If you want just one monitor or an application, use a selection or window capture instead. Arrange your displays first if you need them to appear in a particular order.
Choose what you need to capture
A multi-monitor desktop is treated as one logical workspace when displays are extended. Its arrangement and size depend on how the monitors are positioned in your operating system’s display settings. Decide which result you want before choosing a shortcut:
- All connected monitors: Capture the full screen or virtual desktop. On systems with extended displays, the image can include the workspace spanning those displays.
- One monitor: Capture that display alone if your system’s capture controls offer a screen choice, or draw a rectangular selection around it. A rectangle is often easier when displays use different resolutions or scaling.
- One application: Use window capture. This avoids including unrelated material on the other monitors.
- Only part of the desktop: Use a rectangle or freeform selection, depending on the capture tool.
“Multiple screens” can mean an extended desktop or mirrored displays. With Extend or Join Displays, each monitor contributes a separate area to the desktop. With Duplicate or Mirror, displays show the same content, so capturing the desktop does not create distinct content for each monitor.

Capture the whole virtual screen
- Arrange your displays under Settings > System > Display. Select Identify to see which number belongs to each monitor, then drag the display diagrams to match your physical arrangement.
- If you want separate desktop areas, press Windows+P and choose Extend. Other choices include PC screen only, Duplicate, and Second screen only.
- Press Print Screen to capture the entire virtual screen. Microsoft describes this behavior for multiple monitors as: “PRINTSCRN takes a snapshot of the entire virtual screen.”
A full virtual-screen capture reflects the logical arrangement of the displays, not necessarily a neat, same-sized rectangle. If monitors are offset or have different dimensions, the resulting desktop geometry follows that arrangement.

Capture a full screen, one display, a window, or a selection
- Press Windows+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool’s capture controls.
- Choose Full screen, Rectangle, Window, or Freeform, as appropriate.
- For a single monitor area, choose Rectangle and drag around the display. For one application, choose Window and select its window.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool to edit, save, or share it.
To capture only the active application window, press Alt+Print Screen. This is usually a better choice than capturing the entire desktop when the other monitors contain private or irrelevant content.
Take a screenshot on macOS
Capture the screen or a selected area
- Press Command-Shift-3 to capture the screen.
- Press Command-Shift-4, then drag over the area you want, to capture a selection. You can draw around one monitor if you want to omit the rest of the workspace.
On a multi-monitor Mac, choose the scope deliberately: the whole screen, a region, a window, or a particular display may suit different tasks. A selection is a practical way to isolate one display, particularly when monitors have different resolutions or scaling.
Use the Screenshot app and choose where the capture goes
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, the Screenshot app provides additional capture controls. You can use its on-screen controls to capture a screen or selected area, and use the screenshot thumbnail controls to save the image to the desktop or copy it to the clipboard. If a keyboard shortcut seems to have produced no file, check whether the result was copied rather than saved.

Take a screenshot on Ubuntu with GNOME
Choose Screen, Window, or Selection
- Press Print to open the screenshot overlay.
- Choose Screen for the entire screen, Window for an application window, or Selection for a rectangular area.
- Press the capture button. Ubuntu saves the image in Pictures/Screenshots and copies it to the clipboard.
For direct shortcuts, press Shift+Print to capture the entire screen or Alt+Print to capture the focused window.

Set the monitor arrangement
Open Settings > Displays and drag the monitor diagrams into the arrangement that matches your desk. You can also choose a primary display. Ubuntu supports Join Displays and Mirror; when more than two screens are connected, Join Displays is the available mode.
Where the screenshot is saved—and how to find it
The save behavior depends on the operating system and the capture method. A shortcut may copy an image to the clipboard, create a file, or open a capture in a tool with save controls. Do not assume that every shortcut immediately creates a file in the same place.

- Windows: With Windows+Shift+S, open the result in Snipping Tool to save it. If the capture is only on the clipboard, paste it into an image editor and save it there.
- macOS: The Screenshot app’s thumbnail controls can save a capture to the desktop or copy it to the clipboard. Check those controls if you cannot find a file.
- Ubuntu/GNOME: The screenshot overlay saves captures in Pictures/Screenshots and copies them to the clipboard.
If you need to send the image immediately, clipboard capture can be convenient. If you need a durable file for a report, tutorial, or bug ticket, use the capture tool’s save controls and confirm the file is where you expect it.
Fix cropped, misplaced, or missing captures
The monitors appear in the wrong order or part of the desktop is missing
Check the display arrangement before taking another screenshot. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select Identify, and reposition the diagrams. In Ubuntu, open Settings > Displays and correct the diagram arrangement. A screenshot captures the logical layout configured by the operating system, so a mismatched layout can make the result look misplaced or cropped.

The shortcut copied an image, but there is no file
Use the capture interface’s save controls, or paste the clipboard image into an image editor and save it. Ubuntu’s overlay both saves a file in Pictures/Screenshots and copies it, while macOS Screenshot controls let you choose saving or copying. On Windows, open the capture in Snipping Tool to save or edit it.

The screenshot includes the other monitor when you wanted one
Use a rectangle or selection around the display you want, or choose a screen-specific option if your capture controls provide one. For a single application, choose window capture instead of capturing the entire virtual desktop.
The image is awkwardly sized or has empty-looking areas
Check whether displays are extended or mirrored, then review their relative positions and dimensions in display settings. A full virtual-screen image represents the configured desktop geometry; monitors with unequal dimensions or offsets do not necessarily form a simple, aligned rectangle. Use a selection when you need a clean crop for documentation.

- Arrange the displays so the screenshot presents them in the intended order.
- Choose whether the reader needs the whole desktop, one display, or one application. Capture no more than the explanation requires.
- Close unrelated windows and hide notifications or other transient overlays before capturing.
- Use a selection to trim unused desktop space, then inspect the saved image before sharing it.
For troubleshooting, include enough context to show the relevant window or monitor, but avoid exposing unrelated messages, account details, or other private information on adjacent screens.

Frequently asked questions
Will one screenshot make a separate file for each monitor?
The full-screen commands described here capture a screen or virtual desktop as an image; they are not a procedure for automatically creating a separate image file for every attached monitor. Use a screen-specific capture or select each display when you need individual images.
Can I capture a webpage across multiple monitors with a desktop shortcut?
A desktop screenshot records what is visible in the operating system’s display area. For a webpage capture that should include content beyond the visible viewport, use a webpage screenshot tool with full-page capture rather than treating it as a monitor screenshot.
