Yes—Submerged is a real scripted short film, not just a trailer or a technology demo. Apple released it on October 10, 2024, as its first scripted film captured in Apple Immersive Video. Apple made it available at no additional charge to Vision Pro users in supported regions, and the complete immersive experience is designed for the headset.
What is Submerged about?
Written and directed by Edward Berger, Submerged is a fictional thriller set aboard a World War II-era submarine. After an attack that includes a torpedo strike, the crew faces flooding and the immediate problem of survival. The story is built around confined spaces and physical danger rather than an expansive war-film narrative. Apple describes it as a scripted short film, not a feature. Apple’s October 10, 2024 announcement identifies Jordan Barton as James Dyson, the film’s lead character.
The Venice Immersive program listing names additional principal cast members Michael Socha, Anthony Nyro, and Tucker St. The film appeared in the 2025 program, which described it as Apple’s first scripted Vision Pro film. Venice Immersive: Submerged
Why was it released as a Vision Pro exclusive?
Apple announced Submerged as part of Apple Immersive Video, a format it describes as high-resolution stereoscopic 3D with an approximately 180-degree field of view and Spatial Audio. Apple also says its immersive camera system can capture 8K 3D video; that describes the capture capability, not a guarantee that every viewer sees 8K per eye. Apple’s July 18, 2024 announcement

Instead of looking at a fixed rectangular image, the viewer can turn their head to see more of the scene around the captured viewpoint. Spatial Audio helps situate voices and environmental sounds, while the close submarine setting puts machinery, water and impacts near the viewer. This is still a pre-recorded film: viewers do not walk around the set or change what happens. Apple said its Apple Immersive Video films would debut exclusively on Vision Pro, so “released as a Vision Pro exclusive” is accurate. The announcements do not establish that the story can never appear in a different format later.
That format changes the filmmaking challenge. In a conventional shot, the director controls exactly where the audience looks. Here, viewers can look away from the main action, so staging, background performances, props and continuity need to work across more of the visible scene. The result is an experiment in film language as well as a story; whether its presence outweighs the short form and constrained viewpoint is a matter of taste.

How did Apple make the submarine feel physical?
Apple says the production filmed over three weeks in Prague, Brussels and Malta, using a full-scale, 23-ton submarine set modeled on World War II-era submarines. Built with steel, brass and other metal, sections of the set could withstand full submersion. The production used practical effects including water, steam, sparks and fire, and the performers rehearsed stunts and trained in freediving in dive tanks and open water. An underwater tank built in Prague was later sent to Belgium for a final sequence. Apple’s production account
Those details matter because immersive capture exposes more of the environment than a tightly framed shot. A convincing set has to hold up when a viewer looks toward its edges, and practical effects can make the confined setting feel immediate. How to watch Submerged on Vision Pro
- Put on Apple Vision Pro and open the Apple TV app.
- Look for the Apple Immersive Video area or search for Submerged. Apple’s support guide says the app supports searches by title, cast or crew; menu labels and catalog layout can vary with software and region. Apple Support: Watch on Apple Vision Pro
- Select the film, then stream or download it if that option is offered. Downloading can help when connectivity is unreliable; allow for storage and battery use.
- Use the headset’s Spatial Audio system or headphones for the intended spatial sound presentation. Take a break or stop if immersive viewing causes discomfort.
Apple’s October 2024 announcement said the title was available at no additional cost to Vision Pro users in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. For mainland China, Apple pointed users to selected titles in the Migu Video and Tencent Video apps. Availability can differ by region, and the listed markets should not be read as a guarantee that every Vision Pro catalog is identical.
Is it free, and is it a full movie?
Apple described Submerged as free for Vision Pro users in supported markets, meaning there is no separate film charge under that launch offer. It does not make the headset free. Apple’s announcement does not establish that Apple TV+ is required, so check the current listing in the Apple TV app rather than assuming a subscription is needed. The film is a scripted narrative, but it is a short-form experience; Apple’s launch announcement does not specify an official runtime.

It is not a standard 2D stream, an interactive game, or the first VR narrative film ever made. Apple’s specific claim is that it was the first scripted film captured in Apple Immersive Video. The complete experience requires compatible Vision Pro access; the available sources do not establish an equivalent release for a phone, television, standard Apple TV device or another headset. A trailer or behind-the-scenes video can show aspects of the production, but cannot reproduce the immersive film.

If you already own the headset, Submerged is a useful, no-separate-charge way to see how Apple applies immersive video to scripted fiction. It may especially appeal to viewers interested in submarine settings, practical effects or experimental cinema. Its compact story and unusual viewpoint may be less satisfying if you want a conventional feature with extensive character development.

If you are considering Vision Pro, do not treat one short film as a sufficient reason to buy it. Consider the broader immersive-video catalog and the headset’s other uses, then try a demonstration if one is available. Apple offers purchase and demo information on its Vision Pro buying page. Viewers sensitive to claustrophobic spaces, flooding imagery or headset discomfort may also prefer to skip it or stop watching if the experience becomes unpleasant.
