To start consumer Copilot Voice, open Copilot, select the microphone icon, allow microphone access, and speak after Copilot responds. In Microsoft 365 Copilot, choose Start a new voice chat instead. These are separate experiences, with different account requirements, controls, and capabilities.
First, identify which Copilot you’re using
“Copilot Voice” can mean a personal Copilot conversation or voice chat in Microsoft 365 Copilot. The controls are not interchangeable.

Voice chat is a two-way conversation: you speak, and Copilot responds aloud. Dictation instead turns speech into typed text. Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 voice FAQ describes the distinction and current work-feature availability.
Start a voice conversation
On the web
- Consumer Copilot: Open Copilot in a supported browser and sign in if prompted. Select the microphone icon in the message composer, allow microphone access if asked, wait for the audio greeting, then speak.
- Microsoft 365 Copilot: Open Microsoft 365 Copilot and select Start a new voice chat beside the dictation control in the compose box. Choose voice chat specifically; a microphone control may start dictation instead.
On iPhone or Android
- In the consumer Copilot app, tap the microphone control in the composer. Grant microphone permission if requested, then speak after the greeting.
- In the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, select Start a new voice chat beside Start dictation. The work feature is documented for iOS and Android, but may not have reached every account.
On Windows
In the consumer Copilot app, select the composer’s microphone icon and allow microphone access if prompted. For Microsoft 365 Copilot voice chat, you can start from the app’s voice-chat control. On supported Windows devices, the Copilot key or Win+C opens Copilot controls; Microsoft also documents a long press of the Copilot key to open the voice controller. On Mac
In the consumer Copilot app, select the microphone icon in the composer and grant microphone access if asked. Microsoft lists Mac among Microsoft 365 Copilot voice platforms, but rollout and account eligibility can affect whether the work voice-chat control appears.
Talk, interrupt, and steer the conversation
Once voice chat starts, speak naturally and follow up as you would in a conversation. For example, ask Copilot to explain a difficult idea, brainstorm options, translate or rephrase something, search the web, or rehearse a presentation. In Microsoft 365 Copilot, you can also ask about work information such as meetings or calendar details when your account, permissions, connected services, and organization’s settings allow it; work responses may use Microsoft Graph context.

- Set the shape of the answer: “Give me three options” or “Explain it in simple terms.”
- Redirect without waiting: “Stop. Compare the second and third options.”
- Ask for a manageable pace: “Ask me one question at a time.”
- Check important details: ask Copilot to repeat names, dates, or numbers, and verify them against a reliable source.
Speech recognition can mishear names, accents, technical terms, and numbers. Background noise can also affect what Copilot hears. Use shorter turns, a quieter setting, or text chat when the wording must be exact.
Mute, resume, or end voice chat
- Select the microphone control to mute; select it again to resume listening.
- Select X, Dismiss, or the equivalent close control to end the session. The label varies by product.
- In Microsoft 365 Copilot Quick View, Microsoft documents an inactivity warning after 30 seconds without activity, followed by automatic termination 30 seconds later. Background noise can affect activity detection.
- Consumer Copilot warns that some conversations may be time-limited and disconnect automatically.
Change the voice or playback speed
Consumer Copilot
- On copilot.com: Profile icon → profile name → Voice → choose a voice.
- In the Windows or macOS app: Profile icon → Settings → select the voice next to Voice.
- In the mobile app: Open the menu → profile icon → Voice Settings → choose a voice and playback speed.
Voice choices and labels can differ by platform, account, and rollout. Microsoft’s current Microsoft 365 Copilot FAQ says that experience supports one voice option, so the consumer voice picker may not appear there.

Enable “Hey Copilot” on Windows
This opt-in wake phrase is for Microsoft 365 Copilot Quick View on Windows, not a general activation command for every Copilot version.
- Open the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.
- Open Settings and more, then go to Quick View.
- Turn on Listen for “Hey Copilot.”
- Keep the PC unlocked and the Copilot app running, then say “Hey Copilot.”
The wake phrase currently works only in English, although the ensuing conversation can use supported Copilot languages. Quick View controls turn off when the desktop is locked.

What voice chat can and cannot do
Consumer Copilot Voice is suited to general questions, web research, brainstorming, and spoken follow-ups. Microsoft 365 Copilot voice chat can bring in work context where the account and permissions allow it, but voice does not provide every text-chat capability.
Microsoft’s current Microsoft 365 FAQ lists image creation, file creation, agent @-mentions, and voice chats with Copilot agents among the capabilities that are not supported in voice chat. Use voice to plan or dictate what you need, then switch to text chat or the relevant Microsoft 365 app to create or edit the output.

Why voice controls might be missing or not work
The voice-chat control is missing
- Check which account and Copilot product you opened. In Microsoft 365 Copilot, look for Start a new voice chat, not just the consumer microphone icon.
- Microsoft says Microsoft 365 voice features are rolling out gradually and currently documents them for users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Your organization may also restrict availability.
- Update or restart the app, then sign out and back in. If the control is still missing, try the web version or official mobile app.
- Use text chat or operating-system dictation as a fallback; dictation produces text rather than a spoken Copilot conversation.
Copilot does not hear you
- Check microphone access in the browser or device settings and confirm the correct input device is selected by the operating system.
- Make sure you have not muted the session inside Copilot, and check whether another application is using the microphone.
- Reduce background noise and confirm the voice session has not ended or timed out. Microsoft cautions that background speech may still be picked up despite noise suppression.
“Hey Copilot” does not activate Quick View
- Confirm that Listen for “Hey Copilot” is enabled in Quick View settings and that the Microsoft 365 Copilot app is running.
- Unlock the PC and say the phrase in English.
- Check microphone access. If the setting or control is unavailable, the feature may not be enabled for your account or installation.
Microphone access, transcripts, and privacy
Your browser or operating system may ask for microphone permission the first time you use voice. You can later revoke access in the browser or Windows, macOS, iOS, or Android privacy settings. If permission is denied, voice chat cannot hear you.
Consumer Copilot makes a text transcript available after a voice conversation and handles it like other Copilot conversation history. Microsoft 365 Copilot voice chats appear in past chats under Copilot Chat and can be resumed using text. Do not assume a voice conversation is unrecorded or absent from history.
Microsoft uses voice data to provide the voice service. Its consumer support page says users can control whether Copilot conversations are used for model training. Review the current account privacy and data controls before sharing sensitive information. In a shared space, remember that both your spoken prompts and Copilot’s spoken responses may be overheard.
Languages and availability
Microsoft describes consumer Copilot Voice as supporting a wide range of languages. Microsoft 365 voice supports languages available to Microsoft 365 Copilot, but pronunciation and language errors can vary. Check Microsoft’s current voice FAQ for current language and availability details rather than relying on a fixed list. The Windows “Hey Copilot” wake phrase is English-only.
