How to Install Yandex Browser on Ubuntu (64-bit DEB and APT Methods)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yandex Browser provides an official Linux DEB package for 64-bit Ubuntu 18.04 and newer, according to Yandex’s published requirements. For most users, download the DEB from the official Yandex Browser page, then install it with Ubuntu’s dependency-aware command:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./yandex-browser-stable_*.deb

The package and updates come from Yandex, not Ubuntu’s official archive. Check your architecture before installing, and use the repository method below if you want routine APT upgrades.

Check Ubuntu compatibility first

Yandex lists 64-bit Ubuntu 18.04 or newer as the minimum supported Ubuntu baseline. Its published Linux requirements include at least 512 MB RAM, 600 MB of free disk space, an Intel Pentium 4-or-later processor, glibc 2.18 or newer, NSS 3.35 or newer, nss-util 3.59 or newer, and ALSA 1.1.6 or newer. The RAM and processor figures are bare minimums; comfortable browser use generally needs much more memory.

The official repository exposes an amd64 build. That normally corresponds to an x86_64 computer. Do not assume the package works on ARM64, 32-bit Ubuntu, or every Ubuntu-derived distribution simply because it uses DEB files.

getconf LONG_BIT
dpkg --print-architecture
uname -m
lsb_release -a
df -h /
  • getconf LONG_BIT should normally return 64.
  • dpkg --print-architecture should normally return amd64.
  • uname -m usually reports x86_64 on the matching hardware.
  • Keep at least the 600 MB listed by Yandex free on the root filesystem.

These requirements come from Yandex’s installation documentation; support can change, so check that page if you are using an older or derivative release.

Method 1: install the official DEB package

Download from Yandex

  1. Open the official Yandex Browser download page.
  2. Choose the Linux DEB download for Intel/AMD-compatible systems.
  3. Save the file in ~/Downloads. The versioned filename will change over time.

Install with APT in Terminal

Ubuntu recommends installing a local DEB through APT because APT can resolve dependencies. Open Terminal and run:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./yandex-browser-stable_*.deb

Enter your Ubuntu password, review the proposed package changes, and type Y when prompted. The ./ prefix tells APT that the package is a local file. If you know the exact filename, substitute it for the wildcard; do not assume a filename seen in an old guide is still current.

For example, the repository index showed yandex-browser-stable_26.6.1.1003-1_amd64.deb on July 28, 2026, but package versions change.

Install through the graphical desktop

  1. Open Files and open Downloads.
  2. Double-click the downloaded .deb.
  3. Choose App Center, Software Install, or your desktop’s package manager if Ubuntu opens the file in Archive Manager.
  4. Click Install and authenticate with your account password.

Button names vary between Ubuntu releases, GNOME variants, and localized desktops. The graphical workflow is documented by Yandex at Yandex Browser installation help.

Launch it

Open the application menu, search for Yandex Browser, and select it. You can also try:

yandex-browser

Method 2: configure Yandex’s APT repository

The standalone DEB is simplest for a one-time installation. An APT repository is more convenient if you want Yandex Browser included in normal package upgrades, but it adds a third-party source with system-wide privileges. Ubuntu does not vet that repository as part of its own archive; enable it only if you trust Yandex and the exact source you are adding.

Yandex publishes the repository at https://repo.yandex.ru/yandex-browser/deb. The commands below adapt Yandex’s repository information to Ubuntu’s modern per-repository keyring model. Ubuntu deprecated apt-key beginning with Ubuntu 22.04, so do not make an apt-key add command your preferred setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo install -d -m 0755 /usr/share/keyrings

curl -fsSL
  https://repo.yandex.ru/yandex-browser/YANDEX-BROWSER-KEY.GPG
  | sudo gpg --dearmor
  -o /usr/share/keyrings/yandex-browser.gpg

echo "deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/yandex-browser.gpg] https://repo.yandex.ru/yandex-browser/deb stable main"
  | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yandex-browser.list > /dev/null

sudo apt update
sudo apt install yandex-browser-stable

The repository URL and signing-key URL are published by Yandex. Ubuntu’s guidance on scoped trust anchors and third-party repositories is available in its archive-verification documentation and third-party repository guidance.

Verify the installation and version

Use either package lookup command:

dpkg -l | grep yandex-browser
which yandex-browser

For the user-facing check, launch the browser and open Help → About Yandex Browser. Yandex also documents browser://help as an internal page showing the installed version.

Make Yandex Browser the default

From Ubuntu Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Default Applications.
  3. Set Web or Browser to Yandex Browser.

Labels differ by Ubuntu release, desktop environment, and language.

From Yandex Browser

Open the browser’s settings and use its default-browser control if offered. Menu wording can change between Yandex Browser versions, so use the setting’s search field if the control is not immediately visible.

Keep Yandex Browser updated

If you configured the APT repository

Refresh package indexes and apply normal upgrades:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

This updates Yandex Browser when the configured repository offers a newer package, along with other eligible system updates.

If you installed only a downloaded DEB

Download a newer DEB from Yandex and install it over the existing installation with the same command:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./yandex-browser-stable_*.deb

Yandex states that a newer version can be installed over the existing browser; deleting the old package first is not required. A standalone download does not provide the same automatic repository workflow.

Troubleshooting installation problems

Unsupported architecture

If installation reports an architecture mismatch, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dpkg --print-architecture
uname -m

The official package is amd64. Do not force installation with dpkg --force-architecture; use a supported build or another browser instead.

“Unable to locate package”

The package name yandex-browser-stable works only after the Yandex repository has been configured. Run:

sudo apt update
apt policy yandex-browser-stable

If no candidate appears, inspect /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yandex-browser.list, verify the keyring path, and confirm that the repository URL is exactly https://repo.yandex.ru/yandex-browser/deb. A downloaded DEB can be installed by its path without adding a repository.

Broken dependencies after using dpkg

If you previously used dpkg -i and dependencies remain unfinished, repair the package state:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo apt --fix-broken install
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./yandex-browser-stable_*.deb

Using apt install ./file.deb first avoids this common failure.

Wrong path or permission error

ls -lh ~/Downloads
cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./actual-file-name.deb

Use the filename that actually appears in the directory. The ./ prefix is required for a local file.

The DEB opens in Archive Manager

That is usually a file-association issue, not proof that the package is damaged. Right-click the file, choose Open With, and select App Center or Software Install, or use the Terminal command above.

appindicator1 or python-appindicator error

Yandex’s troubleshooting page mentions installing python-appindicator:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo apt update
apt-cache policy python-appindicator

If the package is available for your release, install it with:

sudo apt install python-appindicator

That package name is not available on every current Ubuntu release. Do not add an unrelated repository merely to obtain it. See Yandex’s installation and update troubleshooting for the vendor’s current qualification.

Signature or key errors

Do not disable APT verification or use --allow-unauthenticated. Confirm the exact Yandex repository URL, re-download https://repo.yandex.ru/yandex-browser/YANDEX-BROWSER-KEY.GPG, check the signed-by path and spelling, then run sudo apt update. If necessary, remove and recreate the repository entry and keyring.

The browser is missing from the application menu

Try yandex-browser in Terminal, then log out and back in or restart the desktop shell. Check the package status with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dpkg -l | grep yandex
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Remove Yandex Browser

To remove the package while keeping system-wide configuration files:

sudo apt remove yandex-browser-stable

To remove the package and its system-wide configuration files:

sudo apt purge yandex-browser-stable
sudo apt autoremove

Browser profiles, bookmarks, cookies, settings, and saved credentials may reside in your home directory and are not necessarily removed by these package commands. Export or back up anything you need before purging or deleting profile directories.

If you configured the repository using the commands in this article and no longer want it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo rm -f /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yandex-browser.list
sudo rm -f /usr/share/keyrings/yandex-browser.gpg
sudo apt update

Is Yandex Browser the right choice for your Ubuntu system?

Install it when you specifically want Yandex Browser or its services. Firefox may be preferable for Ubuntu integration and a non-Chromium engine; Chromium provides a general Chromium-based option; Google Chrome suits users needing Google-specific integration; and Brave focuses on built-in tracker blocking. If you only need Yandex Search or another Yandex service, using it in your existing browser avoids installing another system package.
