1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe dependable, officially supported way to keep YouTube playing when your phone is locked or its display is off is a YouTube Premium membership. YouTube Premium covers ordinary YouTube videos and includes YouTube Music Premium. YouTube Music Premium is the narrower, music-focused choice. Without a subscription, background playback for most videos is not an officially guaranteed feature; browser workarounds can change or stop working.
The official method: use the YouTube app with Premium
YouTube says background play works in the YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids mobile apps when you are signed in to an account with an active Premium membership. Start a video, then lock the phone, turn off the display, or open another app. Playback controls remain available from the lock screen, notifications, Control Center or your device’s media controls.
Set it up in the YouTube app:
- Open YouTube and sign in to the Google account that has Premium.
- Start the video you want to hear.
- Lock the phone or switch to another app.
- If playback stops, open Profile picture → Settings → Background play under Background & downloads.
- Select Always on. You can instead choose Off, or Headphones or external speakers to allow background play only when an external audio output is connected.
Background play is not available in the Shorts player. Picture-in-picture is different: it keeps a small video window visible, while background play continues audio after the screen is locked or another app is opened.

iPhone and iPad instructions
Install or update YouTube or YouTube Music, sign in to the account with Premium, start playback, and press the side or top button to lock the device. Use the lock-screen media controls to pause, resume or skip.
If you purchased Premium through Apple billing, YouTube says you must be signed in to the same YouTube account used for that purchase. Check the account and membership at YouTube → Profile picture → Paid memberships. The account-verification guidance is documented at YouTube’s membership troubleshooting page.
YouTube’s mobile-browser documentation also ties background playback to Premium; it does not establish a universal free Safari or other browser method. See YouTube’s mobile-browser help.

Menu names differ among Pixel, Samsung and other Android versions.

Listening with YouTube Music
YouTube Music Premium is designed for songs, albums, playlists, remixes, covers, DJ sets and music videos. Its listed benefits include background playback, ad-free on-demand music, downloads and an audio-only mode that avoids loading video where supported. Podcast advertising or creator-inserted promotions can still occur; “ad-free” does not remove every sponsorship or promotion.
Use the regular YouTube app for lectures, interviews, tutorials, documentaries, livestreams and other videos outside a music-focused catalog. Full YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, so it is the broader choice when you want both services.

YouTube Music says most podcasts support background play regardless of membership status, and podcast downloads are generally available without membership. Regional and episode-specific restrictions apply, and some episodes do not support audio-only downloads. This exception does not make all YouTube music or video playback free in the background.

Bluetooth, headphones and casting
With Bluetooth earbuds, a car receiver or a speaker, the phone normally remains the playback source; supported Premium playback should continue when the phone is locked. If Background play is set to Headphones or external speakers, a connected audio device is required.
With YouTube Music and a Chromecast Audio or Google Cast-connected speaker, the receiving device handles playback after casting begins. YouTube says music can continue after you leave Chrome, close the web app or turn off the computer. Details are at YouTube Music’s casting help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you do it without Premium?
For most ordinary YouTube videos, no stable, officially supported free method is documented. YouTube’s browser instructions cover Premium users at m.youtube.com. Requests for a desktop site, restarting playback from a lock screen or similar tricks may work temporarily in a particular browser and operating-system version, but they are unofficial and liable to stop working.

Two documented qualifications matter:
- Podcasts: most YouTube Music podcasts can play in the background without membership, subject to regional and content restrictions.
- Premium Lite: YouTube announced in March 2026 that background play and downloads were expanding for most videos in supported regions, but Shorts and music content were excluded. Exclusions include official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs and some user-generated videos containing music-partner material. Check YouTube’s announcement and the Premium Lite page for current regional availability.

Fix playback that stops when the screen locks
- Confirm that YouTube is signed in to the account with the active membership.
- Open Profile picture → Paid memberships and check that the membership has not expired.
- Open Settings → Background play and select Always on.
- Update YouTube or YouTube Music, then force-close and reopen it.
- Restart the phone.
- Allow YouTube to use background data. On Android, remove an overly restrictive battery setting; on iPhone, ensure notifications and media controls are permitted.
- Pause or close another app that may have taken control of the audio session.
- Test a standard video rather than a Short.
- Try another network if connectivity is unstable.
If downloaded content fails, sign in again with the account that created the download, confirm the membership is active, connect the app to the internet, and check that the item has not been removed or become unavailable. Do not assume one fixed offline-validity period: rules vary by service and region.
When app playback works but browser playback does not, use the official app first. Browser behavior can differ by browser, device and account state even though YouTube documents Premium browser background play.
Alternatives when you only need music
Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and similar services offer conventional music libraries with dependable screen-off playback, but they cannot play arbitrary YouTube videos. A local player is also predictable and subscription-free when you already own legally obtained audio files; it does not provide access to YouTube’s catalog or justify extracting copyrighted audio from YouTube.
The Bottom Line
For reliable screen-off playback of YouTube videos, choose YouTube Premium. Choose YouTube Music Premium if your listening is mainly music and podcasts, and consider Premium Lite only when music is not part of the requirement.
