RAV Antivirus is a real third-party security product from Reason Cybersecurity Ltd., commonly branded as ReasonLabs—but it is not part of Microsoft Windows. Whether to keep or buy it depends on how it was installed, what its current plan actually includes, the renewal terms, and how much weight you place on independent test results. In AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 home-user lineup, Microsoft Defender and several other products appear, but RAV does not; that is an evidence gap, not proof that RAV failed a test.
What is RAV Antivirus?
RAV is the antivirus product associated with ReasonLabs, whose legal provider is Reason Cybersecurity Ltd. The product is now presented as RAV Endpoint Protection. It is not Microsoft Defender or a Windows system component; Microsoft makes that distinction in a Microsoft Q&A response.
You may also encounter ReasonLabs products such as RAV VPN and browser-security components, including Safer Web or Online Security. These are distinct products, not proof that the antivirus plan includes every related feature. ReasonLabs lists separate product policies in its policy directory, and its Chrome Web Store publisher page identifies related browser products.
Is RAV legitimate, or is it malware?
RAV is a commercially distributed security product with official product information and terms. That establishes that RAV is a real product; it does not establish that every copy found on a computer is authentic, wanted, or installed with informed consent.

An unexpected installation can follow a bundled software installer, an optional offer, a VPN or browser-security installation, a download from an unofficial mirror, or another person using the computer. Those possibilities do not establish how a particular copy arrived. Check the publisher, installation date, and source before deciding.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and look for RAV, ReasonLabs, Reason Cybersecurity, RAV VPN, Safer Web, or Online Security.
- Compare the installation date with other programs added at the same time.
- Check browser extensions and the original download source if you know it.
- In Windows Security → Virus & threat protection, check which antivirus provider is active.
If another security tool flags RAV, the alert could reflect a potentially unwanted application classification, a false positive, or a modified or counterfeit copy. Verify the publisher, file signature, installation path, and download source; do not treat the alert alone as proof either way. A product can be legitimate yet unwanted because of how it was offered or installed. Do not trust a pop-up claiming Microsoft or Windows requires you to install RAV.
What do RAV Essential and Premium include?
ReasonLabs’ RAV terms describe Essential as free for an unlimited period and Premium as a paid subscription. The terms and product page describe scanning, real-time protection, and threat removal; Premium also lists anti-ransomware capabilities and additional premium solutions. Exact feature availability should be checked for the edition and plan shown at checkout.

ReasonLabs says its anti-ransomware approach uses honeypot files intended to attract attempted ransomware modifications and trigger detection. This is a behavioral defense method, not a guarantee that every ransomware strain will be stopped. Treat it as a vendor-described feature, not an independently established outcome.
What does independent testing show?
AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 home-user results list products including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender, ESET, F-Secure, Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Avast, AVG, Avira, Kaspersky, TotalAV, and K7. RAV is not in that lineup, so a current AV-TEST score for RAV cannot be verified from this test. Not being listed does not mean RAV failed or performed poorly; it means this result does not provide a direct score for it.
AV-TEST scores protection, performance, and usability out of six points each, for 18 possible points, and awards its TOP PRODUCT designation at 17.5 points or higher. Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer version 4.18 scored 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability in that June 2026 test. Those scores describe the tested version and period, not every later release.

Tests are snapshots: versions, operating systems, configurations, and laboratory methods matter. For example, AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance report evaluates system impact and identifies its tested versions and Windows configuration. Compare current results for the exact products you are considering rather than treating one score as a permanent ranking.
RAV versus Microsoft Defender
Microsoft says Defender is built into supported Windows versions, and it advises against running two full antivirus products at the same time. When another antimalware product becomes the active provider, Defender turns off or changes mode; check Windows Security rather than assuming both are adding protection.

If RAV’s only advantage for you is simply having antivirus, Defender may already meet that need. Paying for RAV is easier to justify when its specific features, support, or fit matter to you and the plan’s terms are acceptable—not just because the feature list is longer.

How to choose any antivirus
Compare evidence and fit, not just brand familiarity or feature counts. A paid suite is not automatically necessary for every Windows user, and no antivirus removes the need for safe account practices and backups.
Protection evidence
- Look for recent independent malware-protection and real-world protection testing for the product version you would install.
- Check whether tests cover ransomware behavior, phishing, malicious sites, exploits, or scripts, and whether protection depends on cloud access.
- Read the test date, operating system, configuration, and laboratory methodology alongside the score.
Performance and usability
- Look for measured impact during boot, file copying, application installation, gaming, and browsing, especially if your PC is older or low-powered.
- Check false-positive rates, alert clarity, scan scheduling, accessibility of advanced controls, and whether marketing notices can be disabled.
- Find out how to restore a wrongly quarantined file before you need to do it.
Features, privacy, and support
- Pay only for extras you will use: firewall controls, VPN, password manager, identity monitoring, parental controls, webcam protection, secure banking mode, or cloud backup.
- Read the privacy policy for the specific product. ReasonLabs maintains separate policies for endpoint protection, VPN, and other services; the RAV VPN privacy policy should not be treated as the endpoint product’s policy.
- Check what data is collected and transmitted, international processing, retention, sharing, vendor identity, support options, and cancellation terms.
Check the price and renewal terms before paying
The RAV terms say plan prices and details are provided on the website, promotional discounts may apply only to the initial subscription term, and subscriptions automatically renew for a period equal to the initial term. Because a fixed price is not established here, use the checkout page for your country and confirm the total before paying.
- What is the price today, and what will the renewal cost be?
- How many devices are covered, and for what billing term?
- Is the displayed amount an introductory offer? Are taxes or other charges added?
- How do cancellation and any refund policy work for your country and payment method?
- Are VPN, identity, browser, or other features included in this exact plan, or offered separately?
What to do if RAV appeared unexpectedly
Use the current Windows 11 settings path below; wording can differ by Windows release, language, and interface updates. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance explains where to review virus and threat protection, while its antivirus-provider guidance covers active providers.

- Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Search for RAV, RAV Endpoint Protection, ReasonLabs, Reason Cybersecurity, RAV VPN, Safer Web, and Online Security. Note each publisher and installation date.
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection and check the displayed antivirus provider. Do not install another full antivirus until you know which product is active.
- If you do not want RAV, close its windows, use the three-dot menu beside the relevant app in Installed apps, and select Uninstall. Remove related products separately if you do not want them; a VPN or browser extension may not be removed with the antivirus.
- Restart Windows. Reopen Windows Security and confirm that Defender or the replacement you deliberately chose is active; do not assume it switched back without checking.
- Review browser extensions for related components. If the copy came from an unofficial installer or appears altered, run a scan with a trusted security tool after removal.
If normal uninstall fails, search Windows for Control Panel, open Programs and Features, and try removing the program there. Restart and recheck the active provider. Avoid deleting program folders or registry entries as a first step. If an administrator protects the software, the PC belongs to work or school, or the product repeatedly returns, contact the device administrator or vendor rather than using improvised cleanup scripts.
Who should keep, buy, or remove RAV?
RAV may fit if
- You deliberately installed it from a source you trust and want a third-party antivirus.
- A specific RAV feature matters to you, and you have verified that it is part of the plan you are considering.
- You have reviewed the renewal terms and are comfortable with the available independent evidence for the exact product.
Look elsewhere or use Defender if
- You only need basic malware protection on a supported Windows computer and do not need a specific paid feature.
- You require strong current independent test evidence before paying; compare RAV with products listed in current laboratory results rather than inferring a ranking from coverage alone.
- You are weighing RAV mainly on an introductory price, want multiple active antivirus engines, or have not distinguished endpoint, VPN, and browser privacy terms.
Remove it if
- You do not want it, cannot verify the installation source, or find its plan and renewal terms unjustified.
- It is redundant with the security setup you have chosen. After removal and restart, verify the active provider in Windows Security.
Antivirus does not prevent every phishing attempt, account takeover, weak-password problem, unsafe backup, or social-engineering trick. Keep Windows updated, use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available, and maintain backups that malware cannot easily alter.
