First, choose the result you need: tap Save Audio to reuse a sound inside Instagram; use Download to save a Reel video when that option is available; or download/record the video and extract an M4A, AAC, WAV, or MP3 file. Instagram does not offer a universally available button that downloads any Reel’s audio as a standalone MP3.
Licensed music may be omitted from a downloaded Reel or muted later when rights change. A downloaded file is also not automatically licensed for reposting, advertising, or monetization.

1. Save the audio inside Instagram
Use this when: you want to use the sound in another Reel, not create a file in your phone’s Files or Music app.
- Open the Reel in Instagram’s mobile app.
- Tap the displayed audio name or sound label.
- Tap Save Audio.
- When creating a Reel, open the saved-audio area, select the sound, and choose the section Instagram permits.
Instagram supports original audio you create, original audio from another Reels creator, and audio from its music library. See Instagram’s audio help page.

This saves an in-app reference, not an MP3. The control can be missing when audio is licensed, removed, muted, region-restricted, unavailable to your account, or still subject to a feature rollout. Meta says its licensed music library is intended for personal, non-commercial use and that some business accounts and regions have restricted access; it directs commercial users to Sound Collection (Meta’s music licensing guidance).
2. Download a public Reel, then extract its audio
Use this when: the Reel is public, Instagram shows a download control, and you have permission to keep or use the content.
- Open the Reel.
- Tap Share.
- Choose Download, if shown.
- Open the saved video in a mobile or desktop editor.
- Select Extract audio, Detach audio, or Separate audio.
- Export the result as M4A, AAC, WAV, or MP3.
Creators can disable public-Reel downloads. Reporting on Instagram’s rollout also found that some downloads using licensed audio contain no audio, while original-audio downloads can retain sound: TechCrunch’s report. The saved video may include a watermark, attribution, or lower-quality compression.
Extract with a mobile or desktop editor
- Mobile: import the Reel, select the clip, choose Extract/Detach audio, then export.
- Desktop: import the MP4, place it on the timeline, unlink or detach the audio, remove the video track, and export the audio.
Extract with FFmpeg
These commands work only on a video already stored locally; they do not bypass Instagram access controls or private accounts.

Use this when: there is no Download button but the Reel can lawfully be played on your device. Treat it as a fallback, not a way to defeat privacy or rights protections.
- Open the Reel and position it at the required section.
- Start the built-in screen recorder.
- Enable device or media audio; avoid microphone-only capture for clean system sound.
- Play the Reel, stop recording, and trim the beginning and end.
- Detach or extract the recording’s audio and export it.
iPhone
Use Screen Recording in Control Center. Microphone capture is optional and can add room noise. Layout and labels vary by iOS version and settings; protected playback may produce a silent recording.
Android
Open the built-in recorder from Quick Settings and choose device/media audio rather than microphone-only capture. Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, and other Android versions use different menus.
Notifications, speaker bleed, distortion, blocked capture, and unwanted video frames are common failure modes. Do not record private content or redistribute copyrighted audio without authorization.

4. Get the original audio from the creator or source file
Use this when: quality, ownership, or permission matters.
Your own Reel
- Find the original camera video, voice memo, music file, or editing-project export.
- Export audio directly from the original project.
- If it is unavailable, download your own Reel where Instagram permits it and extract the track.
Someone else’s Reel
- Contact the creator.
- Request the original file and permission for your intended use.
- Ask which format and platforms the permission covers.
- Keep the permission record.
This avoids social-media compression, watermarks, omitted licensed music, and later rights changes. Instagram defines original audio as audio created while filming or uploading a video, or original audio created by another Reels creator (Instagram Help Center).
5. Use licensed replacement music or sound effects
Use this when: you are publishing a new Reel, advertisement, client project, or monetized video. A licensed replacement does not retrieve the exact sound from an existing Reel.
- Instagram music library: suitable only where your account, region, post type, and license allow it.
- Meta Sound Collection: Meta describes more than 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds and identifies the collection for commercial uses such as ads. Check current terms at Meta’s guidance.
- Epidemic Sound: its official pricing page lists Creator at $9.99/month billed annually ($119.88 yearly), Pro at $16.99/month billed annually ($203.88 yearly), and Business at $30/month billed annually ($360 yearly), with Enterprise custom-priced. These figures were shown in August 2026 and vary by billing cycle, geography, and promotion. Review current plans and Creator-plan terms; audiovisual and standalone-music rights differ.
- Artlist: Social and Pro plans have different channel, client, branded, and commercial permissions. Check plan guidance and the current Pro license.

Troubleshooting
No Save Audio button
- Tap the audio label itself, not only Share.
- Try the mobile app rather than a desktop browser.
- Check for licensed, removed, region-restricted, or account-restricted audio.
- Update Instagram and reopen the Reel, understanding that an update may not restore a rights-limited feature.
- Save the Reel for reference instead.
No Download button
The creator may have disabled downloads, or the Reel may be private, restricted, or viewed in a context without the control. Ask the creator for the file, use your own source file, or consider a permitted screen recording.

The downloaded video is silent
Licensed audio may have been omitted; the track may have been muted or removed after publication; or it may be unavailable in your region. Instagram documents rights-related muting, and public-download reporting documents silent licensed-audio downloads (Instagram; TechCrunch).
The extracted file is silent
- Play the MP4 and verify that it has sound.
- Confirm the editor imported and unmuted the audio track.
- For a local file, run
ffprobe reel.mp4and check for an audio stream. - Ensure screen recording used device/media audio.
If no audio stream exists, extraction cannot recover it. Obtain the original or make a new permitted recording.
The sound is poor quality
- Obtain the original file.
- Use a creator-provided export.
- Download the highest-quality version Instagram offers.
- Avoid repeated MP3/video conversions.
Copyright, privacy, and commercial use
Instagram distinguishes original audio from licensed audio, which can include copyrighted music, film and television audio, and sound effects. Rights changes can leave a Reel visible while muting its sound (Instagram Help Center).
Downloading is not permission to redistribute. Credit alone is not necessarily a license, and “royalty-free” still means you must follow the provider’s terms. Screen-recording legality depends on jurisdiction, content, purpose, privacy, and applicable platform rules. For commercial or client work, obtain permission or use music with an explicit commercial license. Avoid random downloader sites: their safety, privacy, advertising, reliability, and terms should not be assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download Instagram audio without downloading the video?
You can save a sound inside Instagram with Save Audio, but Instagram does not universally export that sound as a standalone MP3. A local file normally requires downloading or recording the video first, then extracting its audio.
Can I save Instagram audio as MP3?
Yes, when the local video or recording actually contains an audio stream: extract it in an editor or encode it with FFmpeg. Licensed music omitted from the source cannot be recovered by an extractor.
Can I download audio from a private account?
Not through Instagram’s public-Reel download flow. Ask the owner for the original file and permission instead; do not use tools that claim to bypass privacy controls.
Can I use downloaded Instagram music on YouTube or TikTok?
Not automatically. A download does not grant redistribution or synchronization rights. Obtain a license that covers the destination platform and your intended use.

Save Audio stores an in-app reference for reuse in Instagram. Download Reel saves a video file when the creator and Instagram allow it; that file may omit licensed music and must be extracted to become an audio file.
The Bottom Line
Choose Save Audio for reuse inside Instagram, download and extract a public Reel when permitted, screen-record only as an appropriate fallback, and request the original file whenever quality or rights matter. For commercial publishing, use music with a license that explicitly covers your project.
