The error means Photoshop cannot parse the file as a valid JPEG. The file may have the wrong extension, a duplicate extension, an incomplete transfer, unusual encoding, or genuine corruption. Make a copy first, inspect the complete filename, test the copy in another application, and export a new JPEG if it opens there. If no application can open it, move on to backups, a fresh download or copy, storage checks, and specialist recovery.
Why Photoshop shows an “invalid JPEG marker” error
JPEG images are structured as a sequence of data segments called markers. Photoshop expects those markers in a valid order and format. The message appears when the bytes it reads do not match the JPEG structure it expects.
That does not prove the image is permanently damaged. Common explanations include a JPEG given a different extension, a filename with two extensions, a file that was only partly downloaded or copied, and corruption caused by a failing drive, cable, network connection, crash, or interrupted save. Adobe lists filename correction, re-saving through another image application, and storage or hardware investigation as separate troubleshooting paths (Adobe’s invalid JPEG marker guidance).
Protect the original before testing
- Stop saving over the problem file.
- Create a duplicate and keep the original unchanged.
- Put the working copy on the computer’s internal drive, not a removable, network, or incompletely synchronized cloud location.
- Give every conversion or repair attempt a new filename.
These precautions preserve the best chance of recovery if a later attempt fails. Adobe also recommends using new recovered copies and local storage where possible (Adobe file-recovery guidance).

Fix 1: Show the complete filename and correct an extension
Windows
In File Explorer, select View > Show > File name extensions. Menu wording can vary by Windows release; the goal is to display the suffix rather than hide it.
macOS
In Finder, select the file and choose File > Get Info to inspect its name and extension. Finder’s displayed type can be based on the filename, so do not treat it as proof of the internal format.
Look for misleading names
photo.jpg.jpg— a duplicated suffix.photo.pdf.jpg— possibly a PDF with an extra.jpgappended.photo.psd— potentially JPEG data carrying a PSD label.photo.jpeg— an extension that may not match the file’s contents.
Rename only when you have established the actual format. Changing image.png to image.jpg does not convert PNG data into JPEG data. Adobe documents both duplicate extensions and a JPEG saved with a .psd extension as causes of format errors (Adobe’s invalid JPEG marker article; Adobe’s file-type guidance).

Fix 2: Identify the file’s real format
macOS: use Terminal’s file command
- Open Terminal.
- Type
file, including the trailing space. - Drag the duplicate into the Terminal window.
- Press Return and read the detected format.
file "/path/to/your/file"This checks the file header instead of trusting its name. Adobe documents this method because Finder can identify a file from its extension (Adobe’s file-identification instructions).
Windows and other practical checks
- Try the duplicate in another image viewer or editor.
- Check where it came from: a ZIP archive, download, messaging service, scanner, camera, or export workflow.
- Compare its size with the source or another known-good copy.
- Use a trusted file-identification utility if the format remains unclear.
The file may actually be PNG, WebP, TIFF, HEIC/HEIF, PDF, PSD, PSB, a proprietary camera file, or an unfinished download rather than JPEG.
Fix 3: Export a new JPEG from an application that can open it
If Preview, Photos, another editor, or a browser-capable application opens the duplicate, create a separate JPEG:

- Open the duplicate in the working application.
- Choose Export, Save As, or the equivalent command.
- Select JPEG or JPG.
- Save to a new local filename.
- Open that new file in Photoshop and in at least one other application.
Adobe specifically recommends opening the image elsewhere and saving it again as JPEG (Adobe’s documented fix). This creates a readable replacement; it does not repair the original bytes.
Re-encoding can reduce quality and remove metadata, embedded color profiles, comments, transparency, or other format-specific information. Check the recovered file’s pixel dimensions, orientation, color profile, important metadata, and visual quality. A browser preview is only a diagnostic: it may use a cached or embedded preview and does not prove that Photoshop can parse the complete file.
Fix 4: Get a complete copy again
- Redownload the original from its source.
- Copy it again from the camera card, phone, external drive, or other source.
- Re-extract the archive and confirm extraction completed without errors.
- Wait for cloud synchronization to finish, then copy the file to a local drive.
- Compare file sizes when an original reference exists.
If the replacement opens, retain the failed copy for comparison but use the new file for editing.

Fix 5: Investigate storage, cable, port, or network problems
One broken file may be an isolated rename or damaged transfer. Many damaged files from the same drive, cable, network share, or synchronized folder point to a shared storage or transfer problem.
- Stop repeated writes to a suspect drive.
- Try a different cable and port, then copy to a healthy local drive.
- Test another computer or network path.
- Check the drive for errors using the operating system’s built-in tools.
- Restore from a backup before attempting risky repair operations.
Adobe lists sudden power loss, crashes during saving, network problems, failing drives, damaged cables, faulty RAM, and software that interferes with file writing among possible causes of file damage (Adobe file-recovery guidance).

- On macOS, hold Shift + Option while opening the file.
- On Windows, hold Shift + Alt while opening the file.
This can recover the saved flattened composite while losing layers, masks, adjustment layers, or smart objects. It works only when compatible composite data was saved; it cannot recreate a composite if Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility was disabled when the document was saved (Adobe’s PSD/PSB recovery instructions). This is not a general JPEG solution.
When JPEG repair software is appropriate
Repair utilities may recover an image when the file structure is damaged but enough data remains. They cannot reliably reconstruct bytes that are missing. Work only from a copy, and prefer a local tool or a reputable professional recovery service for irreplaceable files.
Uploading a personal, client, medical, legal, or commercially sensitive image to an online repair service can expose its contents. Adobe’s recovery page lists customer-suggested PSD utilities but says Adobe does not support or test them; that list is not an endorsement (Adobe’s disclaimer).
If multiple files are failing or the source drive is unstable, stop using it and consider professional data recovery rather than installing software that writes to the same device.

- Keep versioned backups of original photos and working documents.
- Save to reliable local or properly synchronized storage before editing.
- Keep Photoshop’s file-recovery feature enabled; Adobe’s guidance describes a 10-minute default and a 5-minute option, although labels and behavior can vary by release.
- Preserve originals before converting or exporting.
- Verify important transfers by opening the copied file before deleting the source.

└─ Still failing → Restore backup/redownload → Check storage → Consider recoveryUse the least destructive step that answers the question. Renaming corrects a label; exporting converts data; repair attempts reconstruct damaged data. Keeping those three actions separate prevents a simple filename problem from becoming permanent data loss.
