Puppeteer’s PDF options mostly control rendering and layout; the documentation does not promise that changing them will reduce file size. Measure the output and check its appearance and usability rather than relying on a universal compression percentage.
Start with the print output, not a compression setting
Page.pdf() renders the page with the print CSS media type by default. That means print-specific rules can determine which content appears in the PDF. Review those rules first: remove material that readers do not need on paper, hide navigation or other screen-only interface elements, and ensure print styles do not create unnecessarily large page areas.
If you actually need the screen version of the page, set the media type explicitly before generating the PDF:
await page.emulateMediaType('screen');
const pdf = await page.pdf({ path: 'output.pdf' });
Use this only when screen styling is the intended output. Switching media types can change pagination, colors, visibility, and layout; it is not inherently a size optimization.

Check what print CSS includes
Look for large images, repeated decorative elements, backgrounds, and content that should not be printed. A page may also have print-only material that is not needed in the document. Remove or resize content at its source where possible, then regenerate and compare.
Keep the original while testing
Save a baseline PDF before changing CSS or options. Compare each change separately so you can identify whether a smaller file came from the content change, a layout change, or a later rewriting step.
Set Puppeteer’s PDF options deliberately
The Puppeteer PDFOptions reference documents the defaults below. They affect rendering and page geometry; the documentation does not describe them as compression controls.
| Option | Documented default | What to check |
|---|---|---|
printBackground |
false |
Enable it only if the PDF needs background graphics. Backgrounds can add content, but the actual file-size effect depends on the page and should be measured. |
preferCSSPageSize |
false |
When true, CSS @page dimensions take priority over the API’s paper format, width, or height. Otherwise, content is scaled to fit the configured paper size. |
scale |
1 |
The documented range is 0.1 to 2. Changing scale can affect fit and legibility; it is not documented as a way to compress a PDF. |
waitForFonts |
true |
This controls readiness before printing, not compression. Do not disable it as a file-size fix. |
Make page size unambiguous
Decide whether the CSS @page rule or the Puppeteer call should control the paper size. If CSS should take priority, use preferCSSPageSize: true and define the intended size in CSS. Otherwise, specify a format or dimensions in the PDF options and account for scaling. An unexpected page size or scale can produce an unwanted layout even if it does not increase bytes.
const pdf = await page.pdf({
path: 'output.pdf',
format: 'A4',
printBackground: false,
preferCSSPageSize: false,
scale: 1
});
This example makes the output choices explicit; it does not guarantee a smaller file. If the page’s design depends on background graphics or CSS-defined paper dimensions, change the corresponding options only after checking a representative output.

Reduce image data at the source
When a PDF contains images, image data is often a major contributor to its size. Ghostscript’s optimization guidance discusses reducing image resolution, changing compression, and changing color space, while warning that quality can suffer and processing is not guaranteed to make a file smaller. See the Ghostscript PDF optimization article.
- Prepare images at dimensions appropriate for their final printed or displayed size rather than embedding much larger originals.
- Choose lossy formats or stronger compression only if the resulting detail and color remain acceptable at the intended viewing size.
- Inspect photographs, fine text within images, diagrams, and gradients separately; they can respond differently to downsampling or lossy compression.
- Regenerate the PDF and compare it with the baseline before applying further changes.
Do not assume that changing Puppeteer’s scale resamples embedded images or compresses them. The option reference describes its rendering scale, not an image-optimization guarantee.
Try post-processing only after saving the source PDF
If CSS, layout, and image preparation are not enough, test a post-processor using a copy of the generated PDF. Rewriting can reduce size in some cases, but can also affect image quality, fonts, layout, links, metadata, or other document features. Check the particular outputs your workflow needs.
Ghostscript: image and PDF rewriting controls
Ghostscript’s pdfwrite can rewrite PDFs with controls for images and other content. Its guidance describes the /screen, /ebook, /printer, and /prepress presets, but these labels are not universal guarantees of a particular quality or size. Test settings against your document and intended use.
For example, a command-line workflow can write to a separate destination rather than overwrite the source:

gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook
-dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dQUIET
-sOutputFile=output-optimized.pdf input.pdf
This uses Ghostscript’s /ebook preset as a trial, not a recommended quality level for every file. Confirm the installed Ghostscript command name for your platform, retain input.pdf, and inspect the new file before using it. Consult the Ghostscript optimization guidance for the effects and trade-offs of its controls.
Avoid routinely removing embedded fonts to chase a smaller file. Font substitution on another system can change the document’s appearance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesqpdf: structural and stream recompression
qpdf can recompress streams, apply generalized decoding, recompress Flate streams at higher compression, and optionally recompress eligible images using JPEG when that reduces their size. It does not resample images, so it cannot replace preparing oversized source images at appropriate dimensions. The qpdf command-line documentation states: “While qpdf’s primary function is not to optimize the size of PDF files, there are a number of things you can do to make files smaller.” See the qpdf command-line documentation.
One documented low-risk comparison is stream recompression without image recompression:
qpdf --recompress-flate --compression-level=9 input.pdf output-qpdf.pdf
For eligible images, qpdf also documents --recompress-flate-images and --jpeg-quality. Image recompression can change visual quality, and qpdf’s documentation notes that it only uses JPEG when doing so decreases size. Review the command-line documentation for supported options in your installed version; do not assume that rewriting will shrink every file.

Measure size and verify the document still works
Record the original and resulting byte sizes, then check whether the result meets the actual upload or delivery limit. There is no general percentage reduction established for Puppeteer settings or these post-processors. Results depend on the document’s composition, selected settings, and quality trade-offs.

The PDF is almost the same size after changing Puppeteer options
That is possible: the options discussed above control layout and rendering, and Puppeteer’s documentation does not promise file-size savings from changing them. Inspect the PDF’s content, particularly image payloads, and prepare oversized images at appropriate dimensions.
The optimized PDF is larger
Rewriting is not guaranteed to produce a smaller result. Compare the output byte size with the untouched original and keep whichever file meets the size and quality requirements. Try a different approach on a fresh copy rather than repeatedly processing an already rewritten file.
Images look soft, blocky, or discolored
The compression or resolution change may be too aggressive for the content. Return to the original PDF or source images, use dimensions and quality appropriate for the intended output, and test again. Inspect both photographs and fine details such as labels and diagrams.

Text, fonts, or layout changed
Check whether the PDF was rewritten with font-related changes, whether the CSS media type changed, and whether paper-size precedence or scale was altered. Compare against the baseline and restore the original font embedding and page settings where needed.
The PDF is missing background graphics
printBackground defaults to false. Set it to true if the printed design requires backgrounds, then measure the new output and verify the page visually.
The output uses unexpected paper dimensions or fit
Review the CSS @page rule and the API’s format, width, or height settings together. With preferCSSPageSize: true, CSS page dimensions take priority; otherwise the content is scaled to fit the configured paper size.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a webpage rather than build and maintain your own Puppeteer PDF pipeline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its PDF capture supports paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges. For a screenshot, one GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, or WebP; use the PDF capture for PDF output. The API’s options and details are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
That example saves a screenshot as WebP. ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers reporting the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. This is an alternative for capturing webpages, not a replacement for a custom Puppeteer workflow when you need to generate PDFs from your own application data or control your own rendering pipeline.
