Is there a current OneDrive referral bonus?
No active, generally available referral-storage offer is documented in Microsoft’s current consumer storage FAQ or OneDrive pricing information as of August 18, 2026. Those pages describe the free storage allowance, paid plans, and storage management, but do not publish a referral dashboard, reward amount, eligibility rules, or referral terms. Microsoft’s storage FAQ and its OneDrive plans and pricing page are the relevant current references.
This does not prove that Microsoft has permanently ended every possible limited or account-specific promotion. It does mean there is no reliable basis for expecting a referral reward unless Microsoft displays a live offer in your own account.
What was the old 500 MB referral bonus?
Historical Microsoft Q&A material describes a OneDrive referral feature that awarded about 500 MB of additional storage per successful referral. Community reports say the invite link later disappeared or stopped working, with reports of problems by 2024. The 500 MB amount is historical—not a current Microsoft offer—and no dependable official cap or current eligibility conditions are established. The Microsoft Q&A discussion is community material, not current referral terms.

Older instructions commonly point to storage management on OneDrive’s website, sometimes under “Manage storage” or “Plans and upgrades.” That is not a dependable current menu path: Microsoft’s present support information explains storage and upgrades but does not provide a referral workflow. A missing “Invite” or referral control is not a problem you can fix by following an old tutorial.
How to check your account safely
- Go directly to OneDrive on the web and sign in with the personal Microsoft account you use for OneDrive.
- Open the account’s storage-management or upgrade area.
- Look for an offer explicitly identified as a Microsoft referral or invite promotion.
- Before sharing anything, check that the offer itself states the reward, eligibility conditions, expiration date, and official terms.
- If no such offer appears, treat the account as ineligible for a referral bonus. Do not rely on an old article or a third-party link to create one.
A link that opens OneDrive is not necessarily a referral link. Ordinary OneDrive sharing links grant access to files or folders; Microsoft’s sharing documentation describes collaboration, not storage credits. OneDrive file and folder sharing does not establish that inviting someone to a shared folder earns storage.

How much free storage does OneDrive include?
A free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of Microsoft cloud storage. That quota is shared across OneDrive files and photos, Outlook.com attachments, and Microsoft 365 app data. Outlook.com’s free mailbox allowance is a separate 15 GB, so the email mailbox and shared cloud-storage quota are not one combined pool. Check both if you are running out of space. Ways to get more space without a referral
Free up space you already have
- Review large OneDrive files and duplicate photos, then delete or move items you no longer need.
- Empty the OneDrive recycle bin after confirming you do not need its contents.
- Check Outlook attachments and Microsoft 365 app data too, because they draw on the shared 5 GB cloud quota.
- If your email itself is the issue, check the separate Outlook.com mailbox allowance rather than assuming a OneDrive upgrade will solve every mailbox limit.

Check Microsoft’s current plan details and prices. Basic and Personal storage is not shareable with other people. Family can be shared with up to five other people, with each person receiving up to 1 TB. Choose Basic for a relatively small storage need, Personal when the apps and larger individual quota justify the recurring cost, and Family only when multiple people will use it.
Check whether a device promotion applies
Some Samsung devices have had temporary OneDrive storage promotions. These are device- and account-dependent, not referral rewards. Microsoft says new users could no longer link Samsung Gallery to OneDrive beginning May 1, 2026; existing linked users were directed to use OneDrive camera-roll backup after September 30, 2026. Consider another provider if it fits your devices better
If your files and photos already live in another ecosystem, compare the provider’s current storage terms before moving anything. Google One may suit Google Photos, Gmail, Android, and Google Workspace users; Dropbox emphasizes its own file-sharing and collaboration ecosystem; and iCloud+ may fit Apple devices and iCloud Photos. Google Drive is another option for Google Docs and Sheets collaboration: Google Drive. No competitor prices are compared here. Before switching, account for moving files, duplicate copies, existing sharing links, and how well the new service works with your devices and apps.

Microsoft says an account over its storage allowance may be blocked from new uploads, edits, or synchronization; files may become read-only. If the relevant Outlook storage limit is exceeded, Outlook.com may be unable to send or receive email. Microsoft also warns that extended over-quota conditions can eventually lead to OneDrive file deletion, so do not treat the account as indefinite free backup. - Delete or move files you no longer need, then empty the recycle bin if appropriate.
- Check which quota is over limit: shared Microsoft cloud storage, Outlook.com mailbox storage, or both.
- If you buy more storage, allow up to 24 hours for the quota to appear. Microsoft recommends contacting support if it has not updated after 48 hours.
- If a temporary promotional quota expires, do not assume it can be renewed; reduce usage or choose a paid plan if you need continued capacity.
How to avoid fake storage-bonus offers
- Use Microsoft’s website or the OneDrive app directly, rather than signing in through an unsolicited promotion link.
- Do not enter your Microsoft password on a third-party “free storage” or “bonus generator” page.
- Do not install a browser extension, run a script, or modify a URL to unlock a supposed reward.
- Remember that a shared-folder invitation and a storage referral are different things; sharing access alone does not demonstrate a storage credit.
Personal Microsoft accounts and work or school accounts can have different features and policies. Do not assume a consumer promotion applies to an organization-managed account; Microsoft distinguishes these account contexts in its OneDrive account and system information.
