South Korea follows at 767 Mbps and the United States at 404 Mbps. These are not guaranteed customer speeds, coverage measurements, or a ranking of every connection marketed as 5G.
Which Ookla data is this? Ookla publishes several products. This article uses the 2026 report for standalone-5G results and treats the Speedtest Global Index separately for its June 2026 overall-mobile snapshot. The two datasets have different network scopes and measurement periods, so they should not be merged into one leaderboard.
What the latest 5G standalone report measures
The Ookla–Omdia report analyzes Speedtest Intelligence data for Q4 2025. Its headline country figures are median download speeds on tests identified as using 5G standalone (5G SA), rather than all mobile tests or every connection displaying a 5G icon. The report is available at Ookla–Omdia 5G SA and 5G Advanced 2026 Report.
5G SA country results
| Market | Median 5G SA download speed |
|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | 1.24 Gbps |
| South Korea | 767 Mbps |
| Kuwait | 495 Mbps |
| Greece | 489 Mbps |
| Singapore | 462 Mbps |
| United States | 404 Mbps |
| Brazil | 374 Mbps |
A median is the midpoint of measured tests: half were faster and half slower. It is not an average, a peak, a minimum, or a promise that subscribers throughout a country can obtain the listed speed.

How the June 2026 Global Index differs
The monthly Speedtest Global Index reports broader overall mobile performance, not a pure 5G-SA comparison. Its June 2026 snapshot lists these median mobile download speeds:
| Market | Overall mobile median download speed, June 2026 |
|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | 760.93 Mbps |
| Qatar | 626.44 Mbps |
| Kuwait | 427.77 Mbps |
| South Korea | 373.23 Mbps |
| Brunei | 335.28 Mbps |
| Bahrain | 325.44 Mbps |
| Brazil | 313.39 Mbps |
| Saudi Arabia | 302.86 Mbps |
| United States | 291.36 Mbps |
| Bulgaria | 289.54 Mbps |
The Global Index page is a reproduced snapshot rather than an Ookla-owned domain, so use it as a discovery reference and check Ookla’s own reporting when making formal comparisons. The different rankings are expected: one filters for 5G SA and uses Q4 2025 data; the other covers a wider mobile mix in June 2026.
What 5G SA means
Non-standalone 5G
5G NSA commonly uses a 4G LTE core or 4G anchor. A phone can show 5G while still relying on that underlying 4G architecture.

Standalone 5G
5G SA uses a 5G core. It is designed to support capabilities such as lower-latency services, network slicing and more flexible enterprise applications. A 5G icon alone does not prove that a handset is on SA; the device, plan, bands, location and carrier configuration all have to align.
5G Advanced
5G Advanced is a later evolution that adds enhanced radio performance and automation features. Commercial availability and supported features vary by operator and market.
Why the UAE and other leading markets rank highly
The report associates strong results with substantial mid-band spectrum, dense deployments, operator investment, commercial 5G SA launches and newer 5G Advanced networks. It specifically links Kuwait’s position to commercial 5G Advanced launches by Ooredoo, Zain and stc, and discusses Greece alongside broad 3.5-GHz allocation and operator investment. These are explanations presented by the report, not proof that one factor alone caused each country’s result.

Dense urban deployment, high-capacity backhaul, newer devices and the distribution of Speedtest users can also raise a national median. The available figures do not establish uniform performance in rural areas, inside buildings or across every operator.
What the U.S. results do—and do not—say
The United States is sixth in the cited 5G SA comparison at 404 Mbps and ninth in the June 2026 overall-mobile snapshot at 291.36 Mbps. Those are national medians, not a verdict on every American carrier or city. Choosing service requires local operator performance, supported bands, congestion, plan priority and coverage at the places you use your phone.

Download speed answers how quickly data arrived in the tested session. Other measures answer different questions:
Rank #4
- Unlocked, portable hot spot for 5G and 4G LTE around the world, certified with AT&T requires a 5G compatible SIM card. Ask your 5G wireless network provider for the best 5G data plan for your needs
- Upload speed: important for sending photos, video and backups.
- Latency: the round-trip delay, usually measured in milliseconds; it matters for gaming, calls and interactive apps.
- Consistency: how often tests clear a usable threshold. A GSMA analysis using Ookla data used 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload thresholds for a cited 2025 5G-consistency measure; its speed figures used median tests from January–October 2025. See GSMA’s Spectrum Pricing and Renewals in Europe.
- Availability or time connected: how often users encounter or remain on 5G, not how fast the connection is once established.
- Geographic reach: whether service works at home, indoors, on highways and in remote areas. OECD analysis documents metropolitan and remote-region differences in Ookla-based connectivity data; see OECD, Closing Broadband Connectivity Divides for All.
A market can therefore combine exceptional speeds in dense districts with weaker rural reach or limited SA availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why your Speedtest may not match the report
A Speedtest result is a user-initiated observation, not a laboratory specification or carrier guarantee. Results change with the modem and bands in your phone, signal and interference, indoor materials, cell congestion, backhaul, server route, VPN, dual-SIM settings, plan prioritization and whether the test uses NSA or SA. Cellular and Wi-Fi tests are not interchangeable.
Median country data also reflects where people tested and which devices they used. It is not a census of every subscriber. A flagship phone outdoors near a lightly loaded cell can produce a very different result from an older handset indoors during the evening.

How to test your own 5G connection fairly
- Turn off Wi-Fi and confirm that the phone is using cellular data.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or other traffic-routing software.
- Test where and when performance matters, recording download, upload, latency, network indicator, device and location.
- Run at least three tests several minutes apart.
- Repeat during a busy period and a quieter period.
- If indoor service is the issue, repeat near a window or outdoors.
- Compare repeated results with the carrier’s coverage map and independent local measurements.
- Treat unusually high or low single results as observations, not your normal speed.
Phone diagnostics do not expose a definitive SA label on every handset or carrier, so the visible 5G indicator is not conclusive.
How to use the rankings for a real decision
- Use the 5G SA table to understand the performance reported for deployed standalone networks.
- Use the monthly Global Index to track broader mobile conditions over time.
- For a carrier choice, seek operator- or city-level evidence rather than relying on a country position.
- Check device-band compatibility, plan data limits, hotspot rules, prioritization and roaming.
- For 5G home internet, compare evening congestion, latency and upload behavior with wired broadband, not just the phone-speed headline.
The Bottom Line
Ookla’s latest cited 5G-SA comparison puts the UAE first at a 1.24-Gbps median for Q4 2025, while the United States records 404 Mbps. The figures show measured performance on qualifying tests—not universal coverage, guaranteed speeds or a substitute for repeated local checks.
