Yes, you can still get free standard delivery on Amazon without Prime. Amazon’s current U.S. consumer explanation says non-Prime shoppers generally need at least $35 in eligible items, with the described free option arriving in roughly five to eight days. That is not a guaranteed nationwide rule for every account: the minimum can vary by address, customer, item eligibility, fulfillment method and Amazon’s current policies.
Check the delivery choices shown for your signed-in cart. Checkout—not a banner or a product-page message—is the final authority on whether your order qualifies.
What non-Prime shoppers get
Amazon says customers without Prime can receive free standard delivery when an order reaches the applicable minimum in eligible merchandise. Its consumer guide, published March 11, 2025, describes a $35 minimum and an estimated delivery time of about five to eight days for that option. See Amazon’s free-delivery explanation.
There is no single permanently guaranteed threshold for every U.S. address. Amazon has historically used different minimums in nearby markets; the Associated Press reported examples of $25 in Seattle and $35 in Bellevue (AP report). The Information separately reported a move from $25 to $35 for some non-Prime customers, not a confirmed nationwide change (The Information report).

Why your minimum may differ
- Address or region: Amazon can apply different thresholds and delivery promises by destination.
- Account or policy changes: Amazon may test or change terms for selected customers without making the change universal.
- Fulfillment method: Amazon-fulfilled products and merchant-fulfilled marketplace products can have different shipping rules.
- Product type: Oversize, hazardous, perishable, refrigerated, subscription and other restricted items may use separate terms.
- Delivery program: Grocery, Whole Foods and other services are not the same as ordinary Amazon.com parcel shipping.
What counts toward the free-shipping minimum?
The number that matters is the subtotal of eligible merchandise, not necessarily the total shown in your cart. Amazon advises checking the product page for free-shipping eligibility and confirming that the item is fulfilled and shipped by Amazon. Its seller guidance explains how Amazon-fulfilled items can qualify when the customer meets the applicable minimum; see Amazon’s seller shipping guide.
- The item price may count; shipping charges, taxes, fees, gift wrap and similar non-product amounts generally do not.
- Items sold by different marketplace sellers may not combine toward one qualifying shipment.
- Amazon-fulfilled and merchant-fulfilled items can be governed by separate rules.
- A product listed on Amazon is not automatically eligible for the same free-delivery benefit as an Amazon-fulfilled product.
- One order can be split into packages with different dates and charges.
Why a cart over $35 can still show a shipping charge
- Recalculate the eligible subtotal. Remove ineligible products mentally and see whether the remaining merchandise reaches the threshold shown for your address.
- Inspect every product page. Look for the free-shipping message and the “fulfilled and shipped by Amazon” information.
- Separate sellers and fulfillment channels. A $20 item from one seller plus a $20 item from another may not form one $40 qualifying shipment.
- Review delivery speed. Free standard delivery may be offered on a later date while expedited options remain paid.
- Confirm the destination. Sign in, select the exact address and return to checkout; eligibility can depend on both account and address.
- Check for special-category rules. Grocery, hazardous, oversized, perishable, gift and recurring-order services can have distinct fees or minimums.
- Look for changed messaging. Eligibility or the threshold may have changed between browsing and checkout.
- Save evidence if Amazon appears inconsistent. Capture the product page, cart and checkout delivery options before contacting customer service. Checkout systems can update delivery eligibility and dates during the process; related guidance is available in Amazon’s delivery-eligibility documentation.
Do not add unwanted products merely to cross a threshold. Compare the cost of paying shipping, waiting, buying locally or ordering from another retailer.

Separate the decision into shipping savings, time savings and the value of benefits you would actually use. The annual U.S. plan is $139 and the monthly plan is $14.99. If a hypothetical paid shipping charge were $6.99, $139 divided by $6.99 is about 20 charges per year. At a hypothetical $5.99 charge, the equivalent is about 24 charges. These are illustrations, not Amazon’s promised rates; actual charges vary by seller, product, destination and speed.

Prime is more defensible when
- You place frequent orders below the applicable free-shipping minimum.
- Fast delivery has meaningful value for work, household needs or emergencies.
- You regularly use Prime’s non-shipping benefits.
- You can avoid buying filler items simply to reach $35.
Staying non-Prime is often better when
- You order only a few times a year.
- You can wait for standard delivery and consolidate purchases.
- You do not use the bundled services.
- Your occasional shipping charges remain below the membership cost.

Amazon’s June 2026 materials list Prime Access at $6.99 per month for qualifying government-assistance or income-verified customers. Details are at Amazon Prime Access.
Eligible new higher-education students and 18-to-24-year-olds can receive six months at $0, followed by $7.49 per month or $69 per year, according to the same announcement. Check eligibility at Prime for Young Adults. Prices, trials and eligibility can change, so confirm the offer before enrolling.

Ways to avoid paying for Prime
- Consolidate planned purchases until you reach the applicable eligible-item minimum.
- Add only products you already intend to buy; never buy filler items for a shipping badge.
- Select Amazon Day or the slowest free option when checkout offers it.
- Compare the landed price, including shipping, with Walmart, Target, Costco, local stores and the manufacturer’s site. Their current terms and prices vary by location and should be checked directly.
- Use store pickup when it is available and convenient.
- Buy routine household staples locally when shipping costs more than the convenience is worth.
- Check whether another household member already has Prime and whether Amazon’s current household-sharing rules permit the arrangement you want.
- Use a Prime trial only for a genuine short-term need, and set a cancellation reminder.
Special case: grocery orders
Amazon grocery and Whole Foods delivery do not follow the same rules as ordinary Amazon.com parcels. Amazon says free same-day grocery delivery is available to Prime members on orders over $25 in most areas, while non-Prime delivery and pickup terms differ by retailer and location.
