To take a screenshot of a URL with an API, send an authenticated HTTPS request containing the URL, choose the output and rendering options, then save the binary response as an image or PDF. A typical request looks like this:

GET https://api.screenshotone.com/take?url=https://apple.com&access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY

The same workflow applies to hosted services such as ScreenshotOne, Urlbox, and ScreenshotNeo, or to an API you build around Playwright or Puppeteer. This guide covers full-page captures, CSS-selector elements, dynamic pages, error handling, and the trade-offs between a hosted API and running your own browser.

How a screenshot API works

A screenshot API receives a URL (or HTML), authenticates your request, opens the page in a browser, renders it, and returns binary image data or a PDF. Your application does not need to install a browser when you use a hosted service. You do need to treat the response as bytes rather than JSON unless the provider documents a separate error mode.

  1. Create an account and obtain an API key.
  2. Call the HTTPS endpoint and URL-encode query values, or send a JSON POST body for large HTML.
  3. Set rendering options such as format, viewport, delay, full-page mode, selector, or interaction.
  4. Write the response to a file or object store.
  5. Check HTTP status, quotas, timeouts, and provider-specific headers before declaring success.

ScreenshotOne’s documentation explicitly says to always call its API over HTTPS. Its options include url and html inputs, PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, PDF, HTML, and Markdown outputs, plus interactions such as click and hover.

First request: capture a URL with cURL

Use the provider’s credential and save the binary body directly. The ScreenshotOne-style request below is suitable for a quick test:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotone.com/take"
  --data-urlencode "url=https://apple.com"
  --data-urlencode "access_key=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY"
  -o apple.png

--data-urlencode prevents spaces, ampersands, and other URL characters from breaking the query string. A successful response is an image file; use the provider’s documented error format or HTTP status to diagnose failures.

Capture with JavaScript, Python, and Node.js

Browser-side or server-side JavaScript with fetch

const params = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: process.env.SCREENSHOT_ACCESS_KEY,
  url: 'https://example.com'
});

const response = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotone.com/take?${params}`);
if (!response.ok) {
  throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${response.status} ${await response.text()}`);
}
const image = Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer());
await require('node:fs').promises.writeFile('example.png', image);

Keep the access key on your server, never in browser JavaScript shipped to users. For large HTML payloads, use the provider’s POST JSON endpoint instead of putting the document in a query string.

Python requests

import requests

response = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotone.com/take",
    params={
        "access_key": "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY",
        "url": "https://example.com",
    },
    timeout=90,
)
response.raise_for_status()
with open("example.png", "wb") as file:
    file.write(response.content)

The timeout is important for pages that load fonts, images, or client-side data. Add retries in your job queue rather than an unbounded request loop.

Node.js example for ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo’s API base is https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot. Its complete minimal request is:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

For production, check res.ok, inspect the response headers, and write await res.arrayBuffer() to a file. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current parameter list and response details.

Full-page screenshots

A viewport screenshot captures only what fits in the browser window. Full-page mode measures the document and stitches or renders the entire scrollable page. Enable the provider’s documented full-page option and allow extra time for lazy-loaded content.

curl -G "https://api.urlbox.com/v1/render"
  --data-urlencode "url=https://urlbox.com"
  --data-urlencode "full_page=true"
  -o full-page.png

Urlbox documents { "url": "https://urlbox.com", "full_page": true } for this use case. It also documents skip_scroll when the initial lazy-load scroll is unnecessary and full_width for pages that scroll horizontally. Names differ between vendors, so map these concepts to the service you selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lazy images and dynamic content

  • Use a wait-for-network-idle option when the page fetches data after navigation.
  • Use a selector wait when a specific chart, table, or hero image signals that rendering is complete.
  • Use a controlled delay when the site has animations or delayed hydration.
  • For very long pages, test memory and maximum-height limits before enabling full-page capture in bulk.

Capture one element with a CSS selector

Element capture is useful for receipts, product cards, dashboards, or a component preview. Urlbox documents this request shape:

{
  "url": "https://example.com",
  "selector": "#element-to-screenshot"
}

The selector must match an element after the page has loaded. If it matches nothing, providers commonly return an error or a blank result; wait for the selector and verify it in browser developer tools first. A selector can also be paired with a full-page request when you need the page context for scripts but only want one component in the output.

Rendering options worth exposing in your integration

A robust wrapper should expose options rather than hard-code one browser state. Compare providers on the following capabilities:

Requirement Why it matters
URL and HTML input URL captures live sites; HTML input renders generated templates or private previews.
Format and quality PNG preserves sharp text, JPEG is smaller for photos, WebP often balances both; PDF is suited to documents.
Viewport, device, and scale Lets you reproduce desktop, mobile, and retina layouts.
Full-page and selector capture Supports complete pages or a single component.
Click and hover Opens menus, dismisses overlays, or activates state before capture.
Wait controls Selector, delay, or network-idle waits reduce races with client rendering.
Headers, cookies, and user agent Enables authenticated or locale-specific pages; protect these secrets.
Interaction and blocking Blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types can improve consistency and speed.
Asynchronous jobs and webhooks Prevents long-running HTTP requests from tying up web workers.
Rate limits, size limits, and retention Determine whether the service fits sensitive data and batch workloads.

Do not assume an option exists because another API has it. Read the selected provider’s parameter documentation and record the exact defaults in your own API contract.

Build it yourself with Playwright

Self-managed Playwright gives direct browser control but transfers browser binaries, isolation, scaling, and maintenance to your team. Install Playwright and its browser, then use the official JavaScript pattern:

const { webkit } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await webkit.launch();
  const context = await browser.newContext({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
  const page = await context.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
  await browser.close();
})();

For a full page, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });. For one element, use await page.locator('.header').screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });. Add explicit navigation and locator timeouts, close the browser in a finally block, and run untrusted URLs in isolated workers with restricted network access.

Puppeteer alternative

Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array by default or a base64 string when the encoding option is set to base64. Choose it when your existing Node.js stack already uses Puppeteer; the same operational concerns—browser updates, concurrency, sandboxing, and retries—still apply.

Hosted API or your own browser?

Choose a hosted API when… Choose Playwright or Puppeteer when…
You want a stable HTTP interface for previews, reports, monitoring, or batches. You need unrestricted browser automation or custom lifecycle control.
You do not want to maintain browser binaries and worker pools. Your team can operate browsers, isolation, scaling, and patching.
Predictable per-request accounting is preferable. High sustained volume makes infrastructure economics attractive after operations are counted.

There is no universal latency, reliability, or price winner in the available documentation. Measure your own URLs, page sizes, regions, concurrency, and retry behavior. Before committing, verify authentication, URL versus HTML input, formats, device controls, interactions, asynchronous delivery, rate limits, privacy, retention, and error semantics.

ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie and consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Its 63 options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector elements, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, hide selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names for easier migration.

Troubleshooting checklist

401 or 403 authentication errors

Check that the key is active, sent in the documented parameter or header, and not being stripped by a proxy. Rotate exposed keys and keep them server-side.

400 invalid URL or parameter

Send a fully qualified URL including https://, URL-encode query values, and verify spelling and data types. For large HTML, switch to the documented JSON POST request.

Timeouts and navigation failures

Raise the client timeout within the provider’s limit, wait for a meaningful selector instead of an arbitrary long delay, and retry transient failures with exponential backoff. Check whether the target blocks automated browsers or requires authentication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blank or incomplete images

Confirm that the selector exists, wait for client-side rendering, allow lazy images to load, and disable animations with custom CSS when supported. Compare a normal browser load with the same viewport and user agent.

Wrong mobile or desktop layout

Set viewport width and height explicitly, select the intended device preset, and account for device scale factor. A responsive breakpoint can change when the browser chrome or viewport differs from your local test.

Large files, quota errors, or slow batches

Choose WebP or JPEG when lossless PNG is unnecessary, resize after capture where supported, use asynchronous jobs or bulk endpoints, and monitor usage before hitting a hard limit. Cache stable URLs with a deliberate TTL, but do not cache pages containing user-specific data.

Production reliability and security

  • Validate and allow-list destination URLs if users can submit them; otherwise your service can become an SSRF proxy.
  • Redact credentials from logs and never log full cookie or Authorization values.
  • Set bounded connect, navigation, and total-job timeouts.
  • Retry only transient network and server errors; do not blindly retry invalid requests.
  • Store response metadata such as status, format, viewport, provider request ID, and billing result.
  • Use idempotency keys or deterministic object names for queued jobs.
  • Test pages with consent dialogs, bot checks, long lazy lists, custom fonts, and authenticated redirects.

FAQ

Can an API screenshot private pages?

Only when the service supports the required authentication mechanism, such as headers or cookies, and your data-handling policy permits sending that content to a hosted renderer. Self-managed browsers keep rendering inside your infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I return the image directly from my web endpoint?

For small, synchronous previews you can stream the binary response with the correct content type. For long pages or batches, queue a job and return a status URL or signed download link.

Is a full-page screenshot always one very tall image?

Not necessarily. Providers may stitch a tall image, impose height limits, or offer PDF pagination. Check documented limits and select PDF when printed pages are the actual requirement.
