Fisker Joined Tesla’s NACS Charging Push: What the 2023 Deal Promised

Fisker’s August 15, 2023 agreement with Tesla was a plan, not proof of immediate charging access. Fisker said existing vehicles would use an approved NACS-to-CCS1 adapter to reach compatible Tesla Superchargers, while vehicles planned for 2025 and later would receive a native NACS inlet. The company also said CCS charging would remain available through an adapter. Because Fisker later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, owners must treat the promised rollout and today’s actual availability as separate questions.

The short version

  • Existing Fisker vehicles: Fisker expected owners to use a NACS-to-CCS1 DC fast-charging adapter, with access targeted for the first quarter of 2025.
  • Future vehicles: Fisker planned to install native NACS inlets beginning with vehicles scheduled for 2025.
  • CCS: Fisker said customers would still be able to use CCS charging through an adapter.
  • Immediate availability: The announcement did not open every Tesla charger instantly. Vehicle authorization, software, an approved adapter and station compatibility would still be required.
  • Current status: The release established an intended timetable, not completed deployment. Fisker’s later financial collapse makes current support and activation uncertain.

What Fisker actually announced

In its August 15, 2023 release, Fisker described three related commitments:

  1. Fisker customers would gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.
  2. Current and then-current vehicles would use a NACS adapter rather than receive a charge-port retrofit.
  3. Fisker’s first vehicles planned for 2025 would adopt an integrated NACS inlet.

Fisker cited approximately 12,000 Tesla Supercharger stations in the United States and Canada. That was the network’s reported size at the time, not a current station count.

How the connectors would work

Fisker Ocean vehicles originally used a CCS1 inlet for North American DC fast charging. NACS was Tesla’s connector name in 2023 and is now standardized in North America as SAE J3400.

Vehicle or charger setup What would be needed
CCS1-equipped Fisker Ocean at a compatible Tesla Supercharger An approved NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter, plus vehicle and network authorization
Future Fisker with a native NACS inlet Direct connection at a compatible NACS DC fast charger
CCS public fast charger The vehicle’s CCS capability or appropriate CCS equipment; NACS adoption was not meant to eliminate CCS overnight
Tesla Destination Charger or home AC equipment A separate AC-compatibility question; a DC fast-charging adapter is not automatically suitable

Ford’s NACS adapter overview distinguishes DC fast-charging adapters from lower-power AC adapters. They are not interchangeable.

Fisker was joining an existing industry shift

Fisker was not the first automaker to make this move. Ford announced its Tesla agreement on May 25, 2023, and General Motors announced its agreement on June 8, 2023. Both described adapter-based access followed by native NACS adoption in future vehicles.

Automaker Announcement Stated direction
Ford May 25, 2023 Adapter access and future native NACS; Ford said the arrangement covered more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers at the time
General Motors June 8, 2023 Tesla Supercharger access and NACS integration beginning in 2025
Fisker August 15, 2023 Adapter access targeted for Q1 2025 and native NACS on planned 2025 vehicles

Why automakers wanted Tesla access

The practical attraction was a larger fast-charging footprint and fewer gaps on road trips. Ford said its agreement would more than double the fast-charging options available to its EV customers at the time. GM described its deal as a way to expand charging access and simplify EV ownership.

  • Continued flexibility to use CCS networks

Those announcements established network scale and intended access; they did not establish that Tesla chargers are universally more reliable or that every location would accept every non-Tesla vehicle.

Why access would not mean every Tesla charger

Charging agreements generally depend on designated compatible sites. A Fisker driver would have needed the correct vehicle software, an approved account or app workflow, an approved adapter and a Tesla location enabled for non-Tesla charging.

Station layout could also matter. A Tesla cable may not reach comfortably when a CCS-equipped vehicle’s charge port is in a different position, and parking across spaces may not be practical or permitted. Drivers would need to check the specific station before starting a session.

What existing Fisker owners would have needed to do

  1. Confirm that the vehicle and market were eligible.
  2. Verify that Tesla access had actually been activated for Fisker vehicles.
  3. Obtain the exact approved NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter.
  4. Install any required vehicle software update.
  5. Set up the designated charging app, account and payment method.
  6. Check that the chosen Supercharger supported non-Tesla vehicles.
  7. Inspect cable reach and parking orientation before plugging in.

Do not assume that an inexpensive product labelled “NACS compatible” will work. Ford’s third-party adapter guidance says to use only adapters sold or provided by Ford or Tesla for Tesla Supercharger use and warns that Tesla prohibits other adapters at its charging stations. No Fisker-specific adapter price or universal aftermarket approval was established here.

The rollout caveat matters more now

There is a meaningful difference between a signed agreement and a functioning customer program:

  1. Agreement announced
  2. Adapter produced and distributed
  3. Vehicle software enabled
  4. Tesla sites opened to the vehicle brand
  5. Charging sessions successfully started and billed

Fisker’s release directly established only the first step and described future targets for the others. Later reporting referenced Fisker’s Chapter 11 filing in June 2024 (Power the Future). That financial distress could affect adapter distribution, software integration, customer service, warranty handling and billing administration.

Therefore, do not interpret the 2023 announcement as proof that every Fisker owner can use Tesla Superchargers today. Verify current Fisker support, adapter availability, vehicle authorization and station eligibility before relying on the program for a trip.

What the deal meant for the charging market

Fisker’s announcement was significant because it showed Tesla’s connector design moving beyond Tesla vehicles during a rapid 2023 sequence of automaker commitments. It also illustrated the transition’s practical compromise: existing CCS cars could remain useful through adapters, while new vehicles could move to a common inlet. For owners, however, a common standard only helps when the adapter, software, network permissions and support infrastructure all continue to function.
