A Google Play screenshot generator should help you turn accurate captures of your app into clear, correctly sized store images—not make up an app experience your users will never see. For a standard listing, Google requires at least two screenshots across device types, while its recommendation guidance calls for more high-resolution images. Capture the current app, compose images for the device categories you support, check the dimensions and content rules, then manage the finished files in Play Console’s Asset Library.
Google Play screenshot requirements at a glance
Google distinguishes the requirements to publish a listing from recommendations intended to help an app qualify for screenshot-led promotional surfaces. Meeting the minimum does not mean you have followed every recommendation, and recommendation-oriented image counts are not a substitute for the technical rules.

The dimension limits are publishing rules; the larger counts and resolutions are recommendation-oriented guidance. Google says assets may appear on more than the full listing page, including search and home surfaces, and may follow a preview video. Design for legibility after reduction or cropping, not just at full size. A policy violation can lead to removal or suspension; recommendations affect promotional opportunities or display.
Choose the device categories before making images
A phone-only set is not automatically a complete set for every kind of Android app. Play Console has asset categories for phones, 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, Chromebooks, Android TV, Wear OS, Android Automotive OS, and Android XR. Prepare assets for the categories relevant to your app rather than stretching one generic phone composition across every screen shape.

These category-specific details do not establish that every app must upload every category’s assets. Check the current Play Console requirements for your app type and target device category before exporting; Automotive OS requirements in particular depend on app category.
What a good Play listing screenshot should show
Use genuine, current captures of the app or game. The images should reflect what a person will encounter after installing and make the core features easy to understand. A layout tool can add restrained captions or arrange captures, but it should not disguise the experience or turn a concept screen into a false product claim.

- Make the first three images UI-forward. Google allows stylized images that connect across multiple uploads, but prioritizes the app interface in the first three.
- Use a tagline only when it adds necessary context. Text should take no more than 20% of the image.
- Do not add rankings, accolades, awards, testimonials, prices, or promotional claims such as “Best,” “#1,” “Top,” “Discount,” or “Million downloads.”
- Check that important interface details and captions remain readable at reduced sizes and after potential cropping.
- Keep device-specific layouts faithful to the actual app experience on that class of device.
For games, choose scenes that show actual gameplay rather than relying on title art alone. For apps, a sequence can explain a useful task—from the first meaningful screen to a completed action—provided each image remains an honest depiction of the product.
How to make and upload the screenshots
- Decide what the listing needs. Identify the supported device categories and the key features or gameplay moments the images need to communicate. Plan separate compositions where screen proportions or category rules differ.
- Capture the real app. Use an Android device or capture in Android Studio. On many Android devices, press and hold Power and Volume-down together to take a screenshot. Capture representative, current screens; avoid personal information, test artifacts, or temporary error states.
- Compose the set. Use a design tool or screenshot maker to arrange the captures, add any necessary short copy, and create category-appropriate exports. Preserve the app interface as the primary evidence of what the product does.
- Validate every export. Check format, opacity, pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, category-specific requirements, and legibility. Do not assume that a file accepted by an image editor meets Play’s limits.
- Manage the assets in Play Console. The Asset Library centralizes listing graphics for main and custom listings, experiments, and events. You can upload from a computer or Google Drive, crop to a new copy, filter by aspect ratio, language, asset type, use, and tag, and create tags to organize work by campaign, app version, or theme.
Capture tools, composition tools, and device frames
Android Studio and direct device capture are ways to obtain the source images; a screenshot maker is for arranging and exporting them. Play Console’s Asset Library is for managing and reusing listing assets after creation. These are different jobs, so choose a workflow based on where the time-consuming work is: getting a reliable current capture, designing consistent layouts, creating device-specific variants, or organizing many exports.

Google’s Device Art Generator is intended to wrap captures in device artwork for websites and other promotional uses. Android Developers explicitly warns not to use graphics made there in Google Play feature images or listing screenshots, and recommends using the screenshot alone without framing. Do not put a phone mockup around a listing screenshot simply because a generator offers a frame.
A third-party example is App Asset Kit, whose vendor describes uploading real captures, adding focused copy, choosing device sizes, and exporting an organized ZIP in a browser. Treat a vendor’s requirements summary as secondary: Google’s current Play guidance is the authority for policy. Whichever composition workflow you choose, verify the output against the applicable Google rules yourself.

Troubleshooting common export problems
- Play rejects the image dimensions: Check both pixel dimensions and the long-side-to-short-side ratio. An image can fall within the minimum and maximum pixel counts yet still fail because its long dimension is more than twice its short dimension.
- A PNG is rejected or appears with an unexpected background: Export an opaque 24-bit PNG without alpha, or use JPEG. Recheck the actual exported file rather than relying on the editor’s canvas settings.
- The screenshot looks cramped or unreadable in the listing: Rework the composition for the target device category and preview it at a reduced size. Keep critical UI and any short copy away from likely crop areas.
- A framed image is not suitable for the listing: Remove the device artwork and export the app screenshot alone. Device Art Generator output is for other promotional contexts, not the Play listing screenshot or feature image.
- A set meets minimum publishing rules but seems weak for recommendations: Compare it with the separate guidance for app or game counts and resolutions. Publishing minima and recommendation-oriented guidance serve different purposes.
- One export does not look right across several device categories: Make separate category-aware compositions when interface proportions or category rules call for them. Do not assume that resizing a phone image creates an accurate tablet, TV, watch, car, or XR image.
Reliability and cost: keep capture separate from compliance
A screenshot generator can save composition time, but it cannot make an inaccurate capture truthful or guarantee that an upload complies with current Play policy. Retain a clean source capture, export copies for each intended category, and check the final files before upload. This also makes it easier to revise a caption or size without having to recapture a screen.
You do not need to buy a device-frame tool or physical capture accessory to complete this workflow: Google documents Android Studio and direct device capture, and the Device Art guidance discourages framed output for listing images. A paid composition tool is optional; its value depends on whether templates, captions, language variants, or batch export solve a real workload. No tool’s marketing summary supersedes Google’s requirements.
