A June 2024 report said the company had suspended work on a high-end successor while prioritizing a cheaper headset for late 2025. That affordable model was never announced in Apple’s official materials. Instead, Apple released an upgraded Apple Vision Pro with an M5 chip on October 22, 2025. As of August 18, 2026, later reports suggest Apple has reduced its commitment to the current expensive-headset strategy, but there is still no official cancellation or replacement launch date.
What the June 2024 report actually said
The Information, as summarized in contemporary coverage, reported that Apple had told at least one supplier it was suspending work on its next high-end Vision headset and redirecting resources to a less expensive Vision product targeted for the end of 2025. Techmeme’s June 2024 coverage characterized the lower-cost device as a separate, non-Pro product.
That wording described a change in priorities, not a final product cancellation. “Vision Pro 2” was media shorthand; Apple had not announced a product with that name. A supplier report also is not the same as an Apple roadmap statement.
Why a cheaper headset made strategic sense
The first Vision Pro launched in the United States at $3,499, before prescription inserts, AppleCare+, and optional accessories. That price places it far above mainstream consumer VR. Reviewers and market coverage also repeatedly raised its weight and long-session comfort as barriers.

A lower-priced, lighter product could give Apple a larger installed base for visionOS applications, games, immersive video and enterprise tools. More users would also give developers a stronger reason to invest in the platform, while making Apple more competitive with accessible headsets such as Meta’s Quest line. These are market pressures and reasonable strategic explanations, not a public statement of Apple’s internal decision-making.
What Apple launched in 2025
Instead of the rumored affordable headset, Apple announced an upgraded Apple Vision Pro on October 15, 2025, and made it available in stores on October 22. Apple kept the Apple Vision Pro name rather than calling it Vision Pro 2. The official announcement is at Apple’s newsroom.

Apple described improvements to rendering, performance, battery life and comfort, but the refresh did not address the fundamental price barrier. It therefore should not be presented as the cheaper 2025 headset promised in the 2024 report.
Did the cheaper 2025 model launch?
Not according to the official Apple announcements available for this update. Apple’s product and newsroom pages document the M5 Vision Pro, not a lower-cost model. The reported device could have been delayed, canceled, redesigned or folded into another project; the public evidence does not establish which explanation is correct.

The late-2025 target is now a missed prediction, not an upcoming release date. Do not treat it as proof that Apple permanently abandoned the idea, either.
Apple’s reported position in 2026
In April 2026, MacRumors reported that Apple had “all but given up” on the current Vision Pro strategy after the M5 refresh failed to revive interest. The report left open the possibility of a cheaper and more comfortable future headset. It was not an Apple cancellation announcement.

Tom’s Hardware’s account noted a complication: Apple continued hiring in its Vision-related organization. That supports a distinction between retreating from the current product strategy and ending all spatial-computing work. Apple continues to publish Vision Pro and visionOS material through its Vision Pro newsroom section.
A separate June 2026 report said the U.S. price had risen from $3,499 to $3,699, but that figure should be checked against Apple’s live store because it was not confirmed in the official newsroom material reviewed. See MacRumors’ report for the attribution.

What the uncertainty means for buyers

Costs beyond the headset
- Apple listed ZEISS Readers at $99 and Prescription inserts at $149 in the United States at the M5 launch.
- The Apple Vision Pro Travel Case was listed at $199, and the Dual Knit Band at $99.
- Apple listed Logitech Muse at $129.95 and a PlayStation VR2 Sense controller and charging-station package at $249.95.
Used or refurbished hardware can improve value, but check battery condition, lens inserts, light-seal fit, return rights and warranty status. Developers should also account for the risk of building for a relatively small installed base even while visionOS software support continues.
Bottom line on Vision Pro 2
The 2024 report was directionally important but is often overstated. Apple appears to have paused or redirected work on a high-end successor, then shipped an M5 Vision Pro refresh instead of the rumored cheaper 2025 headset. Later reporting indicates greater caution about another expensive headset generation, not a confirmed end to Vision Pro or spatial computing. Treat any future affordable Apple headset as unannounced until Apple provides a product, price and release date.
