In Ubuntu’s default GNOME desktop, open Files, press Ctrl+L, enter an administrative location such as admin:///etc, and authenticate with an authorized administrator account. This lets you browse protected locations without launching the entire file manager as root. For one text file, sudoedit is often the safer fallback.
“Root” can mean the filesystem’s top-level directory, /, or the superuser account named root. A file can sit under / without being owned by root; system files such as /etc/hosts are commonly root-owned, which is why changing them may require administrator authorization. Ubuntu explains the distinction and its administrator model in its superuser documentation.
Before you edit a protected file
- Use this method on Ubuntu Desktop with GNOME Files (also known as Nautilus). Other Ubuntu flavors, remote sessions, servers without a desktop, containers, and recovery environments may behave differently.
- You need an account authorized to perform administrator actions. On ordinary Ubuntu installations, the first-created user is normally an administrator, the root account is normally disabled, and
sudoasks for the authorized user’s password—not a root password. Local policy can differ; see Ubuntu’s explanation of the superuser. - Identify the exact path and make a backup before changing important configuration. A graphical file manager provides access; it does not check whether the contents you save are valid.
Some files are generated or managed by services, packages, cloud-init, NetworkManager, or other tools. Find out what manages the file before editing it, or your change may be replaced later. For sensitive configuration, use the relevant service’s validation procedure before applying the change.
Open a protected location in Files
- Open Files.
- Press Ctrl+L to activate the location entry. Ubuntu documents this shortcut in its command-line and filesystem basics.
- Enter an administrative URI with the absolute path of the target. For example, to browse the system configuration directory, enter
admin:///etc. - Press Enter and approve the authentication prompt. Use the password for an account authorized to administer the system.
- Navigate to the file, open it in a text editor, make the necessary change, and save. Close the administrative location when finished.
The URI uses the admin:// scheme followed by an absolute path, so it has three slashes before a path beginning with /. Use admin:///etc, not admin://etc or simply /etc. This GNOME/GVfs approach handles privileged file operations through desktop authorization rather than giving the whole file manager superuser privileges; see the community guidance on the administrative URI.

Examples of administrative locations
admin:///etc/hosts— a hosts file; changes can affect name resolution.admin:///etc/fstab— a mount configuration file; an error can prevent filesystems from mounting correctly.admin:///etc/ssh— SSH configuration; validate relevant settings before relying on them.admin:///var/www— a web-serving directory, if it exists on your system.
For high-impact files, back up the individual file before editing. For example, an ordinary local-file backup can be made with sudo cp -a /etc/example.conf /etc/example.conf.bak. The -a option preserves metadata in usual local filesystem situations, but behavior can vary for unusual filesystems, symlinks, mounts, and special files. Do not make blanket copies of whole system directories as a substitute for understanding the target.
If the editor opens the file but cannot save
Opening a directory through admin:/// does not guarantee that every editor can save every file through that location. The editor may have been opened separately as a normal user, may not support the administrative GVfs location, or may be confined by its package sandbox. A remote session, a read-only mount, a symlink, or a special filesystem object can also prevent a normal save.
For one known text file, use sudoedit from Terminal:

sudoedit /etc/hosts
sudoedit creates or uses a temporary editable copy, runs the editor as your normal user, then installs the changed file with administrator authorization. This limits elevated access to the write-back operation rather than running the editor itself as root. The editor-selection method is configuration-dependent; if needed, set SUDO_EDITOR to the executable for an editor you have installed, for example:
SUDO_EDITOR=gedit sudoedit /etc/hosts
gedit may not be installed; newer Ubuntu setups may use a different text editor, so substitute its actual command. See the discussion of sudoedit and graphical text editors. Ubuntu also cautions that commands run with sudo have superuser powers, so check the command and path before proceeding.
Optional right-click actions on Ubuntu 24.04
Ubuntu 24.04’s Noble package listing includes nautilus-admin, an optional Nautilus extension for administrative actions. The checked Launchpad listing identifies version 1.1.9-3.3 for Noble; that version and availability should not be assumed for other releases. The package is in the Universe component. Its menu actions and editor integration depend on the installed version and software.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install nautilus-admin
Depending on the package and installed editor, context menus may offer actions such as Open as Administrator or Edit as Administrator. This is a convenience, not a universal built-in feature, and may invoke larger graphical applications with elevated privileges. Check the Ubuntu Noble package listing for the specific package details.
Why not run sudo nautilus?
A command such as sudo nautilus gives the entire file manager superuser authority. Every operation in that window—including a mistaken move, overwrite, or deletion—can affect protected parts of the system. Applications launched from a root-owned file-manager window can also create files owned by root in your home directory. It is an unnecessarily broad privilege and may cause ownership side effects, even though damage is not inevitable. Prefer admin:/// for browsing or sudoedit for one text file. Ubuntu’s sudo guidance emphasizes treating elevated commands carefully.

Troubleshoot access and save problems
| What happens | What to check or do |
|---|---|
| “Permission denied” | Confirm the location was opened with admin:/// and that the target is an ordinary file you intend to change. Try sudoedit /absolute/path/to/file. If the filesystem may be read-only, inspect its mount options with findmnt -no TARGET,OPTIONS --target /path/to/file. |
| Authentication fails | Use the password for the current account authorized to administer Ubuntu; a normal installation does not require a root-account password. Confirm the account has administrator rights. In a remote session, PolicyKit may not provide the same prompt as a local desktop. |
| The file is visible, but the editor will not save | Close the ordinary editor and reopen the file from the administrative location. If that fails, use sudoedit. Avoid editing a home-directory copy and replacing the original with a plain mv unless ownership, modes, symlinks, ACLs, and extended attributes have been checked. |
admin:/// is not recognized |
You may not be using GNOME Files, the needed GVfs components may be absent or damaged, or the session may be restricted, remote, or nonstandard. Use the single-file terminal fallback rather than an untrusted third-party script. |
| The filesystem is read-only | Authentication cannot make a read-only mount writable. Check mount options and resolve the underlying disk, filesystem, encryption, or recovery-mode issue instead of repeatedly retrying the save. |
| A sandboxed editor cannot access the file | Snap or other confinement can restrict an editor’s access to system paths. Try a supported editor through sudoedit; do not assume all editors can save through an administrative GVfs location. |
| The target may be a symlink or special file | Inspect it with ls -l /path/to/file and, for a symlink, readlink -f /path/to/file. Do not replace a symlink casually. Device nodes and other special objects are not ordinary text files. |
| Your change disappears later | Check whether a service, package, cloud-init, or another system tool generates the file, and use that tool’s supported configuration path for persistent changes. |
Verify ownership, permissions, and the change
After editing a critical file, inspect its owner and mode:

ls -l /etc/hosts
For output resembling -rw-r--r-- 1 root root ..., the first root is the owner and the second is the group. Do not change ownership just to make future editing easier. The intended benefit of editing through an administrative location is to change the file without casually replacing its normal ownership or permissions; verify important files, especially if a symlink, replacement operation, or unusual filesystem is involved.
To compare an edited file with a backup, use:
sudo diff -u /etc/hosts.backup /etc/hosts
For configuration files, validate with the relevant service-specific checker before restarting or relying on the service. A malformed file may disrupt networking, login, mounts, or boot even when it was saved successfully.
If the edit prevents Ubuntu from starting
Boot from an Ubuntu recovery environment or live USB, mount the installed system filesystem, and restore the individual backup or correct the configuration. If the file belongs to a package or service, use its own recovery or validation method. Avoid broad repairs such as recursive chmod or chown across system directories.
Ownership and permissions are part of Linux’s security model: directory permissions govern actions such as creating, removing, or renaming entries, which can differ from whether a particular file is writable. Recursive changes can expose protected data or break packages and services. Do not use commands such as sudo chown -R "$USER":"$USER" /etc or sudo chmod -R 777 /etc; Ubuntu’s file permissions guide explains why such broad changes are unsafe.
