It is common on car-navigation and GPS screens, remote-controlled interfaces, and some accessibility keyboards. ABCDE is a descriptive label, not one globally standardized layout, so the exact rows, key sizes, punctuation, and controls depend on the device or software.
What an ABCDE keyboard layout means
On an ABCDE keyboard, the alphabet is arranged predictably from A through Z. A representative arrangement might look like this:

This diagram is illustrative, not a universal specification. A manufacturer may use several rows, a grid, pages that scroll, or large touch targets. The same screen can also include space, backspace, shift, numbers, punctuation, navigation arrows, search, and confirmation controls.
The name distinguishes the arrangement from:
- QWERTY, whose first letter row begins Q-W-E-R-T-Y.
- AZERTY, used in many French-language environments.
- QWERTZ, used in several German-language environments.
Do not confuse an alphabetical keyboard with a five-key control scheme in which the keys A, B, C, D, and E trigger commands. Those are unrelated uses of the same letters.

Is ABCDE a formal keyboard standard?
Generally, no. ABCDE is best understood as a product or interface label. Different manufacturers use it for their own alphabetical implementations rather than following one universal geometry or operating-system standard.
For example, Garmin documents ABCDE as an alphabetical alternative to QWERTY on supported devices (Garmin support). Honda navigation manuals list QWERTY as the factory default and ABCDE as an alternative (2023 Ridgeline manual; 2022 CR-V manual). Clevy implements ABCDE as a selectable mode in a physical keyboard (Clevy Keyboard 3 manual). These examples establish the term’s meaning while also showing that implementations vary.
Where you will find ABCDE layouts
Car infotainment and navigation
Vehicle systems use on-screen keyboards for street names, cities, points of interest, contacts, and destinations. An alphabetical layout can be easier to search visually when the driver or passenger is selecting letters with a touchscreen, knob, or cursor rather than touch-typing.

GPS and aviation devices
Garmin’s aera 760 pilot guide provides a model-specific example: Main Menu → Tools → Setup → Keyboard, then choose ABCDE or QWERTY under Keyboard Format. It also offers a preview (Garmin aera 760 guide). Other Garmin models can use different labels or paths.
Accessibility keyboards
Alphabetical ordering can support predictable scanning, larger targets, or simplified visual search. Clevy Keyboard 3 supports QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ, and ABCDE modes. Its documentation limits the feature to supported Latin-based layouts and excludes Cyrillic layouts, so language support must be checked rather than assumed.
Remote and embedded interfaces
Televisions, streaming boxes, kiosks, switch-scanning systems, and other limited-input devices may use alphabetical grids because users select one character at a time with a directional pad, joystick, switch, or cursor.

ABCDE versus QWERTY

There is no evidence in the cited documentation that ABCDE is universally faster, more ergonomic, or safer than QWERTY. For a trained typist entering long messages, QWERTY usually avoids relearning. For occasional destination entry or a user who does not know QWERTY, alphabetical ordering may improve discoverability. In accessibility use, accuracy, fatigue, target acquisition, and independence can matter more than words per minute.
QWERTY’s continued dominance reflects historical adoption, training, hardware and software compatibility, and shared conventions. It is not necessary to claim that it was created simply to slow typists.
How to switch to or from ABCDE
Garmin automotive devices
- Open Tools.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Keyboard or Keyboard Layout.
- Choose QWERTY or the available alphabetical option, then select OK.
That path is representative of Garmin support documentation; menu names and availability vary by model and software version (Garmin instructions).

Garmin aera 760
Use Main Menu → Tools → Setup → Keyboard, select ABCDE or QWERTY under Keyboard Format, and use Preview if needed (aera 760 guide).
Honda navigation systems
Open the navigation system’s language and keyboard settings, then select Keyboard Layout. The cited Ridgeline and CR-V manuals identify QWERTY as the default and ABCDE as the alternative. The exact screen sequence differs by model year and system version, so use the manual for the vehicle’s specific trim.
Clevy Keyboard 3
Hold Alt + AltGr + Q for five seconds to toggle the layout. The shortcut uses the physical key position immediately to the right of Tab, regardless of the letter printed on that key. Five blue LED flashes indicate the changed layout; five white flashes indicate the standard layout. The keyboard changes its internal mapping, so the operating system’s keyboard setting does not need to change. To restore factory settings, hold Alt + AltGr + R (Clevy manual).

If the printed keycaps are to match the new output, they must be rearranged manually. The firmware mapping and the labels on the caps are separate.

Not necessarily. There are three different scopes:
- Application-level: only one search screen or app changes, as with many vehicle and GPS interfaces.
- Device-level: embedded firmware or a keyboard changes how its own keys produce characters.
- Operating-system-level: a computer or phone input method changes globally.
Selecting ABCDE in a car or GPS normally does not alter the keyboard on your phone or computer. A hardware mode such as Clevy’s operates inside the keyboard itself. A global remap, by contrast, can affect every application, including shortcuts, password fields, games, command-line tools, and support instructions.
Common problems and fixes
The screen did not change
- The setting may apply only while entering a destination or search term.
- You may have changed one app’s layout while viewing another.
- The device may require confirmation or a restart.
- A separate language or input setting may control the keyboard.
Printed letters no longer match
On a remappable physical keyboard, internal output can change while keycaps remain in their original positions. Rearrange the caps only if the manufacturer permits it and you need printed labels to correspond.
Shortcuts behave unexpectedly
After any global remap, test ordinary letters, Shift, Caps Lock, Backspace, Enter, copy and paste, password fields, and the shortcut used to switch back. Keep the original layout available for troubleshooting.

ABCDE may be built into the manufacturer’s interface and cannot be added through a normal language setting. Alternatives include a custom on-screen keyboard, accessibility software, a remapping utility, a dedicated alphabetical keyboard, or voice input. Verify support for the required language or script first.
Which layout should you choose?
- Choose ABCDE when you enter short strings occasionally, use a remote or cursor, or benefit from alphabetical scanning and larger, predictable targets.
- Choose QWERTY when you already touch-type, enter substantial text, share equipment, or need broad compatibility and familiar shortcuts.
- Consider AZERTY or QWERTZ when your language, workplace, or local hardware standard requires them.
- Consider Dvorak or Colemak only if you specifically want an alternative optimized layout and accept the training and compatibility costs; neither is alphabetical.
- Consider voice input for short searches or destinations when language support, privacy, noise, and recognition accuracy are acceptable.
ABCDE is therefore an interface choice suited to particular tasks, not a universal replacement for QWERTY.
