Google’s Pixel business reached fourth place in U.S. smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2025, according to Canalys data reported by Android Central. Apple, Samsung, and Motorola ranked ahead of Google. This was a shipment milestone—not proof that Pixel has the fourth-largest installed base or is America’s fourth-most-used phone brand.
A separate Counterpoint quarterly table puts Google at approximately 5% of U.S. smartphone shipments in Q2 2025. Its later figures show 2% in Q3, 3% in Q4, and 3% in Q1 2026, making the achievement meaningful but not yet a settled new market order.
What “fourth place” actually measures
The headline refers to vendor share of phones shipped into the U.S. channel during a quarter. Counterpoint describes its market-share data as quarterly U.S. smartphone shipments; shipments can reach carriers or retailers before customers buy the devices. See its methodology and historical context at Counterpoint Research.
- Shipment share: useful for tracking manufacturer momentum, distribution, launches, and channel stocking, but not identical to consumer sell-through.
- Installed base: phones currently in use. The available data does not establish Pixel as fourth by installed base.
- Web-usage share: StatCounter measures mobile-vendor share in tracked web traffic. Its U.S. figures have placed Google around 4%–5%, but that is a different metric from shipments (current series; 2023 comparison).
- Sales share: point-of-sale or sell-through data. No sufficiently detailed sales dataset here replaces the shipment figures.
Market-share tables generally label the vendor “Google,” while the consumer-facing phone brand is Pixel. It is therefore more precise to say Google’s Pixel business unless a source names individual models.

The numbers show a spike, not a permanent takeover
| Quarter | Google’s U.S. shipment share | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 2025 | 4% | Pre-milestone level |
| Q2 2025 | 5% | Quarter associated with the fourth-place report |
| Q3 2025 | 2% | Sharp pullback |
| Q4 2025 | 3% | Partial recovery |
| Q1 2026 | 3% | Still below the Q2 peak |
These percentages come from Counterpoint’s quarterly table at this regional data page. The Canalys report establishes the Q2 ranking; Counterpoint supplies a comparable quarterly percentage series. Different firms can vary because of shipment timing, channel coverage, vendor definitions, rounding, and later revisions.
Where Pixel stood against the leaders
| Rank in the reported Q2 2025 U.S. shipment ranking | Vendor | Share available in the supplied figures |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Apple | Not stated in the cited Canalys summary |
| 2 | Samsung | Not stated in the cited Canalys summary |
| 3 | Motorola | Not stated in the cited Canalys summary |
| 4 | Google Pixel | Approximately 5% in Counterpoint’s Q2 table |
Rank alone hides the scale of the gap. Counterpoint’s U.S. series shows Apple with well over half of shipments in several recent quarters, while Samsung retains the largest Android distribution and installed-base advantages. Motorola is the immediate comparator: Counterpoint has placed it around 10%–12% across the 2025 quarters shown, substantially above Google’s 5% peak.

Why Motorola matters
Motorola’s strength comes from affordable phones, prepaid channels, and broad carrier distribution. Pixel’s fourth-place result does not mean Google overtook Motorola; it means Google briefly entered the same top-four ranking while remaining a much smaller vendor by share.
Other Android brands
OnePlus appears at roughly 1%–3% depending on the quarter in the Counterpoint table. Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Honor should not be treated as equivalent U.S. rivals because their U.S. carrier and retail presence is far narrower than in many global or Asian markets.

Why Google gained ground
A broader Pixel 9 family
Counterpoint’s regional commentary notes that Google expanded from two Pixel 8 models to four Pixel 9 models: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold (Counterpoint’s U.S. commentary). That range covers more sizes, prices, and form factors. The Pixel A-series also gives Google a lower-priced route, although the supplied sources do not assign the ranking to any single model.
Distribution and promotion
Carrier placement, trade-in credits, launch promotions, and increased retail visibility can move shipment share quickly. They are plausible contributors to the Q2 result, but the available reports do not prove that one offer or model caused it.
Camera and AI differentiation
Pixel’s camera processing and Google-branded AI provide a clear alternative to Samsung’s hardware breadth and Apple’s ecosystem. That positioning is particularly useful in the U.S. premium market, where buyers commonly finance phones through carriers and compare flagship features directly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the United States is unusually important to Pixel
Google is far stronger in the U.S. than globally. A GSMA analysis estimates roughly 1% global smartphone share versus approximately 4% in the United States (GSMA report). U.S. carrier distribution, a large premium-phone segment, and limited local availability for several Chinese brands give Pixel an opportunity that does not translate into comparable worldwide scale.

What would make the gain durable?
- Carrier placement that continues after launch promotions end.
- A complete product ladder from affordable A-series phones through flagships and foldables.
- Competitive trade-in values without relying permanently on deep discounts.
- Reliable modems, battery life, thermals, repairs, and long-term software support.
- Stronger retail and service reach to match Samsung’s footprint.
- Repeat upgrades that build an installed base rather than one-quarter shipments.
The later 2%–3% figures show that Google has not yet demonstrated this consistency. Product launches can concentrate shipments in one quarter, and promotions can pull demand forward.
What this means if you are shopping for a phone
The ranking is evidence of stronger competition, not a product-quality verdict. A Pixel may suit buyers who value Google’s camera processing, AI features, clean Android experience, or an alternative to Samsung. It may be a weaker fit for people prioritizing the broadest carrier and repair network, maximum gaming performance, fastest wired charging, or the deepest ecosystem integration.
- Compare with Samsung if you want the widest Android hardware range, accessories, service network, and mature foldable or stylus options: Samsung U.S.
- Compare with iPhone if you rely on iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Watch, Mac integration, or resale value: Apple’s U.S. store
- Compare with Motorola if price, prepaid availability, and broad carrier support matter most: Motorola U.S.
- Compare with OnePlus if charging speed and performance per dollar outweigh a smaller U.S. retail footprint: OnePlus U.S.
For current Pixel models, unlocked and carrier versions, trade-in eligibility, and A-series options, check Google’s official phone store. Trade-in values vary by model, condition, timing, and promotion; Google lists the terms at its comparison and trade-in page.
Bottom line on the fourth-place claim
Google Pixel really did reach fourth place in U.S. smartphone shipments in Q2 2025, behind Apple, Samsung, and Motorola. Counterpoint’s subsequent results—2% in Q3 2025 and 3% in both Q4 2025 and Q1 2026—show why the milestone should be described as a fragile advance. It signals healthier competition and a stronger U.S. Pixel business, not a large installed base, a Motorola takeover, or the end of Apple and Samsung’s dominance.
