How to Fix iTunes Error 0xE8000015 on iPhone, iPad, and Windows or Mac

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you see “iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. An unknown error occurred (0xE8000015),” the code does not identify one specific fault. It means the computer has not established a usable connection with the device. Start with the cable, trust prompt, software, and computer before considering a restore. On supported Windows PCs, Apple Devices—not iTunes—is now Apple’s main app for managing iPhone and iPad backups, updates, and restores.

The checks below are ordered from least disruptive to most disruptive. A normal connection fix should not erase your data. A recovery-mode Restore does erase the device; try Update first when it is offered and preserving data matters.

What error 0xE8000015 means

Apple describes general cases where a computer does not recognize an iPhone or iPad, but does not publish a dedicated diagnosis or single fix for 0xE8000015. Treat it as a recognition or pairing problem, not proof that the iPhone is disabled, the cable is faulty, or the phone needs to be erased. It can appear during backup, sync, update, restore, or an attempt to access a device. Apple’s recognition guidance covers several possible causes, including trust permissions, cable or port problems, outdated software, drivers, and software conflicts. See Apple’s computer-recognition troubleshooting.

First determine whether you can unlock the device. If you can, use the ordinary connection checks below. If it is disabled, passcode-locked, or showing “Connect to computer,” skip to the recovery-mode section; the computer may not be able to establish normal trust while the device is locked.

Use the right Apple app for your computer

Computer App to use Where to find the device
Windows 10 or 11 that supports Apple’s apps Apple Devices for iPhone and iPad management. Install or update it through the Microsoft Store. Use iTunes if Apple Devices is unavailable or the PC does not meet its requirements. Open Apple Devices and select the iPhone or iPad.
macOS Catalina or later Finder In Finder, select the device under Locations, then use General for backup, update, and restore options.
macOS Mojave or earlier iTunes Open iTunes and select the device.

Apple’s current Windows app guidance distinguishes Apple Devices from iTunes. Its Apple Devices installation guide explains installation on Windows. For Mac recovery and device-management steps, see Apple’s recovery-mode instructions.

Try these non-erasing connection fixes first

  1. Unlock the device and accept the trust request. Disconnect it, unlock it with its passcode, then reconnect it using a data-capable cable. If “Trust This Computer?” appears, tap Trust and enter the passcode. Then select the device in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Charging alone does not establish a data connection. Apple explains the trust prompt and its reset options in its Trust This Computer guidance.
  2. Try a known-good data cable and another USB port. Use a cable that supports both charging and data; try a different port directly on the computer instead of through a hub or adapter. Disconnect other USB devices and inspect the iPhone’s charging port for debris. A phone that charges may still lack a working data connection.
  3. Restart both devices. Restart the iPhone or iPad and the computer. Wait for both to start fully, unlock the Apple device, and reconnect it.
  4. Update the software. On Windows, update Apple Devices through the Microsoft Store, or update iTunes there if that is the app you use; also install Windows updates. On Mac, install available macOS updates and use Finder on supported versions. If the iPhone or iPad can be used normally, install the latest iOS or iPadOS version compatible with it.
  5. Try a second computer. If available, connect the device to another computer using a known-good data cable and the appropriate Apple app. This helps distinguish an issue with the device or cable from one specific computer’s software or USB setup.

Apple recommends checking the cable, USB port, computer, device port, software, and possible software conflicts when a computer does not recognize a device: Apple’s recognition troubleshooting.

If “Trust This Computer?” never appears

Make sure the device is unlocked before reconnecting it. If you previously chose “Don’t Trust,” or the trust prompt appears to be stuck, reset the trust decisions on the device:

  1. Open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Location & Privacy.
  2. Reconnect the device while it is unlocked.
  3. When prompted, tap Trust and enter the passcode.

This does not erase photos, apps, or other personal content, but it resets location and privacy permissions as well as trust decisions. On an iPad, the equivalent Settings path uses “Transfer or Reset iPad.” If the prompt still fails, update Apple’s app, disconnect and reconnect, and restart both devices. Apple also advises Windows users with iTunes installed from the Microsoft Store to check that iTunes Mobile Device Helper is enabled as a startup item. A network-settings reset is a later option, not a first step: it removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and VPN/APN settings. See Apple’s trust-alert guidance.

Windows-specific checks

Check whether Windows sees the device or driver

Open Device Manager and check Portable Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers for the iPhone, Apple device, or Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. A warning icon or missing device can point to a driver or connection issue. Where appropriate, update or disable and re-enable the affected device or driver, then restart Windows and reconnect. Apple advises Windows users to update Apple software and drivers through Device Manager; it does not identify any particular driver procedure as a guaranteed fix for 0xE8000015. See Apple’s recognition guidance.

Look for software that interferes with USB communication

Security software, VPNs, endpoint-management tools, or USB-control utilities can sometimes interfere with device communication. Check whether such software is blocking Apple’s app or the connection. Do not leave security protections disabled as a permanent workaround; if changing a setting does not help, restore it. You can also compare with another computer rather than making broad security changes.

Advanced option: rebuild the computer’s pairing records

Third-party troubleshooting guides suggest removing Apple’s Lockdown pairing records to prompt a fresh trust relationship. The commonly reported locations are %ProgramData%AppleLockdown on Windows and /var/db/lockdown on macOS. Apple’s current recognition guidance does not direct users to delete these records, so treat this as an unofficial, advanced step—not a guaranteed fix. It removes existing computer-device trust relationships and may require you to trust the computer again. Examples of this third-party advice include WindowsReport and Stellar.

  1. Close Apple Devices, iTunes, and Finder, then disconnect the iPhone.
  2. Locate the Lockdown folder for your operating system and make a backup copy before changing anything.
  3. Delete only the pairing records in that folder—not unrelated Apple folders or files.
  4. Reconnect the device, unlock it, and accept the trust prompt if it appears.

If the iPhone is disabled or still will not connect

If you cannot unlock the device, or its screen says “Connect to computer,” ordinary trust-based steps may not be possible. Recovery mode lets a computer attempt an iOS reinstall. Apple says a recovery-mode Restore erases the device. If the computer offers both Update and Restore, try Update first if you want to preserve data; it attempts to reinstall iOS without erasing personal data, but preservation is not guaranteed. Review Apple’s recovery-mode steps and its Update versus Restore explanation before proceeding.

Put the iPhone in recovery mode

Connect the iPhone to the computer first. Use the button sequence for its model and keep holding until the “Connect to computer” screen appears:

  • iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later): Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down. Press and hold the Side button.
  • iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side (or Top) button and Volume Down together.
  • iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Press and hold the Home button and the Side (or Top) button together.

Choose Update before Restore when data matters

  1. On a Mac, open Finder. On Windows, open Apple Devices, or iTunes if Apple Devices is unavailable.
  2. Select the iPhone when it appears and choose Update if offered.
  3. Choose Restore only if erasing the device is acceptable or Update fails and you are prepared to lose data currently on it.

If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPhone leaves recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat the button sequence to enter recovery mode again. If the device is disabled because you forgot the passcode and cannot use an available on-device passcode-reset option, a computer restore may be necessary and erases the data on the iPhone. You will need a computer, a data-capable cable, an internet connection, and potentially up to 60 minutes; a backup is needed to recover data after erasure. See Apple’s forgotten-passcode and disabled-device guidance.

If the computer detects the iPhone but an update or restore fails

A recognition problem and a failed restore are not necessarily the same issue. If the device appears in the Apple app but the operation fails, update the Apple app and computer operating system, try a different cable and USB port, and test another computer if possible. Check for third-party security or VPN software that may interfere. If the iPhone exits recovery mode while a download is still underway, let the download complete and enter recovery mode again before retrying. Apple lists these kinds of checks for certain update and restore errors; that page does not establish them as a specific fix for 0xE8000015. See Apple’s update and restore error guidance.

When to stop and contact Apple

Contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider if several known-good cables and computers fail, the port appears damaged, buttons prevent you from entering recovery mode, the device repeatedly disconnects during a restore, or there is evidence of liquid or serious physical damage. Apple notes that service may be needed if recognition checks do not resolve the problem: Apple’s recognition guidance. Avoid treating a third-party “no data loss” or passcode-unlock claim as a guarantee; system repair or restore tools can alter or erase data, and bypassing device security creates additional risks.
