The original Nokia 8 is a genuine 2017 HMD Global flagship, not a generic name for every Nokia 8-series phone. Its Snapdragon 835, sharp 5.3-inch QHD LCD, aluminum body, headphone jack and microSD slot still handle calls, media and light apps well. In 2026, however, it is a 4G-only legacy device with an aging battery, old Android software and uncertain app and carrier support. Buy one only at a very low price, after checking the exact model, LTE bands, battery and return policy.

What the Nokia 8 was in 2017
HMD Global announced the Nokia 8 as its first Nokia-branded Android flagship during the company’s return to smartphones. Its approximately €599 European launch price put it against the OnePlus 5, HTC U11, LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Google Pixel-class phones. The appeal was a solid aluminum design, relatively lightly customized Android, ZEISS-branded optics and a feature Nokia called “Bothie,” which records from the front and rear cameras at the same time. Rollout began in September 2017.

Design and display
The aluminum unibody still feels more substantial than many inexpensive plastic phones. At about 7.9 mm thick, the Nokia 8 is also compact beside today’s 6.5-inch-plus devices, and its 16:9 shape is comfortable for one-handed use. The trade-off is a dated appearance: thick bezels, no high-refresh-rate panel and less efficient use of modern widescreen video.
Its 5.3-inch, 2,560 × 1,440 IPS LCD produces crisp text and photographs. Contemporary testing praised brightness and outdoor readability; TechRadar reported a claimed brightness of about 700 nits (review). LCD blacks and contrast cannot match OLED, and a nine-year-old panel may have yellowing, uneven backlighting, dead pixels or touch dead zones. The phone was not fully waterproof, so never treat a used example as safe for submersion.
Performance in 2026
Snapdragon 835 was flagship hardware in 2017. Today it remains adequate for phone calls, messaging, music, ordinary video, email, light browsing, navigation when compatible and older games. It is not competitive for demanding new games, sustained multitasking, AI features or long-term app compatibility.

That distinction matters: the Nokia 8 can still feel responsive during basic use, but it is not a modern performance phone. Limited RAM on 4 GB models and aging flash storage can make app switching and updates progressively less pleasant.
Cameras: capable in daylight, dated after dark
The rear system combines two 13-megapixel cameras—one color and one monochrome—with ZEISS branding. It records rear-camera video up to 4K, while the 13-megapixel front camera supports the Bothie split-screen concept. In good daylight, images can still be serviceable for messages and social posts.
Low-light output is the major weakness. Contemporary Gadgets 360 coverage described the cameras as decent but specifically criticized night performance. Autofocus, HDR consistency, stabilization and computational processing are far behind newer budget phones. ZEISS branding identifies the optics partnership; it does not make this a 2026-level camera.

Software and update reality
The Nokia 8 shipped with Android 7.1.1 Nougat and received later Android releases, including Oreo and Pie-era updates reported during its supported life. It should not be presented as a current Android phone, and the original Nokia 8 was not the Android One model that the Nokia 8 Sirocco became.
Nokia’s current support site offers general phone help, but no current Nokia 8-specific security schedule is established (Nokia support). Before buying, inspect the actual handset rather than trusting “updated” in a listing:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then About phone.
- Record Android version and Android security update.
- Open System update (sometimes under System > System update) and check manually.
Labels vary by installed version and region. Old Android can prevent banking, enterprise, streaming or identity applications from installing, or can lose support after installation. Do not use this phone as your only device for banking, password management or work authentication.

Battery, charging and everyday hardware
The original capacity was 3,090 mAh. Capacity figures from 2017 do not predict endurance from a used unit: battery health, LTE reception, brightness and background applications matter more. A phone that drops abruptly from 30% to 10%, becomes hot during ordinary work or shuts down under load probably needs service.
USB-C and the headphone jack remain useful, as do the front fingerprint reader and microSD slot. Years of plugging can loosen the USB-C port, while replacement batteries and repair parts may be inconsistent. If a battery or screen repair consumes much of the purchase price, the bargain disappears.

The Nokia 8 has LTE but no 5G. “Unlocked” on a marketplace listing means only that particular seller’s phone is not SIM-locked; it does not guarantee operation on every network. Exact TA-series model, single- or dual-SIM configuration, LTE bands and VoLTE provisioning all matter, especially in the United States.

Nokia 8 versus other “Nokia 8” phones
| Model | What it is | Important difference |
|---|---|---|
| Nokia 8 | Original 2017 flagship | Snapdragon 835, 5.3-inch LCD, microSD and headphone jack |
| Nokia 8 Sirocco | 2018 premium redesign | Curved 5.5-inch P-OLED, 6 GB/128 GB, Android One positioning and no microSD |
| Nokia 8.1 | Later upper-midrange phone | Different chipset and design, not the original flagship successor |
| Nokia 8.3 5G | 2020 large 5G phone | Much newer, larger display and 5G connectivity |
| Nokia 8 V 5G UW | Verizon-oriented 5G model | Different device with carrier-specific hardware |
The Sirocco’s distinct hardware and software positioning are documented by TechRadar, Android Authority and Tech Advisor. Marketplace titles often omit these distinctions, so verify the model number and photographs.
Buying a Nokia 8 used in 2026
Two observed marketplace listings were around US$67.67–68 for seller-described unlocked phones, but those are dated, seller-specific examples—not a universal market price. Shipping, taxes, import fees, condition, storage, SIM setup, returns and battery health can matter more than the headline number (listing example; another listing).
Before paying
- Confirm the listing is the original Nokia 8, not Sirocco, 8.1, 8.3 5G or 8 V 5G UW.
- Request the model number, RAM/storage, Android version, SIM configuration and IMEI.
- Ask whether the battery was replaced and what part was used.
- Confirm unlocked status, LTE/VoLTE compatibility and a meaningful return period.
- Check charger regional suitability and inspect clear photos for dents, camera-glass scratches and frame separation.
When it arrives
- Compare the IMEI in Settings and the dialer where available; verify it is not blacklisted.
- Test calls, SMS, LTE data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC.
- Test both SIM slots on dual-SIM versions, plus fingerprint reader, cameras, microphone, speakers, headphone jack, USB-C and microSD.
- Check every part of the touchscreen for dead zones, pixels, burn-in and uneven lighting.
- Install required applications and check the security-patch date before the return period closes.
Who should—and should not—buy it?
It can make sense when
- You need an inexpensive backup, travel, media or navigation phone.
- You value a compact QHD display, aluminum construction, headphone jack and expandable storage.
- The exact LTE variant works on your network and the seller accepts returns.
- You accept old software and basic rather than demanding performance.
Choose something newer when
- You need current security updates, banking or work-authentication reliability.
- You expect dependable battery life, 5G, modern cameras or high-refresh scrolling.
- The listing cannot document model number, IMEI, battery condition or network compatibility.
- The total cost approaches that of a newer refurbished 4G or 5G phone.
Alternatives to consider
A current unlocked Android phone or professionally refurbished 5G model is the safer long-term choice, but no specific alternative price or model is established here. The Nokia 8 Sirocco offers a more premium design and P-OLED panel, yet it is also old, lacks microSD expansion and should not be treated as a modern-support phone. The Nokia 8.3 5G and Nokia 8 V 5G UW are newer Nokia-branded 5G devices, but carrier compatibility still needs verification.

Verdict
The Nokia 8 remains a pleasant compact handset for calls, media and light apps when bought very cheaply. Its Snapdragon 835 and aluminum body have aged better than its software, battery and camera processing. In 2026, buy only after confirming the exact model, LTE/VoLTE compatibility, IMEI, battery condition and return protection—and avoid making it your secure primary phone.
