Google Nest Thermostat Hit $89.99 in a 2025 Black Friday Deal—but It Wasn’t the Newest Model

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Nest thermostat deal behind the “$99” headline was for Google’s standard Nest Thermostat, not its newest model. Early Black Friday coverage reported that standard model at $89.99 in November 2025; a separate June 2024 promotion put it at $99.99. Those are historical prices, not confirmation of an active Amazon deal today. Google’s newest thermostat is the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), which launched in the U.S. at $279.99.

Which Nest thermostat was on sale?

The discounted device was the standard Google Nest Thermostat, the more affordable model introduced in 2020. A November 2025 deal report put it at $89.99 during early Black Friday promotions. A separate June 2024 report described a $99.99 promotion at Amazon and Best Buy.

The standard model’s historical $129.99 retail price makes $99.99 a $30 reduction, or about 23%; at $89.99, the reduction is $40, or about 31%. These comparisons use the reported U.S. MSRP and promotion prices, not a verified current listing. Neither report establishes today’s Amazon price, stock, seller, coupon requirements, shipping, or return terms. Check the product page and checkout total before buying; color and seller can affect the offer.

Is it Google’s newest Nest thermostat?

No. Google’s newest model is the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), launched in the U.S. at $279.99. It is a different, higher-end product—not the standard Nest Thermostat at a discount. Google positions the basic model for app-based control and scheduling, while the fourth-generation Learning model adds more extensive learning, sensor, and HVAC features.

What the standard Nest Thermostat offers—and what it leaves out

The standard Nest Thermostat has a mirrored-glass display, guided schedule setup in the Google Home app, and energy features including Eco and Savings Finder. Google says it works with approximately 85% of heating and cooling systems. That figure is a broad compatibility estimate, not a guarantee for a particular home.

It does not support Nest Temperature Sensors, and it has fewer advanced learning and HVAC capabilities than the fourth-generation Learning model. Google’s product comparison is the best place to check feature details before choosing between them.

HVAC scope Google says it works with approximately 85% of systems; some installations need additional power hardware. Supports more configurations, including humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and ventilation systems.
Best fit Basic smart control and scheduling in a compatible, relatively simple system. Buyers wanting the newest Nest, room sensing, more learning features, or support for more complex equipment.

The fourth-generation model also adds natural heating and cooling, Smart Ventilation, and System Health Monitor. Google lists Matter certification and control through Google Home or compatible Matter ecosystems. Its product page lists a 2.68-inch, 600 × 600-pixel display and a two-year retail warranty; HVAC Pros receive a five-year warranty.

Check HVAC compatibility before ordering

Nest thermostats generally work with many 24-volt systems, including gas, oil, or electric forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant setups. But system type and wiring matter. Google notes that the standard Nest Thermostat may need a C wire or Nest Power Connector for heat-only, cool-only, some heat-pump, some zoned, and other systems that cannot reliably supply power through existing wiring. A thermostat that powers on initially can still have power problems later if the wiring is inadequate.

  1. Identify your HVAC system and thermostat wiring; do not rely on wire color alone.
  2. Use Google’s compatibility guidance and checker with the wires and system details from your home.
  3. Check whether the result calls for a C wire or a Nest Power Connector. The connector addresses some power needs; it does not make an incompatible system compatible.
  4. For proprietary, zoned, multi-stage, or otherwise complex equipment—or wiring you cannot confidently identify—ask an HVAC professional before purchasing.

Setup, app, and voice-control requirements

The standard Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) are set up through the Google Home app, which guides users through compatibility, wiring, installation, and configuration. Buyers moving from an older Nest should not assume these models use the same setup workflow as devices configured in the Nest app.

Alexa voice control is available after adding the thermostat in Google Home and enabling Google’s Nest skill. That integration supports commands such as changing the home temperature; it does not replace Google Home for installation or advanced configuration. See Google’s Alexa setup instructions.

Who should consider the deal—and who should skip it?

The standard model may suit you if:

  • You want lower-cost app control and scheduling, rather than the newest Nest hardware.
  • Google’s compatibility checker approves your HVAC system and any required power solution is practical.
  • You do not need room-by-room temperature sensing or the advanced features of the Learning model.
  • The listing is for a new unit from a seller you trust, with acceptable delivery and return terms.

Choose the fourth-generation Learning model or another solution if:

  • You specifically want Google’s newest thermostat, temperature sensors, or automatic learning.
  • Your system uses a humidifier, dehumidifier, ventilation equipment, or more complex HVAC controls.
  • You want to avoid relying on Google Home, or your system is proprietary or fails Google’s compatibility check.

Replacing an older Nest? Check its generation

Google ended app and cloud support for first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025. Google says those devices can still be adjusted locally, but remote app control, notifications, third-party assistants, and some connected features stop working. Eligible affected owners were offered the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) for $149.99 in the U.S., subject to offer eligibility. That replacement offer is distinct from the historical standard-model deal. Details are in Google’s support notice.
