An older online rumor describes it as a roughly 50-megapixel, 1/1.3-inch-class mobile sensor, but Sony has published no public datasheet, product page or launch timing to verify those claims. As of August 18, 2026, the name does not appear in Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ public product-information updates.
What is the IMX09A rumor?
The surfaced claim comes from a Reddit discussion that describes an alleged Sony IMX09A as a possible smartphone main-camera sensor with around 50 megapixels and an approximately 1/1.3-inch optical format. The post provides no Sony document, engineering sample, regulatory filing or other primary evidence. Those details are therefore rumor, not confirmed specifications.
The designation itself could be an unreleased internal identifier, a mistaken model number, a conflation with another Sony sensor, or an unfounded claim. The public evidence does not establish which explanation is correct. The discussion is also roughly 2025-era material, and it has not been substantiated by public Sony documentation since.

Has Sony announced the IMX09A?
No public announcement or product documentation confirms it. Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ product-information updates include multiple products and updates during 2026, but do not list IMX09A. This is evidence that the sensor is not publicly documented there; it cannot prove Sony has never designed, reserved or privately tested a part under that name.
A real Sony sensor announcement typically provides verifiable details such as the product designation, intended application, technical specifications or release timing. For comparison, Sony’s IMX908 announcement identifies a 4K security-camera sensor and describes its 1.45µm LOFIC pixels and 96dB HDR claim. Sony also published an IMX908-AQR1 technical flyer with further product specifications. IMX09A currently has no comparable public evidence.

What specifications are actually claimed?
| Claim | What is established |
|---|---|
| Model name: IMX09A | Unverified; it appears in the rumor discussion, not a public Sony product listing. |
| Resolution: around 50 megapixels | Rumored in the Reddit discussion; no Sony specification confirms it. |
| Optical format: approximately 1/1.3-inch | Rumored in the same discussion; no datasheet verifies it. Optical format is a naming convention, not a literal diagonal measurement. |
| Smartphone main-camera use | Speculated, not confirmed by Sony or a phone maker. |
| Xperia deployment or successor role | No evidence connects the alleged sensor to an Xperia model or identifies it as a successor to another sensor. |
| Announcement date, pixel size, HDR, autofocus, video modes, price or availability | Not established in the surfaced claim or public Sony material. |
The alleged 50MP count and 1/1.3-inch format should not be used to infer pixel size, stacked construction, readout speed, HDR method or recording modes. None of those details has been verified for IMX09A.
What Sony has confirmed for mobile sensors in 2026
Sony’s confirmed mobile-sensor announcement in the available public record is LYTIA 610, announced on June 24, 2026. Sony describes it as a 1/2-type, approximately 64-effective-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor for mobile applications, with an RB2×2 On-Chip Lens structure and support for 4K/120fps recording. Sony stated that mass-production shipments were timed for the end of June 2026.

LYTIA 610 is not evidence for or against IMX09A; it is a separate, documented product. Sony uses both IMX identifiers and LYTIA branding across its sensor lineup, and a name from one family does not establish the intended market or phone-maker customer of a product in another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What could a 50MP, 1/1.3-inch sensor mean in practice?
If the rumor’s figures were accurate, a high-resolution sensor could give a phone more image data for cropping or processing, while a 1/1.3-inch-class format could provide a larger imaging area than smaller mainstream phone sensors. Those are possibilities, not a prediction of image quality or a description of a confirmed product.

Megapixel count alone does not determine camera performance. Results would also depend on pixel design and binning, light sensitivity, read noise, full-well capacity, HDR implementation, readout speed, autofocus layout, lens quality, stabilization, image processing and the phone’s ISP. Higher resolution can also increase processing and storage demands. Without an actual specification sheet and camera implementation, there is no sound basis for comparing IMX09A performance with existing phone cameras.
Could IMX09A appear in a Sony Xperia phone?
There is no public evidence linking the alleged sensor to a specific Xperia model. Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ sensor business supplies components, while Xperia is a separate consumer-phone product line; a Sony-made sensor would not automatically be destined for a Sony phone or make Xperia its first customer. Even an eventual sensor announcement would not by itself identify a phone, launch schedule or availability to other manufacturers.
The Reddit discussion speculates that a sensor of the rumored size might replace the IMX888 in a future Sony phone. That is a forum inference, not a confirmed roadmap. No verified evidence identifies IMX09A as the successor to IMX888, IMX989, IMX890, IMX906, an Xperia-specific sensor or a LYTIA product.
What would confirm the rumor?
The strongest confirmation would be an official Sony Semiconductor Solutions product page, press release or technical flyer naming IMX09A and specifying its application and capabilities. A phone-maker or supplier document, a credible regulatory record, or a reputable teardown tying the part to a shipping device could also strengthen the case. Independent reports with matching, attributable technical details would add context. A single social-media post is not enough to establish a product or launch.
