Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFirst identify what is dropping: the iPhone’s Wi‑Fi hotspot, the internet connection while Wi‑Fi stays connected, or the iPhone’s cellular service. Check cellular data, reconnect with the Personal Hotspot screen open, and test the devices close together before changing network settings. A hotspot that disconnects only after it has been idle may be behaving normally: Apple says it can disconnect unused connections to save battery.
Start by identifying the kind of disconnection
- The iPhone’s hotspot disappears from the receiving device: Check that Personal Hotspot is enabled, the devices are close, and the receiving device is not switching to another saved network. If an older computer or tablet is involved, test compatibility mode.
- The receiving device still says it is connected, but internet stops: The local Wi‑Fi link may still be working while the iPhone’s cellular data is weak, unavailable, or restricted. Test cellular browsing on the iPhone itself.
- The connection drops only after nobody has used it for a while: Apple documents automatic disconnection when a hotspot is not being used, to conserve battery. That is different from a drop during an active download, call, or browsing session. Apple’s iPhone guide describes this idle behavior.
Try the least disruptive fixes first
- On the iPhone, turn Wi‑Fi off temporarily and try opening a webpage using cellular data. Personal Hotspot shares cellular data; it does not relay a Wi‑Fi network the iPhone is connected to. If cellular browsing fails, troubleshoot that connection before the hotspot.
- Open Settings > Personal Hotspot. Depending on the iPhone or configuration, the option may instead appear under Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot. Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- Keep the Personal Hotspot screen open while the other device joins. The Wi‑Fi network name matches the iPhone’s device name, and the password appears in Personal Hotspot settings. Apple’s setup instructions cover these steps.
- On the receiving device, turn Wi‑Fi off and back on, then select the iPhone’s hotspot again and enter its current password. If connecting between Apple devices with Instant Hotspot, also toggle Bluetooth and try again.
- Put the devices beside each other and test an active webpage or download. Apple gives approximately 30 feet (10 meters) as an Instant Hotspot range guideline, not a guaranteed range; walls, metal surfaces, vehicles, and nearby radio traffic can shorten usable range. Disconnect the receiving device from other saved Wi‑Fi networks temporarily to prevent it switching away.
- If the connection still fails, restart both devices and install the latest software available for each. Menu labels and update availability can vary by device and region.
Test Maximize Compatibility for recurring Wi‑Fi drops
On supported models, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility, turn it on, and reconnect. Apple lists iPhone 12 or later, iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation or later), and iPad mini (6th generation) among the supported devices in its troubleshooting guidance.

This is a compatibility test, especially useful with older PCs, tablets, or Wi‑Fi adapters—not a speed boost. Apple’s security documentation says the feature uses 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal; Apple also warns that it may reduce performance. Apple’s hotspot security documentation explains the radio and security behavior. Keep it enabled if it stabilizes a troublesome client; turn it off again if the connection is stable without it and you prefer the normal configuration.
Check whether cellular service or the carrier is responsible
Personal Hotspot can be switched on even when its cellular internet path is not usable. If web browsing fails on the iPhone with Wi‑Fi disabled, look for weak coverage, a temporary outage or congestion, or a cellular account or SIM/eSIM issue. A carrier may also impose hotspot eligibility, usage, or device limits; those policies vary by plan and location.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
If Personal Hotspot is missing, dimmed, or cannot be enabled, check with the carrier that the line and plan support it. Apple says carrier support is required and notes that fees or device limits can depend on the carrier and iPhone model. See Apple’s Personal Hotspot requirements. Carrier confirmation is also the right next step if cellular service keeps disappearing or hotspot access fails on every receiving device.
Use USB to separate a Wi‑Fi problem from a broader failure
For a Mac or Windows computer, connect the iPhone by USB and enable Personal Hotspot. Approve any accessory prompt and tap Trust if the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer. On Windows, Apple says to install the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes for Windows; see Apple’s connection instructions.

If USB stays online while Wi‑Fi drops, the cellular connection is probably available and the wireless hotspot path is a more likely source. Check range and compatibility. This is a diagnostic clue, not proof: a cable, port, driver, or trust issue can also make USB fail. Try a known data-capable cable and a sound port.
Bluetooth is another supported option, but it is generally slower than Wi‑Fi and better suited to light use than video calls or large downloads. Pair the devices in their Bluetooth settings, then connect to Personal Hotspot. Apple documents Wi‑Fi, USB, and Bluetooth connection methods in its Personal Hotspot guide.

Isolate a VPN, proxy, or receiving-device issue
If only one laptop or tablet disconnects, remove the iPhone hotspot from that device’s saved networks, reconnect, and install available operating-system or Wi‑Fi-adapter updates. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or, if applicable, a proxy, firewall, traffic filter, or endpoint-security tool, then test again. Apple warns that VPN configuration can interfere with local networking and some Continuity features in its Instant Hotspot guidance.
Use this only as a brief diagnostic test; re-enable protections before continuing sensitive activity, particularly on an untrusted connection. If other devices work reliably on the same iPhone hotspot, the affected receiving device is the more likely place to investigate.

Reset network settings only after simpler tests
If multiple receiving devices still fail after restart and software updates, resetting the iPhone’s network settings may clear a persistent configuration problem. The path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [iPhone] > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Apple says this removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, previously used VPN, and APN settings. It does not erase the whole iPhone, but you will need to re-establish affected network connections. Make sure you have essential Wi‑Fi passwords first. Details are in Apple’s reset guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not change APN values from generic online advice
APN settings depend on the carrier, and Apple says viewing or editing them is available only when the carrier permits it. If you manually changed an APN and the carrier confirms it is wrong, the carrier may direct you to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network > Reset Settings. Do not copy values from a forum: incorrect settings can disrupt cellular data, and a company-managed iPhone may receive them through a management profile. See Apple’s APN guidance.

Choose the next step from the test result
| What you found | Next step |
|---|---|
| Only one receiving device drops | Forget and rejoin the hotspot on that device; test its VPN, proxy, filters, Wi‑Fi adapter, and updates. |
| Every receiving device drops | Test cellular data on the iPhone, restart and update it, then confirm hotspot eligibility with the carrier. |
| Wi‑Fi fails but USB works | Focus on Wi‑Fi range, interference, saved-network switching, and Maximize Compatibility. |
| Wi‑Fi and USB both fail | Check cellular service and carrier provisioning first; if those are sound, pursue iPhone software or hardware support. |
| It disconnects only when idle | Reconnect when needed and observe whether it also drops during active use; idle disconnection can be normal battery-saving behavior. |
When to contact the carrier or Apple
Contact the carrier if Personal Hotspot is unavailable, cellular data itself is unstable, or the same failure affects every receiving device; ask it to verify plan eligibility and account provisioning. Seek Apple support if cellular and carrier access are confirmed but the iPhone continues to fail after software updates and network reset, or if the problem began after physical or liquid damage. If USB, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth all fail, sharing those test results will help separate a carrier or cellular issue from an iPhone or client-device fault.
