Best Budget Headphones in 2022: Wireless, ANC, Wired and Gaming Picks

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a historical buying guide to headphones that were available in the United States during calendar year 2022. It uses 2022 price bands and product generations, not today’s retail list. A model can be an excellent 2022 pick yet be discontinued, overpriced as old stock, or replaced now.

For most buyers who wanted wireless over-ear headphones with noise cancelling, the Anker Soundcore Life Q30 was the strongest all-round choice. The JBL Tune 510BT was the better low-cost portable option, while Philips SHP9500/SHP9600 and Koss models delivered better sound per dollar for quiet-room wired listening.

Quick comparison: the strongest 2022 budget picks

“Budget” covered several very different products in 2022. The table uses typical U.S. pricing bands from that period rather than current prices; exact street prices changed with sales and stock.

Model Design Connection ANC Typical 2022 price band Best for Main drawback Availability now
Anker Soundcore Life Q30 Closed over-ear Bluetooth, wired fallback Yes Usually under $80 on sale Best overall, travel and office Bass-heavy tuning, average microphone and plastic build Still commonly listed, but verify generation and seller
JBL Tune 510BT On-ear Bluetooth No $49.95 MSRP; often about $30 on sale Cheapest useful wireless and portability On-ear pressure and weak isolation Often available as remaining or refurbished stock
Sony WH-CH510 On-ear Bluetooth No Under $50 in many 2022 listings Lightweight basic wireless listening No 3.5mm input and no ANC Check stock carefully
Philips SHP9500/SHP9600 Open-back over-ear Wired No Often under $100, depending on sale Home listening and gaming in quiet rooms Leaks sound and has little sub-bass May be marketplace or remaining stock
Koss KSC75 or Porta Pro Clip-on or portable on-ear Wired No Entry-level pricing Maximum sound per dollar Minimal isolation and unconventional fit Usually available through Koss and retailers
Audio-Technica ATH-M20x Closed over-ear Wired No Entry-level studio pricing Basic monitoring and isolation Less portable and comfortable than consumer wireless models Generally available

Best overall budget wireless over-ear: Anker Soundcore Life Q30

The Life Q30 offered the most complete feature set for a sub-$100 2022 headset: active noise cancellation, app-based equalization, Bluetooth multipoint, long battery life, and a comfortable over-ear fit. That combination made it the safest recommendation for commuting, travel, home working and general listening.

Current RTINGS testing reports roughly 44 hours of battery life, effective reduction of low-frequency engine rumble and background noise, multipoint pairing and a comfortable fit. Those later measurements support its value, but they do not by themselves prove it was the number-one model in every 2022 test. The retrospective verdict is about its unusually strong feature-to-price balance.

Its default sound is bass-forward, with extra rumble that suits pop, hip-hop, electronic music and films. The Soundcore app provides presets and manual EQ, so vocals and acoustic material can be brought closer to a neutral balance. Equalization cannot repair a poor seal, distortion or hardware limitations.

ANC is most useful against airplane and bus engines, heating and air-conditioning systems, and other low-frequency hum. It is less reliable against nearby conversation, sudden noises and high-frequency traffic. Glasses, hair and shallow pad contact can weaken both isolation and bass.

  • Choose it when: you want one wireless headset for travel, office use and home listening.
  • Skip it when: you need highly accurate out-of-box tuning, a premium-feeling frame or especially clear outdoor calls. RTINGS notes that voices through its microphone can sound thin or dark even though background-noise handling is reasonable.

Best cheap portable wireless: JBL Tune 510BT

The Tune 510BT was a strong under-$50 choice. SoundGuys lists a $49.95 MSRP and displayed a $29.95 sale price in its page snapshot; neither figure should be treated as a current September 2026 quote. Independent testing measured about 40 hours and 43 minutes of battery life, and five minutes of charging supplied about two hours of playback. It also supports Bluetooth multipoint and uses USB-C.

  • Packaging Component: Package include a Foldable Deep Bass Headphone, 3.5MM Audio Cable, Type-c Charging Cable and User Manual.

The folding on-ear design is considerably smaller than the Q30 and convenient for a bag. Its tuning emphasizes bass, which is lively for popular music but can obscure vocals or acoustic detail. There is no ANC, and on-ear pads provide less passive isolation than sealed over-ear cups.

Because the pads press on the ears, comfort depends strongly on head shape, glasses, earrings and clamp sensitivity. SoundGuys describes its microphone as good for the category, but outdoor wind and busy streets remain difficult for any inexpensive Bluetooth microphone.

Best lightweight Sony option available in 2022: Sony WH-CH510

The WH-CH510 appealed to buyers who wanted a very light, simple wireless headset. TechRadar describes approximately 35 hours of claimed battery life, USB-C charging and a lightweight build. It was suitable for podcasts, casual music and calls when low weight mattered more than isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important compromise is connectivity: the CH510 has no analog 3.5mm input. If you regularly use airplane entertainment systems, a desktop without reliable Bluetooth, or a device that needs a cable, choose a model with wired support instead. It also lacks ANC and uses an on-ear fit.

Do not confuse it with the Sony WH-CH520. Sony’s later CH520 launched in April 2023, so it cannot be counted as a 2022 recommendation. TechRadar’s model chronology documents that distinction at its Sony headphone guide.

Best wired home-listening value: Philips SHP9500 or SHP9600

These open-back headphones were compelling when sound quality mattered more than privacy or portability. Their open earcups create a spacious presentation, with clear mids, vocals and instruments that are difficult to match with many inexpensive Bluetooth models.

The same design makes them unsuitable for commuting, libraries, shared offices, airplanes or recording with a live microphone: sound leaks out and outside noise comes in. RTINGS specifically warns about this leakage in its budget-headphone coverage. Bass below the midrange is also lighter than on bass-boosted wireless models.

They are comfortable for long sessions for many users, but fit and pad condition still matter. Check authorized retailers before paying inflated marketplace prices because official current stock and pricing are not established here.

Best ultra-cheap wired sound: Koss KSC75 or Porta Pro

Koss’s KSC75 and Porta Pro remain famous for delivering unusually engaging sound at very low prices. The KSC75 uses ear clips; the Porta Pro uses a lightweight headband. Both are easy to drive from phones, laptops and portable players, and neither needs charging or Bluetooth pairing.

The trade-off is practical: isolation is minimal, leakage is noticeable, and the fit is not conventional. Cable and hinge parts can feel less substantial than those on larger headphones. Pick one when sound-per-dollar is the priority, not when you need a sealed travel headset, a modern call system or rugged daily portability.

  • CLEAR CONVERSATIONS - Bluetooth headset with built-in microphone has clear voice effect, compatible with smartphones for hands-free calling and use with voice assistants. [Note: Microphone works in wireless/Bluetooth mode only].

Best for basic monitoring: Audio-Technica ATH-M20x

The ATH-M20x was a sensible closed-back wired option for entry-level monitoring, desktop listening and simple recording. Its sealed cups provide useful passive isolation without depending on battery-powered ANC, and the wired connection avoids Bluetooth latency and codec behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is less convenient than wireless models: the cable can tangle, portability is limited and the fit may feel firmer or warmer over long sessions. It is a better match for a quiet workstation or basic recording setup than for commuting or exercise.

Wireless versus wired: the trade-off that matters most

Wireless advantages

  • No cable during commuting or exercise.
  • Integrated controls and microphones.
  • Multipoint pairing on selected models, allowing two connected devices.
  • ANC is available at relatively low prices.

Wireless disadvantages

  • Battery cells age and are rarely user-replaceable.
  • Bluetooth can add latency in games and video.
  • Many inexpensive models use processed, bass-heavy tuning.
  • Some, including the WH-CH510, omit a 3.5mm fallback.

Wired advantages

  • No charging, pairing or Bluetooth latency.
  • Usually better sound quality per dollar.
  • A replaceable cable can extend useful life.

Wired disadvantages

  • Cables can tangle or fail.
  • Open-back designs provide almost no isolation.
  • Phones and tablets may require a USB-C or Lightning adapter, and microphone support varies by adapter.

On-ear versus over-ear fit

On-ear headphones such as the JBL Tune 510BT and Sony WH-CH510 rest directly on the ears. They are smaller and lighter but can create pressure, especially with glasses or piercings, and they usually block less external sound.

Over-ear models such as the Q30 and SHP9500 surround the ears. They are generally better for long sessions and passive isolation, but they are larger, can become warm, and depend on a good seal for bass and ANC performance. Measure comfort by the fit you can wear for an hour, not by a specification sheet.

How to choose your 2022 category winner

  1. Need wireless below about $50? Start with the JBL Tune 510BT or Sony WH-CH510. Select JBL for multipoint and endurance; select Sony when minimum weight is the priority.
  2. Need travel or office ANC? Choose the Soundcore Life Q30 and expect the biggest benefit with low-frequency rumble, not complete silence.
  3. Need the best home sound and do not care about leakage? Choose Philips SHP9500/SHP9600.
  4. Need low latency for gaming? Prefer a wired Philips, Koss or Audio-Technica model. Bluetooth gaming performance depends on the device and any low-latency mode.
  5. Need a 3.5mm fallback? Exclude Bluetooth-only models and confirm whether a phone adapter carries microphone input.
  6. Need calls? Treat microphone quality separately from music quality. The JBL was good for its price category; the Q30’s microphone was less impressive than its ANC.

What changed after 2022?

Later products should not be inserted into a historical 2022 ranking. Sony’s WH-CH520 launched in 2023, while JBL’s Tune 520BT and Soundcore’s Life Q20 2024 are newer generations. They may be better choices for a present-day purchase, but their features, prices and test results cannot establish what was available or best in 2022. Old wireless stock can also have degraded batteries, and marketplace listings may be refurbished or counterfeit.

For a current purchase, verify the exact model number, seller, warranty, return policy and charging connector. Treat the 2022 recommendations as historical choices rather than guaranteed current bargains.

The Bottom Line

2022 verdict: Choose the Soundcore Life Q30 for the most versatile wireless package, the JBL Tune 510BT for inexpensive portable Bluetooth, Philips SHP9500/SHP9600 for spacious home sound, and Koss or Audio-Technica for wired value when battery-free operation or low latency matters.
