YouTube TV’s Enhanced 1080p is a higher-bitrate 1080p stream, not 4K. The feature began rolling out in 2024; it is not a newly verified 2026 launch. It can reduce compression artifacts when a program and device support it, but availability varies by stream and platform. You do not need to buy 4K Plus solely to get better-compressed HD.
What Enhanced 1080p changes
Resolution describes the number of pixels in a picture. Bitrate describes how much video data is delivered over time, while compression reduces that data so it can be streamed. A higher bitrate can preserve more fine detail and reduce blockiness or smearing, particularly during fast motion, without increasing the picture’s resolution.
YouTube TV’s option is therefore still 1080p. Launch coverage described it as a higher-bitrate 1080p60 stream where available, which may look crisper or smoother in sports and other motion-heavy programs. Google did not publish a single bitrate that applies to every channel. Cord Cutters News’ April 2024 report described the resumed rollout and its higher-bitrate HD stream.
When YouTube TV introduced it
YouTube TV’s broader rollout was reported on February 7, 2024. Google described the feature as higher-bitrate 1080p for YouTube TV and Primetime Channels live streams, with updated 4K-compatible streaming devices identified as relevant hardware. An early bug prevented some viewers from manually selecting the mode. By April 29, 2024, coverage reported that the improved picture quality was rolling out again. See the February rollout report and the April update.

This history matters if you remember the option appearing and then disappearing: during the initial rollout, a missing manual selector was not necessarily evidence that your device was defective. The available information does not establish a separate new launch in 2026.
Enhanced 1080p, standard HD and 4K compared
| Option | What it means | Availability and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 1080p | 1080p video delivered at the service’s ordinary quality settings. | Depends on the channel, program, device and connection. |
| 1080p Enhanced | Still 1080p, but with a higher bitrate and less aggressive compression where offered. | Availability depends on the stream and device; launch coverage emphasized updated 4K-compatible hardware. A universal bitrate or complete device-by-device compatibility list is not stated. |
| YouTube TV 4K | Selected programming delivered in 4K, a higher resolution than 1080p. | Requires the 4K Plus add-on, compatible content and hardware, and an adequate connection. YouTube TV’s help page lists compatible devices and explains its requirements: 4K Plus and 4K playback. |
A 4K television does not turn an HD source into native 4K. A display may upscale the image, but that is different from receiving a 4K stream.

Why picture quality still varies by channel
Enhanced encoding cannot add detail that was never present in the source. YouTube TV’s feeds may originate in different formats: some channels use 720p, some use 1080i, and some programs are available in 1080p. A broadcaster may also upscale older or lower-resolution material before sending it. A higher-bitrate stream can reduce compression damage, but it cannot make a 720p source native 1080p or restore detail lost upstream. The February 2024 coverage noted these source-format differences: 9to5Google.
That is why one live event may offer an enhanced option while another channel does not. It also explains why a channel can still look soft even when the playback setting says 1080p.

Devices: supported for YouTube TV is not the same as confirmed for Enhanced 1080p
YouTube TV supports a broad range of televisions, streaming players and consoles, including Apple TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV devices, Fire TV, Roku, Android TV, selected Samsung, LG, Vizio and Hisense TVs, PlayStation and Xbox. Its supported-device guidance describes the broader app ecosystem.
That list does not confirm that every model can decode or expose Enhanced 1080p. Launch coverage emphasized updated 4K-capable devices, and codec support, hardware generation, operating-system and app versions can matter. YouTube TV’s 4K device list includes examples such as Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, 4K Roku devices, Apple TV 4K, selected Fire TV 4K devices, PS4 Pro and Nvidia Shield for 4K playback; this should not be treated as a definitive Enhanced 1080p compatibility list.

How to look for Enhanced 1080p
- Start a live program in the YouTube TV app.
- Open the playback controls, then the settings or video-quality control. The exact labels and path can differ by device.
- Look for 1080p Enhanced, 1080p60 Enhanced or similar wording, and select it if you want to test it manually.
- Try another channel or program if the option is absent; availability is not universal.
If the selector is missing, the program may not offer an enhanced stream, the device or app may not qualify, or the quality may be selected automatically. YouTube TV’s February 2024 rollout also had a bug that affected manual selection, as reported at the time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether it makes a difference
Compare the same channel and program on the same device, leaving the TV’s picture mode unchanged. Sports, scrolling text, grass, crowds and fine patterns can reveal compression artifacts more clearly than a static frame. Judge motion as well as paused images, and compare Enhanced 1080p with ordinary 1080p—not with native 4K. Testing more than one channel helps separate a stream-quality difference from a source-feed limitation.

YouTube TV’s 4K help page refers to Stats for Nerds for checking delivered quality, but the documentation does not establish that this diagnostic always identifies Enhanced 1080p with a clear label. Do not treat the absence of such an indicator as a definitive test. YouTube TV’s 4K help page
Bandwidth and playback problems
YouTube TV’s general connection guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for one HD stream and 13 Mbps for reliable HD when other devices are also using the connection. It recommends 25 Mbps for available 4K quality; under 3 Mbps, playback may load slowly or rebuffer. These are general service guidance figures, not a published Enhanced 1080p minimum. A higher-bitrate HD stream may be more sensitive to congestion, but YouTube TV has not stated a universal bandwidth target for it. See YouTube TV’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
- The option is missing: Update the app and device software, then test a different program. Content eligibility, device support, automatic quality selection or a service-side issue may explain it.
- The picture still looks poor: Check whether the channel’s source is 720p or 1080i, whether the network is congested, and whether the TV’s processing is affecting the image. Higher bitrate cannot repair a poor original feed.
- Watching on a computer with an external display: YouTube TV says content-protection handling can sometimes lower playback quality; its troubleshooting page also discusses allowing device identity verification for enhanced playback of protected media. Consult the playback guidance.
- Using Apple TV: YouTube TV notes that blank screens or flicker can occur under some app conditions and suggests testing SDR and dynamic-range settings. This is a general Apple TV playback issue, not evidence of an Enhanced 1080p-specific fault. See YouTube TV’s device guidance.
Do you need 4K Plus or a new streaming device?
Enhanced 1080p and 4K Plus are separate concepts. Launch coverage positioned the enhanced HD mode outside 4K Plus; the available information does not establish 4K Plus as a universal requirement for Enhanced 1080p. The add-on is for YouTube TV’s selected 4K programming and also includes unlimited in-home streams and offline viewing of eligible DVR recordings on mobile devices. It does not make every channel 4K. Details and current account-specific pricing are in YouTube TV’s 4K Plus help page; the service directs subscribers to Settings → Membership in the app for pricing.
Likewise, YouTube TV’s broad device support does not mean you should replace a working streamer to chase Enhanced 1080p. Consider new hardware only if your current device lacks the needed capability or has playback problems, and confirm the specific model’s compatibility before buying. No device is established as a guarantee that every program will expose the enhanced stream.
