Do not erase your Mac first. Identify the exact failure message, back up whatever you can, then work through Safe Mode, macOS Recovery, Disk Utility, and a fresh Apple installer before considering firmware recovery or a clean erase. Also confirm that Big Sur is actually appropriate: Apple now recommends the latest macOS compatible with your Mac, while Big Sur (macOS 11) is mainly relevant for older hardware, legacy software, or a Mac whose newest supported release is Big Sur (Apple’s macOS download guidance).
Match the message to the likely fix
| Message or symptom | Best first path |
|---|---|
| An error occurred while downloading | Use reliable internet, remove network restrictions, check storage, and redownload. |
| An error occurred while preparing the software update | Safe Mode, then Recovery and Disk Utility First Aid. |
| An error occurred while installing macOS | Recovery reinstall, First Aid, and a known-good installer. |
| The installer is damaged or cannot be verified | Delete the installer and download it again from Apple. |
| Failed to personalize the software update | Retry Recovery on a normal network; persistent Apple-silicon/T2 failures may need a firmware Revive. |
| The volume cannot be used or the installer cannot see the disk | Disk Utility First Aid; missing or unrepairable storage usually requires service. |
| Repeated restarts during installation | Keep power connected and allow normal restarts; use Recovery only after a genuine freeze. |
| Prohibitory symbol | The installed system is incompatible or incomplete; start Recovery. |
| Question-mark folder | The Mac cannot find a usable startup system; start Recovery and check the disk. |
| Blank screen or an exclamation point in a circle | Possible startup or firmware failure, especially after an interrupted update. |
Apple notes that installation errors can be temporary and that the remedy depends on whether downloading, preparing, installing, or personalizing failed (Apple Support).
Before you retry
Confirm compatibility and the intended version
Check the exact Mac model and year against Apple’s Big Sur compatibility list. A Mac that supports Big Sur may also support Monterey, Ventura, or a later release. On an incompatible Mac, the App Store can disable Get or report that the requested version is unavailable (Apple’s download page). Installing an older system as a downgrade is not universally supported.
Protect your data
If macOS still starts, make a current Time Machine backup and copy irreplaceable files elsewhere. Verify the backup before erasing anything. If the Mac will not boot and the files are important, arrange file transfer or professional data recovery first.

Remove common installation obstacles
- Connect directly to power; do not close a laptop lid during installation.
- Use stable home Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Avoid captive portals, enterprise authentication, VPNs, filtering proxies, and unstable hotspots.
- Disconnect nonessential USB and Thunderbolt devices, hubs, printers, and external drives.
- Free substantially more space than the installer download requires. Remove large files, old installers, device backups, and unused apps; empty Trash, but do not delete system folders.
Recovery may still need internet access for firmware and Mac-specific information (Apple Support). Its broadband connection uses DHCP over Wi-Fi or Ethernet; captive-network login pages, 802.1X, and some PPPoE setups can block installation (Recovery requirements).
Let a normal installation finish before interrupting it
Several restarts, a slow progress bar, or a blank screen for a few minutes can be normal. Keep the Mac powered and wait. If there has been no progress for an unusually long time, record the exact screen or message, then use Recovery rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns (Apple’s installation guidance).
Retry in Safe Mode
Safe Mode prevents many third-party extensions, login items, fonts, and startup utilities from loading, checks the startup disk, and clears some caches. Retry Software Update or the Big Sur installer after entering it.

- Shut down.
- Hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Select the startup disk, hold Shift, and click Continue in Safe Mode.
- Log in; “Safe Boot” may appear in the login window.
Intel
- Restart or turn on the Mac.
- Immediately hold Shift until the login window, then sign in.
Safe Mode can limit graphics, audio, networking, and peripheral features. A firmware password can prevent Safe Mode on some Intel Macs. If it will not start, proceed to Recovery instead (Safe Mode instructions).

Reinstall macOS from Recovery without erasing
Apple silicon
- Shut down and hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Select Options (the gear), then Continue.
- Choose Reinstall macOS and follow the prompts.
Intel
- Command-R: built-in Recovery; reinstalls the current or most recently installed macOS.
- Option-Command-R: Internet Recovery; installs the latest macOS compatible with the Mac.
- Shift-Option-Command-R: installs the macOS that came with the Mac, or the closest available version.
When asked for a destination, choose Macintosh HD, not Macintosh HD – Data. Unlock the disk with the normal Mac login password if requested, keep power and network connected, and do not interrupt the process. Recovery reinstall is designed to preserve apps and personal data, but it is not a substitute for a backup (Apple’s Recovery procedure).
Recovery does not guarantee Big Sur specifically: the result depends on the Mac, local versus Internet Recovery, the previously installed system, whether the disk was erased, and the key combination used.

Repair the startup disk with First Aid
- Start macOS Recovery and open Disk Utility.
- Choose View > Show All Devices.
- Select the lowest-level volume, usually Macintosh HD – Data, and click First Aid then Run.
- Work upward through the volume, container, and physical device, running First Aid on each applicable item.
- Quit Disk Utility and retry Reinstall macOS.
First Aid repairs directory and formatting errors; Erase deletes the selected volume or disk. If the internal storage does not appear or cannot be repaired, software retries are unlikely to solve the problem—contact Apple or a qualified service provider (Disk Utility guidance).
Replace a damaged or unverifiable installer
- Quit the installer and delete Install macOS Big Sur.app from Applications.
- Empty Trash if necessary, then restart.
- Use Recovery First Aid if disk errors are suspected.
- Download Big Sur again through Apple’s official App Store/download route.
Do not use random DMG, torrent, or patched-installer sites. Apple specifically recommends deleting and redownloading when an installer is damaged or cannot be verified (Apple Support; official download methods).

softwareupdate --list-full-installers
Then download an exact listed version:
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.x.x
Replace 11.x.x with a version actually shown. The installer is placed in Applications. “Update not found” means that version is unavailable for this Mac; this command is not a universal downgrade tool (Apple’s documented method).
Use a bootable Big Sur installer
This is useful when Recovery repeatedly fails, internet access is unreliable, or several compatible Macs need installation. You need an erasable USB or external drive, the full installer in Applications, and a compatible Mac. Creating it erases the external drive.
sudo /Applications/Install macOS Big Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia
--volume /Volumes/MyVolume
Replace /Volumes/MyVolume with the actual volume name. On Intel, hold Option at startup and select the installer. On Apple silicon, hold the power button for startup options and choose the external installer if allowed. Some T2 Intel Macs require external booting to be enabled in Startup Security Utility; change only the necessary setting and restore the strongest suitable security afterward (Apple’s bootable-installer instructions).

Resolve “failed to personalize the software update”
This message can involve Apple-service connectivity, firmware updates, an interrupted installation, or the T2/Apple-silicon recovery environment—not merely free space. Retry from Recovery on a normal home network or Ethernet. If the error persists on Apple silicon or a T2 Mac, use Apple’s firmware recovery workflow with another Mac.
Revive before Restore
- Revive: repairs firmware without erasing the Mac; try this first.
- Restore: erases the Mac and returns it to a factory-like state, after which macOS must be installed again.
The process requires the affected Apple-silicon or T2 Mac, a second Mac running macOS 14 or later, internet access, and a USB-C-to-USB-C data-and-charging cable. Apple says not to use a Thunderbolt 3 cable (firmware recovery requirements).
Erase and reinstall only after safer methods fail
Erase is appropriate only after a verified backup when the startup structure is badly damaged, First Aid cannot repair it, a clean installation is required, or the Mac is being transferred. Big Sur does not provide the newer Erase All Content and Settings workflow in the same way as macOS Monterey 12 and later; use Recovery and Disk Utility instead (Apple’s erase guidance).
Erasing deletes data from the selected disk and may require the login password or Apple Account credentials. If the disk is absent in Disk Utility, erasing will not fix likely hardware failure.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
- Disk Utility cannot see the internal storage.
- First Aid repeatedly reports unrepairable errors.
- Installation fails at different points with a known-good installer and network.
- The Mac shuts down unexpectedly or Apple Diagnostics reports storage, memory, or logic-board faults.
- Firmware Revive or Restore cannot complete.
Use Apple Support or an authorized provider through getsupport.apple.com. Ask for a model-specific estimate; repair pricing varies and is not universal.
