To know when a website is genuinely broken—and keep useful evidence—run a scheduled browser check that tests a visitor-visible outcome, capture a screenshot when the check fails, and send an alert with a link to the retained artifact. An HTTP status check is a useful first layer, but a successful response alone does not prove that a page rendered or that a user can finish a key task.
Choose a monitor that detects the failure you care about
Monitoring options answer different questions. Start with the failure mode, then select a check that can observe it.

For basic reachability, an HTTP check is inexpensive in complexity and should be part of a monitoring baseline. For client-rendered pages, sign-in, checkout, or another flow with user-visible steps, use a browser-based synthetic check. Better Stack documents Playwright scenarios for browser checks and API assertions; Checkly presents Playwright suites as production synthetic monitors. Keep visual-change monitoring as a separate signal. UptimeRobot describes a website-change feature that periodically captures a screenshot and alerts when it detects a visual difference. That is useful for drift detection, but it is not the same as capturing a diagnostic screenshot specifically when a check errors. Its monitor types are described in UptimeRobot’s help center.

Design a browser check around user impact
A check should prove a small but meaningful outcome. Opening the home page and receiving a response is not enough if the concern is whether someone can sign in, submit a form, or place an order.
Pick the smallest critical journey
- For a marketing page, assert that the signup control or its expected label is visible.
- For authentication, reach the dashboard after sign-in and assert the resulting page or URL.
- For checkout, test a safe, non-purchasing path through the critical steps, stopping before any irreversible action.
- For an API-backed page, assert both the successful response and the expected data or fields rather than checking status alone.
Better Stack’s official example sets a mobile viewport, opens a page, and checks that its text contains “Sign up.” Its sign-in example waits for the dashboard URL. These are useful patterns because the assertion represents something a visitor needs to see, rather than merely confirming navigation began.
Use stable assertions and test data
Prefer accessible roles, labels, stable text, or explicit test identifiers over brittle selectors tied to layout. Avoid relying on changing marketing copy or ad content. If the journey requires credentials, use a dedicated low-privilege monitoring account and the monitor’s secrets or environment-variable facility. Better Stack documents environment variables for scenario secrets and cautions that metadata values are not redacted; do not place passwords, tokens, or personal data in incident metadata.
Decide what constitutes success before setting alert thresholds. A missing button may be a real incident; a transient third-party analytics request may not be. Keep the test focused on the service outcome that matters to users.

Capturing an image, retaining it, and attaching or linking it in an alert are separate behaviors. Confirm all three for the monitor configuration you intend to use before relying on screenshots for incident response.

For a self-managed Playwright test
Use Playwright’s screenshot API to capture the page or a relevant element when the assertion fails, then retain the test-run artifact in your CI or monitoring system. The exact artifact-upload and retention steps depend on the runner; the official API reference explains screenshot options at Playwright screenshots. A screenshot can be full-page or viewport-only; choose based on whether the failure is a missing lower-page section or an above-the-fold rendering issue.
For a hosted synthetic monitor
Check the provider’s settings and documentation for when it captures screenshots, how long it retains them, who can access them, and whether an alert links to the artifact. Checkly advertises screenshot captures, video replays, and traces for failed monitors. Do not assume every vendor’s browser monitor includes those capabilities by default. Better Stack’s documented Playwright scenario and failure alerting guide does not establish automatic screenshot capture or alert attachment, so verify that capability separately before selecting it for screenshot-on-error workflows.
Capture enough context to diagnose, not just decorate
An incident record is most useful when it identifies the failed flow and step, the time and execution location, the assertion that failed, and a link to whatever screenshot, video, trace, or logs the platform retains. Avoid storing sensitive information in screenshots or metadata: authenticated pages may expose customer data even when the monitor account itself is synthetic.
Set schedules, retries, locations, and alerts deliberately
Run checks frequently enough to meet your detection needs, but account for the cost of false alarms and the time a retry policy adds before confirmation. Route alerts to a destination watched by people able to respond. Configure failure and performance alerts where supported, and include artifact links rather than copying sensitive page data into the alert.
Retries are vendor-specific controls, not a universal setting. Better Stack shows up to two retries in a Playwright example. UptimeRobot’s help article dated July 31, 2026 describes up to three retries for certain failures and a default timeout of 30 seconds configurable from 1 to 60 seconds. That same UptimeRobot guidance says checks rotate through regions without requiring agreement from multiple locations; do not assume other services behave the same way. Retries can filter brief network blips, but each retry delays the alert. A multi-location agreement policy can reduce the chance that one regional problem triggers an incident, but it can also delay notice of a real regional outage. Choose based on your service’s geography and the consequences of a missed or delayed alert.
Build the workflow step by step
- Define the incident. State the user-visible failure you want detected: unreachable endpoint, missing content, failed sign-in, or another broken journey.
- Add a reachability check. Monitor the relevant endpoint and define accepted status codes and timeout behavior in the service’s current UI. Treat this as the first layer, not proof that the rendered experience works.
- Create a browser scenario for the critical path. Use a maintained browser runner such as Playwright or a hosted synthetic-monitoring service. Set the viewport if mobile behavior matters, navigate to the target, and assert the expected outcome.
- Arrange evidence on failure. Configure screenshot capture and artifact storage in the runner or hosted platform; confirm retention and alert access. If video or traces are available, decide whether the additional context is useful.
- Store secrets safely. Put credentials in the monitor’s secret or environment-variable store, use a dedicated test account, and keep secret values out of metadata and alert messages.
- Set frequency and retry policy. Balance detection speed against transient failures and alert delay. Check how the chosen provider handles locations and retries rather than borrowing another provider’s defaults.
- Connect an alert destination. Notify the responsible team or channel, and include the failed step, time, location, and link to retained evidence where supported.
- Test the failure path. Make a controlled assertion fail in a safe environment. Confirm that the monitor marks the run failed, creates the artifact, retains it, and exposes the expected link in the alert.
- Review after changes. Update assertions when the user journey changes, and periodically verify that credentials, selectors, artifact retention, and destinations remain valid.

Troubleshoot common monitoring failures
The monitor is green, but users report a broken page
The check may only validate an HTTP response or navigation. Add a browser assertion for the missing content, control, or completion state. Confirm that the monitor is exercising the same relevant route and viewport as affected users.
The monitor fails intermittently
Review the failed step, timeout, network dependencies, and location information. Determine whether the failure is in your application or a third-party dependency. A retry may filter a transient failure, but it increases detection delay; avoid increasing retries before understanding the cause.

An alert arrives without a screenshot
Check whether the provider captures screenshots for this monitor type and failure state, whether capture is enabled, and whether the artifact is retained and linked in the alert. Screenshot, retention, and alert attachment are independent configuration questions.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for a meaningful page condition rather than assuming navigation completion means rendering is finished. Browser checks can wait for a selector, visible content, or an application-specific ready state. For lazy-loaded content, scroll or otherwise trigger loading before a full-page capture, then confirm the image contains the expected region.
Credentials or test data appear in incident details
Remove secrets and personal data from metadata and alert payloads. Keep credentials in the provider’s secret store, use a dedicated synthetic account, and ensure screenshots do not expose real customer information.
The visual-change monitor reports noisy differences
Dynamic content, rotating promotions, timestamps, and personalized regions may change without indicating an outage. Where the product permits it, narrow the monitored region or adjust sensitivity; use a browser assertion for functional health rather than treating every visual difference as an error.
Compare monitoring services on operational details
When choosing a hosted service, compare the behavior that affects diagnosis and response, not just the word “monitoring” on a feature list.

Use visual monitoring to detect appearance changes and a browser check to validate behavior. They can complement each other, but they answer different questions.

Only if access to the alert and artifact is appropriately restricted and the page contains no data that should not be retained or shared. Prefer synthetic accounts and minimal test data.
