Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Text Message Forwarding is missing from your iPhone, first check whether Messages in iCloud is already syncing messages. If it is not, the usual next step is to make sure iMessage is on and signed in to the right Apple Account, then refresh iMessage authentication. The current iPhone path is Settings > Apps > Messages > Text Message Forwarding.
Check the current setting and identify the problem
On current iOS, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Text Message Forwarding. Older iOS versions may show Messages directly under Settings. Apple’s current iPhone guide documents the Apps path: iPhone User Guide.
Work out which symptom you have before changing settings:
- The Text Message Forwarding row is absent: Messages in iCloud may already provide the cross-device behavior, or iMessage authentication may need attention.
- The row is present, but a device is missing: Check iMessage and the Apple Account used for Messages on that device.
- A device is listed, but its switch will not stay on: This points to an account or authentication issue; check the account and follow the reactivation steps below.
- The switch is on, but messages do not arrive: Check whether the iPhone receives the message itself, whether the message is blue or green, and whether the iPhone is online.
Understand which Apple feature you need
Text Message Forwarding relays carrier messages received by the iPhone to selected Apple devices. Apple’s instructions cover SMS, MMS, and RCS where supported. The iPhone must be turned on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service; it remains the originating phone for carrier messages. Replies from another device are routed through the iPhone and carrier. See Apple’s Text Message Forwarding instructions and its Text Message Forwarding security documentation.

| Feature | What it does | Does it depend on the iPhone? |
|---|---|---|
| Text Message Forwarding | Makes SMS, MMS, and supported RCS messages received by the iPhone available on selected Apple devices. | Yes. The iPhone must be on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service. |
| Messages in iCloud | Syncs message history across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, including carrier messages and iMessages. | The iPhone remains the source for carrier messages, while synchronization keeps message history consistent. |
| iMessage | Apple’s internet-based messaging service, commonly shown in blue bubbles. | It does not rely on the iPhone relaying carrier SMS. |
| Manual forwarding | Sends a particular message to another recipient after you select it. | No automatic device relay is involved. |
Carrier call forwarding or carrier-level SMS forwarding is also separate from Apple’s Text Message Forwarding setting. Apple explains the differences between iMessage, RCS, SMS, and MMS in its message-type overview.
First check Messages in iCloud
Apple says Text Message Forwarding is built into Messages in iCloud, so a separate forwarding switch may not be necessary when message syncing is configured. A missing switch is not, by itself, proof that the iPhone is broken. Check the setting on the devices where you want your conversations to stay synchronized, and allow time for the initial sync to finish.
On iPhone
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then See All or Show All if needed.
- Tap Messages in iCloud.
- Turn on Use on this iPhone.
On Mac
- Open Messages.
- Choose Messages > Settings (older macOS versions may say Preferences).
- Select iMessage and enable Messages in iCloud.
Make sure the devices use the same Apple Account for Messages and give synchronization time to complete. Apple’s iCloud User Guide describes Messages in iCloud setup and syncing.

If you are not using Messages in iCloud, enable forwarding
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Tap Text Message Forwarding.
- Turn on the iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro that should receive messages.
- If a six-digit verification code appears on the other device, enter it on the iPhone.
The receiving device must use the same Apple Account for Messages/iMessage. If your iPhone has Dual SIM, Apple’s iPhone guide says to enable forwarding for each applicable line.
If the Text Message Forwarding setting is completely missing
1. Confirm iMessage is on and signed in
On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn on iMessage. Tap Send & Receive and check that the correct Apple Account is signed in. Apple’s current iPhone guide documents the menu location.
2. Refresh iMessage authentication
- Turn iMessage off in Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Turn iMessage back on.
- Open Send & Receive and sign in again if prompted.
- Return to Text Message Forwarding and check whether the option is available.
Apple specifically recommends refreshing iMessage and signing in again when Text Message Forwarding is not visible: Text Message Forwarding on iPhone.

3. Verify the receiving device’s Messages account
Check the receiving device’s Messages sign-in, not just its general iCloud settings:
- iPad: Open Settings > Apps > Messages, turn on iMessage, and check the account under Send & Receive.
- Mac: Open Messages > Settings > iMessage and compare the account with the iPhone. Older macOS versions may call Settings Preferences.
- Apple Vision Pro: Confirm it is signed in to Messages with the same Apple Account as the iPhone.
If Messages is signed in to the wrong account, sign out and sign in with the account used on the iPhone, then check the iPhone’s forwarding screen again. A device may take time to complete iMessage activation.
4. Confirm the iPhone can send and receive carrier texts
Forwarding cannot work reliably if the iPhone itself cannot send or receive SMS/MMS. Check cellular coverage, the active SIM or line, and whether your carrier account supports texting. If the iPhone cannot send or receive messages, follow Apple’s message troubleshooting guidance or contact the carrier.

If the device is missing or forwarding only partly works
iPad or Mac does not appear
Start by turning on iMessage on the missing device and checking Send & Receive on iPad or Messages > Settings > iMessage on Mac. Correct an Apple Account mismatch, then revisit Text Message Forwarding on the iPhone. If Messages in iCloud is your chosen setup, configure it on the relevant devices and let syncing complete instead of looking for a separate switch.
Blue messages arrive, but green ones do not
Blue bubbles are iMessages. They can appear on other devices when those devices are signed in correctly and configured for Messages. Green bubbles are carrier messages: SMS and MMS depend on the iPhone’s cellular connection and carrier service, and need Text Message Forwarding or Messages in iCloud for cross-device availability. Test a green message specifically rather than treating successful iMessage delivery as proof that carrier-message forwarding works.
RCS is missing or inconsistent
Apple includes RCS in its current forwarding and iCloud message documentation, but support is not universal. RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 or later and a carrier that supports RCS; activation may take several hours. Availability depends on carrier, country or region, and messaging plan. Check your carrier’s support rather than assuming that every RCS conversation will behave the same way as SMS or iMessage. See Apple’s overview of RCS, SMS, MMS, and iMessage.

Dual SIM, delays, or an offline iPhone
- Dual SIM: If you recently added, removed, or changed a line, check forwarding for each applicable line.
- Late messages: Keep the iPhone connected, allow time for iCloud synchronization, and test Wi-Fi, cellular service, and carrier delivery.
- iPhone powered off or disconnected: Text Message Forwarding requires the iPhone to be on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular service. It is not a way to relay carrier messages when the iPhone is off.
Check account security before enabling another device
Forwarding is tied to devices enrolled with the same Apple Account, and Apple may require a six-digit verification code when two-factor authentication is not enabled. Do not enter a code on a device you do not trust. SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted; forwarding them to another device does not change the security of the original carrier message. Apple’s message-type overview distinguishes those messages from iMessage.
- Review the devices associated with your Apple Account and remove ones you do not recognize or no longer own.
- Turn off forwarding for devices you no longer use.
- If you suspect someone else has access to your account, review device access and change your Apple Account password.
Last checks before contacting support
- Restart the iPhone and the affected receiving device.
- Install available iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates; an update is not a guaranteed fix, but Apple advises keeping devices current when message synchronization fails.
- Recheck Messages in iCloud, iMessage status, and the Messages Apple Account on each device.
- If the iPhone itself cannot send or receive carrier texts, contact your carrier about the active line and messaging service.
- If the iPhone can text, accounts match, and Text Message Forwarding remains unavailable, contact Apple Support.
There is no need to start with a factory reset or a third-party forwarding app. Check iCloud, iMessage registration, device accounts, and carrier service first.
