YouTube.com has been installable as a web app since January 2021. Installing it gives you a dedicated window and an app launcher or Dock entry; it does not download a separate native YouTube desktop program. You can install it through Chrome on supported devices, or use Safari’s built-in web-app feature on a Mac running macOS Sonoma 14 or later.
What “YouTube as a web app” means
A web app is a website that a supported browser can install and open in an app-style window. For YouTube, the service is still youtube.com, rendered with browser technology and connected to your usual YouTube account. The window is separate from your ordinary tabs, and the app can have an entry in your computer’s launcher, Start menu, taskbar, or Dock.
The change reported on January 24, 2021 was about making the main YouTube website installable through Chrome, after YouTube Music and YouTube TV had already been available as PWAs. Chrome displayed an “Install app” prompt, and the installed site opened in a dedicated window; this was a distribution and windowing change, not the launch of a new video platform. 9to5Google’s report from January 2021 covered the rollout.
Install YouTube in Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome in a normal browsing window and go to youtube.com.
- Open the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Cast, save, and share.
- Select Install page as app…, then follow the confirmation prompts.
Chrome may also show an install icon at the right of the address bar when a page offers that option. The menu is the documented route if the icon is absent. After installation, launch YouTube from your operating system’s app launcher. Chrome’s web-app help page explains installation, shortcuts, management, and removal. On supported desktop systems, Chrome also lets you manage apps at chrome://apps, create shortcuts, and configure apps to launch at sign-in.

Chrome documents its web-app feature for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers; ChromeOS also provides launcher-based web-app management. Availability and labels can still vary with the browser version, device, site state, or an organization’s policies. Install YouTube in Safari on a Mac
On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, Safari can save a webpage as a web app, so Mac users do not need to switch to Chrome just to get a Dock-launched YouTube window.

- Open YouTube in Safari.
- Choose File > Add to Dock. Depending on the Safari interface, you can also use Share > Add to Dock.
- Change the app’s name if you want, then click Add.
The web app is saved in your Applications folder and can be opened from the Dock or Spotlight. Apple says Safari web apps use a streamlined toolbar and keep browsing history, cookies, website data, and settings separate from Safari. Install a YouTube shortcut on Android
Chrome’s Android web-app flow is separate from installing the official YouTube app through Google Play:

- Choose Install and create shortcut.
- Tap Install and follow the prompts.
The wording or available choice can vary by device, Chrome version, and whether the native YouTube app is already handling links. Google documents this flow in its Android web-app help. A browser-installed shortcut is not a replacement for the native Android app’s platform integrations.
What the installed app does—and does not—add
What you gain
- A dedicated YouTube window, without the usual browser tab strip.
- An app entry you can launch or pin like other applications.
- A convenient way to keep YouTube separate from ordinary browsing while using the familiar website and account experience in the relevant browser profile.
What installation does not guarantee
- Offline video playback: installing a web app does not make all videos available offline. Chrome notes that web apps vary in offline support; a cached interface is not the same as downloaded video. YouTube download features are subject to the service’s account, platform, and subscription rules.
- Ad removal: the web app does not remove ads. Installation is not a substitute for any applicable paid YouTube plan.
- Native desktop features or better performance: it remains browser-rendered website content. Installation does not promise lower memory use, less bandwidth, or a particular speed advantage.
- Access beyond YouTube’s rules: it does not bypass account, age, geographic-availability, or copyright restrictions.
Choose the right way to use YouTube

If the full install option is unavailable, Chrome also documents a simpler website shortcut route under More > More tools > Create shortcut. It can put a link to YouTube on your device, though shortcut behavior may differ from a true installed web app. See Chrome’s shortcut instructions.

Troubleshoot a missing install option or sign-in issue
The install command or icon is missing
- Make sure you are not in an incognito or other private window, then reload YouTube.
- Update the browser and check its menu for the generic web-app installation command; the address-bar icon is not guaranteed to appear.
- Check whether YouTube is already installed, another app is handling the site, or an organization’s browser policy restricts installation.
- If the browser does not offer a web-app option, use its standard website-shortcut feature rather than downloading an unofficial “YouTube desktop app” installer.
The app does not show your account as expected
Sign-in depends on the browser profile and the site data available to it. Open YouTube in the same profile, sign in normally, and check whether cookie or site-data restrictions are blocking the session. Safari web apps have separate data from Safari, so a Safari sign-in does not necessarily carry into its web app. Removing the local installation does not delete your Google account; Chrome’s uninstall flow may offer to remove associated Chrome data. The window still has controls, or YouTube will not play offline
Some controls are normal: web-app window designs differ, and Safari may show a streamlined toolbar with navigation and sharing controls. If offline playback is the goal, installation alone is not enough; confirm that a download feature is available for your specific account and platform.
