Yes. Recent iPhone calls can appear on another iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch when the devices use the same Apple Account and iCloud Phone & FaceTime syncing is enabled. That is separate from the setting that makes an iPhone’s cellular calls ring on a Mac or iPad.
Many people noticed merged Recents lists after upgrading to iOS 17, but Apple’s documentation describes an account-based iCloud synchronization capability rather than an iOS 17-only bug. The durable privacy fix for two different people is to use separate Apple Accounts and Family Sharing.
Which Apple feature is sharing the information?
Apple says Phone and FaceTime information can be stored in iCloud and made available on devices signed in to the same Apple Account when the relevant service is enabled. Depending on the device, carrier and services, the data can include:
- Recent cellular call history
- FaceTime call history
- Carrier voicemail and visual voicemail
- FaceTime video messages

This is not caused simply by nearby devices, Bluetooth pairing, contact syncing, Handoff, text-message forwarding or carrier call forwarding.
The two settings people commonly confuse

Turning off Calls on Other Devices can stop another device from ringing, but it is not the documented control for a merged recent-call database.
Why did this become noticeable after iOS 17?
Some users reported that previously separate-looking Recents lists appeared merged after installing iOS 17. Apple Community reports document these experiences beginning in September 2023, shortly after the release, but community posts do not establish that Apple classified every case as a bug.

A safer description is that many people noticed existing or expanded iCloud Phone & FaceTime synchronization in the iOS 17 era. Apple’s own iOS 17 feature material and iCloud documentation describe the capability, not an iOS 17-only rule. Read Apple’s iOS 17 feature overview alongside the iCloud documentation.
Confirm whether iCloud Phone & FaceTime is responsible
- On an affected iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap [your name].
- Tap iCloud.
- On iOS 17, tap Show All under the apps using iCloud.
- Look for Phone & FaceTime. If FaceTime is unavailable, the item may be labeled Phone.
- Check the same setting on every affected Apple device.
Apple documents this iOS 16–17 path in Set up iCloud for Phone & FaceTime. Also confirm that each device is signed in to the account you expect. A second person using that account is a privacy issue, not merely an extra device.
Stop recent-call and voicemail synchronization
- On each device that should no longer participate, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Tap Show All.
- Tap Phone & FaceTime or Phone.
- Turn off the iCloud synchronization option.
- If prompted, choose the option to stop using iCloud for this data.
- Repeat the change on every device that should have a separate local history.
- Allow time for the change to propagate. Restart affected devices if an old list remains visible.
Apple states that, with iCloud Phone & FaceTime disabled, the data remains only on the device and is not stored in iCloud. Phone and FaceTime data is not part of iCloud Backup, so disabling the service can reduce what is available through iCloud after a loss or replacement. Carrier voicemail is partly controlled by the carrier and may require separate action.

Disabling synchronization does not guarantee that every already-downloaded entry disappears immediately. A device may still show a locally cached record; remove sensitive entries manually after the setting is off.
Stop an iPhone from ringing on other Apple devices
If the problem is an incoming call ringing on a Mac or iPad rather than a merged Recents list, change the separate continuity setting on the iPhone:

- On iOS 17, open Settings > Phone. On newer Settings layouts, use Settings > Apps > Phone.
- Tap Calls on Other Devices.
- Turn off Allow Calls on Other Devices, or disable individual devices.
This setting governs where cellular calls can be received or answered. Check iCloud Phone & FaceTime separately if call history is still appearing elsewhere.

If two people share one Apple Account
Separate the accounts rather than repeatedly switching individual categories. Create or use one Apple Account per person, sign the second person’s devices into that account, then use Family Sharing for eligible purchases, subscriptions and shared storage.
One person can still use the same Apple Account on an iPhone, iPad, Mac and Watch. The important boundary is between people, not between devices. Sharing an account can expose more than calls, including contacts, calendars, photos, messages, notes, Find My information and other synchronized data depending on the enabled services.

- Open the Phone app and tap Recents.
- Swipe left on an individual call and tap Delete.
- For multiple entries, tap Edit, select the calls and delete them.
- Use the available clear option if your iOS 17 interface offers deletion of the entire list.
Deleting entries is different from stopping synchronization. Turn off Phone & FaceTime first when the goal is to prevent future cloud sharing, then check every device. Do not assume that deleting one entry proves all copies have been removed.

Troubleshoot a call history that still appears
- Repeat the check everywhere: disable Phone & FaceTime on every participating device, not just one.
- Verify account identity: compare the Apple Account shown under each device’s Settings name banner.
- Restart the devices: this can clear stale display state after the cloud setting changes.
- Check both controls: review Phone & FaceTime for Recents and Calls on Other Devices for ringing.
- Check voicemail separately: carrier voicemail may remain available through the carrier even after an iCloud toggle.
- Remove cached entries: manually delete old calls that remain visible after synchronization is disabled.
- Sign out only as a later step: first make sure important local data is available and that you know the account password before considering a sign-out and sign-in.
Older advice sometimes points to iCloud Drive. Apple’s current documentation identifies Phone & FaceTime (or Phone) as the relevant control, so use that explicit setting rather than treating iCloud Drive as the definitive fix.
What changes when synchronization is off?
- New call records should remain local instead of being uploaded and synchronized through iCloud.
- Records already downloaded to a device may remain until you delete them.
- Phone and FaceTime information may no longer be available through this iCloud service after device loss or replacement.
- Carrier voicemail can behave independently and may require carrier-side management.
- FaceTime history and video-message availability can change with the same service setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does iOS 17 automatically share calls between every iPhone?
No. The documented cause is devices using the same Apple Account with iCloud Phone & FaceTime (or Phone) enabled. The iOS 17 connection reflects when many users noticed the behavior, not proof that every iOS 17 installation enables it.
Can two iPhones have separate call logs while using one Apple Account?
You can disable Phone & FaceTime synchronization, but separate Apple Accounts are the robust choice when the phones belong to different people.
Does Family Sharing expose call history?
Family Sharing is intended to share eligible purchases, subscriptions and storage without sharing each member’s personal call history. Each person should use their own Apple Account.

The entries may be local copies or cached display data. Restart the device, verify the setting on every account device and delete sensitive entries manually.
