If Windows 11 looks unusually wide or tall, first select the affected monitor in Settings > System > Display, then set both Display resolution and Scale to Recommended. If circles are still oval, check GPU or monitor scaling, the refresh-rate mode, graphics driver, and the cable or dock.

Identify what is actually stretched

  • Everything on the desktop: Check Windows resolution and scale, GPU scaling, monitor or TV picture mode, drivers, and the signal cable.
  • Only one game: Check the game’s resolution, aspect ratio, fullscreen mode, and GPU-control-panel overrides.
  • Only a video or remote session: Use that application’s fit-to-window or scaling option.
  • Only an external monitor: Select that monitor in Windows before changing any setting.
  • Before Windows starts: If the manufacturer logo or firmware screen is distorted, Windows scaling is not the sole cause; investigate the monitor, cable, adapter, dock, or firmware.

“Everything is too large” usually indicates Windows scaling. “Everything has the wrong shape” points more often to a mismatched resolution or aspect-ratio scaling. Black bars after preserving the correct aspect ratio are preferable to a distorted picture.

Restore the recommended resolution and scale

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Open System > Display.
  3. Click the monitor that looks wrong.
  4. Under Scale & layout, set Scale to Recommended. Remove a custom scaling value if one is present.
  5. Set Display resolution to the option marked Recommended, then confirm the change.

Resolution selects the active pixel grid; scale changes the apparent size of text, icons, and applications. Windows scale normally does not change the geometric proportions of the whole image. A monitor’s native resolution is the pixel grid it is designed to display most sharply, such as 1920×1080, 2560×1440, or 3840×2160. Verify it in the monitor or laptop specifications if the Recommended option seems wrong. Microsoft explains that a lower-than-native mode can look blurry, bordered, centered, or stretched: Microsoft’s resolution and layout guide.

The screen may blink while changing modes. If the new mode is unusable, Windows normally returns to the previous setting after the confirmation period.

Check refresh rate as a secondary step

  1. Return to Settings > System > Display and select the affected display.
  2. Open Advanced display.
  3. Under Choose a refresh rate, select a rate supported at your desired resolution.
  4. If the distortion began after a refresh-rate change, restore the previous working option.

Refresh rate is not usually the cause of a geometrically stretched image. However, some choices do not support the current resolution and can make Windows select another display mode. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate guidance.

Stop GPU scaling from changing the aspect ratio

When a non-native image is enlarged, the graphics driver or the monitor can perform the scaling. Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio keeps proportions and may add black bars. Full-screen or Full panel fills the panel but can stretch a differently shaped source. No scaling or Center keeps the original size and may leave borders.

NVIDIA graphics

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Go to Display > Adjust desktop size and position.
  3. Choose Aspect ratio. Use No scaling for a centered, crisp image with borders.
  4. Avoid Full-screen when the source and monitor have different aspect ratios.
  5. If a game repeatedly overrides the setting, consider Override the scaling mode set by games and programs; this can change game behavior.

NVIDIA defines these modes in its scaling documentation and desktop-size controls.

AMD Radeon

  1. Open AMD Software and select Display.
  2. Review GPU Scaling and Scaling Mode.
  3. Choose Preserve aspect ratio, or Center if borders are acceptable.
  4. Avoid Full panel unless the source already has the monitor’s aspect ratio.

AMD describes these options at its display-scaling FAQ.

Intel graphics

  1. Open Display settings or Intel Graphics Command Center.
  2. In the Command Center, choose Display.
  3. Under Resolution, select the monitor’s supported mode.

Intel’s controls vary by GPU generation, driver, display, and application. Its documented resolution path is available at Intel Support.

Update or roll back the graphics driver

Try Device Manager first

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA adapter and choose Update driver.
  4. Run the automatic search and restart if requested.

Also open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Device Manager can say the best driver is installed even when a newer package exists from the GPU or laptop manufacturer. On laptops, prefer the OEM package when available because it may include panel, power, hotkey, or hybrid-graphics customizations.

Roll back an update that triggered the problem

  1. In Device Manager > Display adapters, open the adapter’s Properties.
  2. Select the Driver tab.
  3. Choose Roll Back Driver when available, then restart.

If rollback is unavailable, obtain the previous package from the PC or GPU manufacturer. Do not use random driver-download sites.

If the native resolution is missing

  1. Restart the PC and reconnect the display.
  2. Try another HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or dock connection.
  3. Confirm that the correct monitor is selected in Display settings.
  4. Check Device Manager > Display adapters. Microsoft Basic Display Adapter means Windows is using a generic driver.
  5. Install the correct Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or laptop-manufacturer driver and restart.

Uninstalling a driver does not guarantee that Windows will reinstall the complete vendor package; the system may temporarily use a basic driver. Intel also says its standard Graphics Command Center generally does not provide custom-resolution creation and does not support third-party utilities for that purpose: Intel’s current guidance.

Check the monitor, TV, cable, dock, and adapter

  • Open the display’s on-screen menu and look for Aspect Ratio, Picture Size, Scaling, Wide, Full, Auto, Original, or 1:1. Choose the option that preserves the source shape.
  • On a TV, disable overscan or select a screen-fit, original, or 1:1 mode. Overscan usually crops edges rather than stretching the image.
  • Try another cable and another port.
  • Bypass a dock, hub, KVM, or adapter temporarily.
  • Test the computer with another display, then test the suspect display with another computer.

If only one display is affected, its monitor, cable, adapter, or input mode becomes more likely; if every display is affected, Windows or the GPU driver becomes more likely. These are troubleshooting inferences, not proof of a failed component.

Fix a stretched game or application

  1. Set the game’s resolution to the monitor’s native or Recommended mode.
  2. Select the matching aspect ratio rather than a forced 4:3, 5:4, or other incompatible ratio.
  3. Test borderless-window mode; it can avoid a game’s problematic exclusive fullscreen mode.
  4. Check NVIDIA or AMD scaling overrides and use Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio.
  5. Relaunch the game or application after changing the display mode.

An individual game can remain stretched even when the Windows desktop is correct because it stores its own resolution and fullscreen settings.

If distortion appears before Windows loads

Distortion in the manufacturer logo, firmware screen, or boot animation points away from ordinary Windows scale settings. Reset the monitor’s picture settings, try another cable or port, bypass the dock or adapter, and test another display. Persistent distortion across computers or during firmware screens warrants support for the monitor, GPU, dock, or laptop. A community Microsoft Q&A thread illustrates that boot-screen stretching can persist despite Windows setting and driver changes, but it is not an authoritative diagnosis: Microsoft Q&A example.

Symptom-based troubleshooting

Symptom Likely area Next action Expected trade-off
Everything is large but shapes are correct Windows Scale Select Recommended scale and remove custom scaling Changes interface size, not necessarily resolution
Circles look oval Resolution or GPU/monitor scaling Use Recommended resolution and Aspect ratio scaling Black bars may appear
Desktop is blurry after adding a monitor Non-native mode, cable, dock, or driver Select that monitor and restore Recommended resolution A lower mode is less sharp
Only a game is stretched Game or GPU settings Use native resolution and matching aspect ratio Fullscreen filling may be unavailable without distortion
Resolution choices disappeared Driver, cable, adapter, or detection Inspect Display adapters and bypass accessories Reinstallation may temporarily use a basic driver
Problem followed a driver update Driver regression Roll back the driver An older package may lack later fixes
TV edges are cut off Overscan or TV picture mode Disable overscan or use screen-fit/1:1 Menu names vary by TV
Distortion occurs before Windows Monitor, cable, adapter, firmware, or hardware Test another display and direct connection Windows settings may have no effect

When to contact support

  • The issue appears on multiple displays or in firmware.
  • The correct native resolution remains unavailable after installing the proper driver.
  • The monitor has visible faults or repeatedly loses signal.
