For most people, a discounted Apple Watch Series 9 is the best balance of features, size and everyday comfort. Choose the SE 2 only if it is substantially cheaper and you can live without an always-on display, ECG and temperature sensing. Choose the Ultra 2 for its longer battery rating, rugged build and outdoor features—not because it is automatically the best watch for everyone. In 2026, all three are older models, so compare their price and condition with newer options before buying.
Here, “Apple Watch SE” means the second-generation SE, or SE 2. Apple’s current comparison page lists newer generations, including SE 3, Series 11 and Ultra 3; the SE 2, Series 9 and Ultra 2 are now mainly worth considering as used, refurbished, clearance or remaining-stock purchases.
At a glance: which Apple Watch should you buy?
| Model | Best for | What you gain | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 2 | Basic smartwatch and fitness use on a tight budget | Core activity and heart-rate features, light aluminum case, lower likely used price | No always-on display, ECG or temperature sensing; older S8 chip |
| Apple Watch Series 9 | Most people seeking a compact everyday watch | Always-on display, S9 chip, ECG, temperature sensing and brighter screen than SE 2 | Standard battery rating; it is an older generation, so price matters |
| Apple Watch Ultra 2 | Outdoor activities, endurance and longer intervals between charges | Larger and brighter display, titanium case, cellular hardware, advanced GPS and longer battery rating | Large, heavy and potentially poor value if near the price of Ultra 3 |
The Series 9 is the sensible default when the price is right. The SE 2 is the budget choice, while the Ultra 2 makes sense when you will use its battery and outdoor hardware. If any of these costs close to its newer equivalent, compare the newer watch instead.
How the three watches differ
The SE 2 is the stripped-back option: it handles everyday notifications, activity tracking and basic heart-rate functions, but leaves out several sensors and display conveniences. The Series 9 is the standard premium model, adding an always-on screen and health features in a more conventional size. The Ultra 2 shares the Series 9’s S9 generation but emphasizes endurance, visibility, construction and specialized outdoor use.

Which screen is better for everyday use?
SE 2: a screen you have to wake
The SE 2’s display turns off when your wrist is down. Indoors, it remains usable, but checking the time or a workout metric means raising your wrist or tapping the screen. That is a noticeable daily trade-off if you glance at your watch often.
Series 9: the best everyday balance
The Series 9 stays visible in always-on mode and has a higher maximum brightness rating than the SE 2. Its screen is easier to check at a glance without taking on the Ultra 2’s size.
Ultra 2: easiest to read outdoors, hardest to wear discreetly
The Ultra 2’s display has the highest maximum brightness rating here, which helps in strong outdoor light. Its 49mm case is also much larger than the other two: that can improve readability, but may feel intrusive on a small wrist, under sleeves or during sleep.

Health, safety and fitness features
Health sensors and alerts
All three provide core heart-rate monitoring and can offer high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS, subject to availability and setup. The Series 9 and Ultra 2 add an electrical heart sensor for ECG and a temperature sensor; the SE 2 has neither. These additions are useful distinctions, not a guarantee of better health outcomes.
ECG, irregular-rhythm alerts and other health features are not medical diagnoses or substitutes for professional care. Availability can depend on country, regulatory authorization, compatible iPhone and software. Blood Oxygen is particularly configuration- and region-dependent, so check Apple’s listing for the exact model rather than assuming every Series 9 or Ultra 2 has the same functionality.
Workouts and outdoor tracking
For walking, running, cycling, gym workouts and recreational swimming, the SE 2 and Series 9 cover the needs of many users. The Ultra 2 is differentiated by dual-frequency precision GPS, a physical Action button, water-temperature sensing, a depth gauge and the Depth app, as well as its brighter, larger display. Its 100-meter water-resistance rating does not mean it is appropriate for every kind of scuba or technical diving; check Apple’s guidance and the software you plan to use.
Battery life: Apple’s ratings versus a used watch
Apple rates the SE 2 and Series 9 for up to 18 hours of normal use. Its rating for Ultra 2 is up to 36 hours, or up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode under Apple’s stated conditions. These are manufacturer ratings, not guaranteed runtimes: GPS workouts, cellular use, music streaming, sleep tracking and cold temperatures can reduce battery life. For a used or refurbished watch, battery condition may matter more than its original rating. Check battery health, ask what the seller guarantees and read the return terms. Ultra 2 is more convenient for sleep tracking and multi-day outings because of its higher rating, but age and use can reduce the advantage.
Size, comfort and durability
The SE 2 is the lightest choice, particularly in its smaller case. Apple lists its 40mm GPS version at 26.4 grams and 44mm GPS version at 32.9 grams. Series 9 is a middle ground in case size; Ultra 2’s 49mm titanium case weighs roughly 61–62 grams before the band. Band weight adds to the total, and case size does not directly equal the visible display area.
For materials, the SE 2 uses aluminum and Ion-X front glass. Series 9 is available in aluminum or stainless steel, with sapphire crystal on stainless-steel versions. Ultra 2 uses titanium and a flat sapphire crystal display. Sapphire is more scratch-resistant than ordinary glass, not scratch-proof. Ultra 2 is also rated IP6X for dust resistance and tested to MIL-STD 810H conditions; neither rating is an unconditional promise against damage.
Water resistance is not the same as being waterproof, and seals can age or be affected by damage. Apple lists 50-meter water resistance for SE 2 and Series 9 and 100 meters for Ultra 2. For everyday office, gym and running use, the Ultra’s extra construction may be unnecessary; for rugged outdoor use, it can be a meaningful advantage.

GPS or cellular: know what you are buying
The SE 2 and Series 9 were sold in GPS-only and GPS + Cellular configurations. Ultra 2 includes cellular. Cellular lets a watch handle some tasks when the paired iPhone is not nearby, but it does not turn the watch into a full iPhone replacement. A compatible carrier plan is generally required and may carry a recurring fee; roaming and emergency-calling behavior depend on the carrier and market.
For a used cellular watch, confirm the exact configuration, carrier compatibility and activation status before paying. Cellular availability does not mean service is included in the purchase price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility and software support in 2026
Apple’s compatibility information gives iPhone XS or later and iOS 17 or later as the original baseline for these generations. Requirements for newer watches have since moved on: Apple’s compatibility page lists newer models with newer iPhone and iOS requirements. Check that page against your own phone before buying, since compatibility requirements change over time.
Series 9 and Ultra 2 use the newer S9 chip generation, while SE 2 uses S8. That makes the S9 watches the more forward-looking picks of this trio, but Apple does not promise a fixed number of future watchOS updates. Hardware capability and software support are not the same thing.

How to choose by price and use
Choose SE 2 if basic features and low cost come first
- You mainly want notifications, timers, Apple Pay, activity rings, workouts and core heart-rate features.
- You prefer a lighter, smaller watch or are buying a first smartwatch for a child or casual user.
- You do not need ECG, temperature sensing or an always-on display.
- It costs substantially less than a good-condition Series 9.
If the Series 9 is only modestly more expensive in comparable condition, the always-on display, newer chip, ECG, temperature sensing and brighter screen make it the stronger buy.
Choose Series 9 as the everyday all-rounder
- You want a capable watch for work, commuting, ordinary fitness and sleep tracking without Ultra 2’s bulk.
- You value an always-on display and want ECG and temperature-sensing features where available.
- You can find a certified-refurbished or lightly used unit at a clear discount to a current model.
Do not pay extra solely for the “Series” name. Compare its total price and warranty with the current SE 3 or Series 11.
Choose Ultra 2 for endurance and outdoor hardware
- You regularly hike, camp, do endurance workouts, dive recreationally or spend substantial time outdoors.
- You value battery life, bright outdoor readability, precision GPS, cellular hardware and a physical Action button.
- You are comfortable wearing a large, heavy 49mm watch.
- It costs meaningfully less than Ultra 3.
For basic notifications and casual workouts, Ultra 2’s premium buys size, battery and specialized hardware that you may not use.
Skip the older models when the price gap is small
Compare against Apple’s current SE 3, Series 11 and Ultra 3 listings. A newer watch can be the better purchase when the older one’s discount is too small to offset its age, battery uncertainty and potentially shorter remaining software-support runway. Use the live Apple Watch comparison page for current model options rather than treating older refurbished prices as permanent.

Before buying a used watch
- Have the seller remove Activation Lock. The watch should be removed from the seller’s Apple Account before you hand over payment; do not rely on a promise to do it later.
- Check battery health and the return policy. Ask to see the battery-health status and get any battery guarantee in writing.
- Confirm the exact model and connectivity. Verify generation, case size and GPS versus GPS + Cellular. For cellular, check carrier and regional compatibility.
- Inspect the watch in person if possible. Look around the display edges and back crystal; test the Digital Crown, side button, speaker, microphone and charging.
- Ask about water exposure and damage. Do not rely on an older watch’s original water-resistance rating after years of use or possible impacts.
- Confirm what is included. Check for the correct charger and a usable band, and factor worn or third-party accessories into the value.
When refurbished is worth the premium
Refurbished standards differ by seller. Compare warranty length, battery-health standard, return window, parts policy, Activation Lock handling and included charger. Apple says its Certified Refurbished products are tested and include a one-year limited warranty and 14-day return policy, subject to its terms; stock and configurations vary. See Apple Certified Refurbished Apple Watch inventory.
Apple’s U.S. refurbished store listings observed for this comparison showed SE 2 prices of $169 for a 40mm GPS configuration and $189 for a 44mm GPS configuration, and Ultra 2 listings ranging from $589 to $679 depending on configuration and timing. These are dated inventory snapshots, not stable prices or general market values. A Series 9 price was not established here, so check the live listing rather than assuming a figure.
