Several built-in games shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7 contain an inactive developer-style Debug menu. It can expose commands such as Force Win, Force Lose, Autoplay, Force Save, card-deck changes, and game-specific information such as FreeCell hands or Minesweeper mines. The menu is not enabled through normal game settings: you must edit the game’s localized .exe.mui resource file, then replace the protected file. This is a reversible but unofficial modification, best performed on a backed-up Vista/7 virtual machine.
What this hidden menu is—and is not
The procedure documented for Vista and Windows 7 makes a hidden menu visible by copying a POPUP "Debug" menu definition into the menu resource the game actually displays. A .mui file is a localized resource library containing menus, dialogs, and strings; the game’s executable loads these resources separately from its main .exe. Resource Hacker can inspect and edit compiled resource libraries, including .mui files (official Resource Hacker site).
This is not an officially documented consumer setting. AskVG’s original tutorial describes the feature and reports historical explanations about its development purpose; Microsoft’s Windows 7 material confirms the built-in games and Games Explorer context but does not document this menu as a supported feature (AskVG procedure; Microsoft Windows Experience Blog).
Commands vary by game. The menu may help test or demonstrate a game, but using Force Win or reveal commands is cheating rather than ordinary play.

Supported Vista and Windows 7 games
The documented procedure covers these eight built-in games. The paths below are typical English-language locations; a 64-bit installation or a different edition may use another location.
| Game | Typical English-language MUI path |
|---|---|
| Solitaire | C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesSolitaireen-USSolitaire.exe.mui |
| Spider Solitaire | C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesSpiderSolitaireen-USSpiderSolitaire.exe.mui |
| FreeCell | C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFreeCellen-USFreeCell.exe.mui |
| Minesweeper | C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMinesweeperen-USMinesweeper.exe.mui |
| Hearts | C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHeartsen-USHearts.exe.mui |

| Chess (Chess Titans) | C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesChessen-USChess.exe.mui |
| Purble Place | C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesPurble Placeen-USPurblePlace.exe.mui |
Replace en-US with the installed language folder, such as fr-FR or de-DE. If the documented directory is absent, search for the game executable and its adjacent language resources; some systems use C:Program Files (x86). Windows editions can also omit or disable Games. In Windows 7 Enterprise, for example, Microsoft guidance points to Start → Control Panel → Programs and Features → Turn Windows features on or off → Games (Microsoft Q&A).
What the Debug menu can expose
- Solitaire and some other games: Force Win, Force Lose, Autoplay, Force Save, and sometimes card-deck or background controls.
- FreeCell: controls that can reveal hands and affect win-related testing.
- Minesweeper: mine-reveal functions.
- Purble Place: ways to reveal content hidden behind tiles or curtains.
- Hearts, Mahjong, Chess, and Spider Solitaire: a Debug popup may exist, but its commands are build-dependent and should not be assumed to match Solitaire.
Some Vista/7 releases also retain keyboard shortcuts, including Solitaire’s Alt+Shift+2 and FreeCell’s Ctrl+Shift+F10. Those shortcuts are separate from editing the resource file and do not establish that later Windows versions contain the same implementation.

Before editing
- Use a Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation containing the original game.
- Close the game completely.
- Make a copy of the original
.muifile outsideProgram Files. - Have administrator access and a separate test copy or virtual-machine snapshot if possible.
- Install a resource editor. Resource Hacker’s publisher currently lists version 5.2.8, freeware status, support for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows resources, and
.muiediting (publisher page). Download only from the publisher rather than using an unverified modified file.
Expose the Debug popup with Resource Hacker
- Open Resource Hacker and choose File → Open.
- Select the game’s localized
.exe.muifile and expand the Menu resource tree. - Inspect the menu scripts. The Solitaire example in the original tutorial uses resources
102,103, and122, but IDs can differ by build or language. Identify the active menu by its visible game entries rather than assuming those numbers are universal. - Open the resource that contains a block beginning
POPUP "Debug"(traditionally menu103). Copy the entire popup, including its opening and closing braces. - Open the active menu (traditionally
102) and paste the complete Debug popup before that menu’s final closing brace. - Click Compile Script. A label change or a partial copy is insufficient; the complete popup definition must be compiled into the displayed menu.
Optional appearance commands
In the documented Solitaire example, another resource (traditionally menu 122) contains appearance entries such as Change Card Deck. You can copy those entries into the active menu using the same method. Treat this as optional: available appearance commands differ between games and builds.

- Save the edited resource. If Resource Hacker cannot write inside
Program Files, save to the desktop or another writable folder first. - Keep the original backup, then copy the edited file back into the game’s language directory and approve the administrator prompt.
- If the menu is still absent, open an elevated Command Prompt by searching for
cmd, right-clicking Command Prompt, and choosing Run as administrator. - Run
mcbuilder, wait for it to finish, restart Windows, and launch the game again. This rebuilds the MUI cache as recommended in the original procedure.
Troubleshooting and recovery
The game or MUI file is missing
The Games feature may be disabled, the game may not be installed, the locale folder may differ, or you may be using Windows 8 or later. Search for the game’s executable, check both Program Files locations, and verify that the installation is an original Vista/7 game rather than Microsoft Solitaire Collection or a third-party remake.
Resource Hacker will not save
UAC, TrustedInstaller ownership, an open game process, or a script syntax error can block saving. Close the game, restart Resource Hacker with administrator privileges, save a test copy outside Program Files, confirm that the copy opens, and then replace the original. If the editor created an _original.mui backup or reports an access violation, do not delete your known-good backup.

The Debug menu appears in the editor but not in the game
- Confirm that the popup was inserted into the menu the game actually uses.
- Check that the complete
POPUP "Debug"block and braces were copied. - Verify the correct locale file was replaced, not merely edited elsewhere.
- Run elevated
mcbuilder, restart Windows, and try again. - Confirm that the game is the Vista/7 build.
User reports attached to the original tutorial include unsuccessful replacements and menus that remained hidden, so this is build-dependent rather than guaranteed.
Menus are corrupted or the game will not launch
Restore the original .mui backup. The usual causes are editing the wrong resource, pasting outside the menu structure, or failing to compile the script. Rebuild the MUI cache and restart if Windows continues loading stale resources.
An update removes the menu
System repair, reinstalling the Games feature, or servicing can replace modified resources. Keep the backup and treat the change as disposable.

Compatibility and safety limits
This method targets the Vista and Windows 7 game binaries and resource layouts. Do not present it as a Windows 10 or Windows 11 feature, and do not assume it works with Windows 8+, Microsoft Solitaire Collection, or remakes. Use an offline virtual machine or snapshot-based retro system where possible. Avoid making the change on a work computer, a machine whose file integrity matters, or a shared computer where you want honest game statistics. A backup makes the edit reversible, but it does not make resource editing risk-free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Debug menu an official Microsoft feature?
It is an inactive resource-level menu documented by the original Vista/7 tutorial, not a supported consumer setting described in Microsoft’s game documentation.
Can I undo the modification?
Yes. Close the game, restore the untouched .mui backup, run elevated mcbuilder if necessary, and restart Windows.
Does it work on every 64-bit Windows 7 installation?
Not universally. File locations, language resources, menu IDs, editions, and builds vary; the procedure is documented for the relevant Vista/7 game versions.
Will Windows updates remove it?
They can replace the modified resource, so retain the original and expect to repeat or discard the change after servicing.
