in your library.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Locate the installed-files or file-verification option and run it. Steam’s wording can change; use the current option shown in the Properties window. See Steam’s file-verification support page.
Other launchers
Use the launcher’s Repair, Verify, or equivalent command. If no repair option exists, back up saves and settings, then reinstall the game. Test once with mods and unofficial patches disabled.
Fix 2: Run the OpenAL installer included with the game
Look in the installation directory for oalinst.exe, an OpenAL, Redist, Prerequisites, or Support folder, or an older binwin32 folder.
- Close the game and launcher.
- Run the bundled installer. If it fails normally, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows if requested, then test the game.
Aspyr documents examples including Neverwinter Nights, where oalinst.exe is in binwin32, and certain Infinity Engine games version 2.6 or later, where the installer is in the game’s root folder. Its guidance recommends using the installer instead of copying a random DLL: Aspyr’s OpenAL and Windows instructions.
Fix 3: Install OpenAL from the official source
Download the OpenAL 1.1 Windows Installer from the official OpenAL downloads page: openal.org/downloads. The Core SDK is for developers; ordinary players generally need the Windows Installer.

- Restart the computer.
- Launch the affected program once.
If the error remains, return to application-specific repair rather than repeatedly reinstalling OpenAL. Portable or DRM-free games may require their private copy in the game directory even after a system-wide installation.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
- Open Windows Security or your antivirus product.
- Review Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent section.
- Restore a file only when it came from a trusted game installation or official OpenAL package and its location is correct.
- Update the game and antivirus before considering a narrowly scoped exclusion.
Do not disable protection globally or whitelist a DLL from a crack, unofficial mirror, or unknown mod pack. If a legitimate file is repeatedly quarantined, send the detection details to the game or antivirus vendor.

Fix 5: Resolve architecture and version mismatches
Windows architecture and application architecture are different. A 32-bit game on 64-bit Windows still needs a 32-bit-compatible OpenAL library. The same filename can represent different builds, and copying a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit game folder can produce a missing-DLL-looking error or 0xc000007b.
- Restore the original game directory through the launcher.
- Remove only a DLL you can identify as manually substituted or misplaced.
- Do not use
regsvr32; OpenAL32.dll is not normally an ActiveX/COM component that registration repairs. - Do not use simplistic System32/SysWOW64 copying instructions. Application-local installation or the official installer is safer.

Fix 6: Reinstall the required Visual C++ runtime
Some older games need Microsoft Visual C++ components in addition to OpenAL. Use Microsoft’s supported redistributable page: Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

- Install the version requested by the game or included with its prerequisites.
- For a 32-bit game, the x86 package may be required even on 64-bit Windows.
- An x64 package does not automatically replace every older x86 runtime.
- Visual C++ packages do not install OpenAL themselves.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components when the problem is broader
Use these commands when multiple applications fail, Windows reports corruption, an official installer will not run, or a disk/cleanup problem may have damaged protected files. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish successfully.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. DISM may use Windows Update. If necessary, Microsoft documents a repair-source form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a real repair source; do not paste the example path unless it exists. Microsoft explains command results and recovery steps at its System File Checker guidance.
- No integrity violations: protected Windows files were not found corrupted.
- Corrupt files repaired: restart and test the program.
- Some files could not be repaired: review the CBS log and consider Windows recovery or application reinstallation.
- SFC could not perform the requested operation: Microsoft suggests trying Safe Mode.
Because a game’s private OpenAL32.dll is generally not a protected Windows component, SFC can report no problem while the game still needs its own runtime repaired.

Consider it only when the original implementation is unavailable, the old game has a documented compatibility problem, or a developer, mod author, or trusted guide recommends it.
- Prefer a per-application change in the game folder, not a Windows-wide replacement.
- Back up the original DLL first and match the game’s architecture.
- Follow the project’s documented deployment instructions rather than renaming files by guesswork.
- Keep the original available for rollback; audio effects, EAX behavior, or extension support can change.

If the game launches but still has no sound
- Confirm Windows is using the intended output device.
- Check the game’s speaker, audio-device, and volume settings.
- Disable recent mods and restore original OpenAL files.
- Check audio configuration files, logs, exclusive-mode settings, and sample-rate compatibility.
- Investigate driver or legacy EAX/surround compatibility.
- Try OpenAL Soft only when the title’s documentation supports it.
What not to do
- Do not download an isolated OpenAL32.dll from a DLL mirror.
- Do not copy a random DLL into
System32or overwrite working files. - Do not install broad “DLL fixer,” registry-cleaner, or all-in-one runtime utilities.
- Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit DLLs.
- Do not assume the newest OpenAL Soft build is correct for every old game.
When to contact the developer
Escalate after launcher verification, the bundled prerequisite installer, and the official runtime have been tried. Provide the exact error, Windows version and architecture, game version and launcher, mod status, verification result, whether oalinst.exe ran, and relevant launcher or crash logs. A clean reinstall or a game-specific compatibility patch may be required for an obsolete title.

Is OpenAL32.dll a virus?
The filename itself is a legitimate OpenAL runtime name, but a file in an unexpected folder or from an unofficial download should be treated as untrusted. Check its provenance with your game installer or official OpenAL package and review antivirus detections.

Avoid standalone DLL mirrors. Install the game’s bundled runtime or the official OpenAL 1.1 Windows Installer so the version and architecture match.
Will reinstalling DirectX fix OpenAL32.dll?
Not usually. DirectX and OpenAL are separate dependency families; repair the game’s OpenAL installation first.
Does SFC repair OpenAL32.dll?
Usually not when the DLL belongs to a game folder. SFC repairs protected Windows files, so use it for broader corruption rather than as the first fix for one game.
