Microsoft Edge’s TranslateEnabled policy controls its built-in translation features. Translation is already enabled when the policy is not configured, so administrators typically deploy an explicit Enabled value to standardize the setting. For a policy intended to cover both Windows and macOS, choose an Edge management service Cloud policy; an Intune policy created through that experience is Windows-focused, not a universal cross-platform setting.

What the Enable Translate policy controls

TranslateEnabled, displayed in Microsoft’s policy documentation as Enable Translate, controls Edge’s integrated translation service. It is a browser policy, not a Microsoft Translator subscription or a third-party extension. When enabled, Edge can offer to translate a page detected in a language the user does not read, and users can access translation from page context menus, selected text, and PDF controls. See Microsoft’s Enable Translate policy reference for supported behavior and configuration details.

When the policy is not configured, translation is enabled by default and users can choose whether to use it. An explicit enabled value is useful for standardization; it is not normally required just to make translation available. A mandatory disabled value turns off the built-in translation functionality.

Check prerequisites before choosing a deployment method

  • Browser version: Microsoft lists Edge 77 or later for the TranslateEnabled policy on Windows and macOS. The Edge management service has a separate minimum of Edge 115.0.1901.7 or later; that is a service prerequisite, not the policy’s minimum version.
  • Cloud policy retrieval: Edge management service policies are assigned through groups and retrieved by users signed in to Edge with their organizational account.
  • Administrator and tenant access: Use an account with the required Edge administrator role. Microsoft says the Edge management service is not available to GCC customers; government-cloud administrators should confirm a supported alternative before following the commercial-cloud portal steps.
  • Profile applicability: Microsoft documents that this policy does not apply to an Edge profile signed in with a personal Microsoft account.
  • Licensing: Requirements depend on the management method and tenant. Microsoft documents an Intune license requirement to create an Intune policy; confirm the applicable requirements for your chosen route rather than assuming one licensing rule covers all methods.

See Microsoft’s Edge management service documentation for current service requirements and policy-management differences.

Choose the policy method for your fleet

Method Best fit Important distinction
Edge management service Cloud policy One Edge policy intended for Windows and macOS, assigned to users through groups Users must sign in to Edge to retrieve the assigned cloud policy. Cloud policies support policy priority when cloud policies conflict.
Intune Edge policy Windows device management where device targeting, exclusions, assignment filters, scope tags, or Intune RBAC matter Edge management service-created Intune policies currently support Windows configuration; do not treat the Windows platform selection as a macOS deployment.
macOS configuration profile Macs managed through an MDM property-list workflow Deploy the Edge preference key TranslateEnabled with a Boolean value. The surrounding profile structure depends on the MDM.
Existing GPO or MDM Organizations whose established Windows or Apple device-management system is authoritative Plan policy precedence before adding a second source for the same setting; conflicting GPO or MDM settings can override Edge management service settings.

Microsoft outlines platform support, targeting, RBAC, assignment filters, and precedence in its Edge management service guidance.

Create a Cloud policy for Windows and macOS

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center with an account that has the required Edge administrator role.
  2. Go to Settings > Microsoft Edge > Configuration policies, then select Create policy.
  3. Complete the Basics stage with a descriptive name, such as Edge - Enable Translate - Windows and macOS.
  4. Choose Cloud as the policy type and select the supported platforms you intend to manage, including Windows and macOS.
  5. In Settings, search for Enable Translate or TranslateEnabled, then set it to Enabled.
  6. Complete any required Extensions stage, then assign the policy to a pilot Microsoft Entra group in Assignments.
  7. Review the configuration in Finish and create the policy. Test with the pilot group before widening the assignment.

Microsoft’s management service instructions describe the current configuration-policy wizard and group-based assignment. A Cloud policy is the relevant choice when the intended scope is cross-platform; confirm the available platform options in your tenant during setup.

Deploy a Windows policy through Intune

Choose the Intune route when Windows device management controls are important. In the Edge policy experience, create a policy with type Intune, select Windows, add TranslateEnabled, set it to Enabled, and assign it to the appropriate users or devices. Alternatively, configure Edge through Intune as described in Microsoft’s Edge with Intune guide.

Configure macOS with an MDM property list

If Mac settings are managed outside Edge Cloud policy, deploy the Edge preference through your organization’s macOS MDM configuration profile. The policy key and enabled value are:

<key>TranslateEnabled</key>
<true/>

To disable it, use <false/> instead. The complete profile wrapper, identifiers, and deployment process vary by MDM; adapt them to your platform rather than copying an example with placeholder identifiers. Microsoft’s Configure Microsoft Edge on macOS documentation covers property-list deployment.

Choose whether the setting is mandatory or recommended

Microsoft documents support for both mandatory and recommended deployment. Use a mandatory setting when the organization must enforce the value. A recommended setting supplies a default that users may override, according to the policy model. If the goal is simply to keep translation available while allowing user choice, remember that leaving the policy unconfigured already enables translation by default.

Verify policy delivery and user behavior

Check Edge’s applied policy

  1. Open edge://policy in the managed Edge profile.
  2. Search for TranslateEnabled.
  3. Confirm that the policy is present, has the intended enabled value, and comes from the expected management source. Investigate any reported conflict or override.

Microsoft recommends edge://policy for inspecting applied browser policies; see its Edge configuration guidance.

Check the user-facing setting

In Edge, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Languages and check Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language I read. For a functional test, visit a page in a language not included in the user’s preferred languages. Edge should offer a translation or expose a translation option in the page context menu. A PDF may expose translation controls through its toolbar or context menu.

Check Windows policy configuration

For a Windows policy delivered through registry-based policy management, inspect HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge for a machine setting or HKCUSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge for a user setting. The value should be TranslateEnabled, type REG_DWORD, with 1 for enabled or 0 for disabled. Microsoft documents the policy value and paths in the policy reference.

Check macOS management

Confirm that the intended configuration profile reached the Mac and contains the Edge preference key with a true Boolean value. Use the MDM’s profile status and device-management tools to distinguish a delivery problem from an Edge policy conflict.

Troubleshoot common failures

The policy is in the portal but missing in Edge

  • Confirm the signed-in user belongs to the assigned Microsoft Entra group and is using an organizational Edge profile.
  • Check the browser meets the applicable version requirement: the service minimum for cloud management, separately from the policy’s version minimum.
  • Refresh or restart Edge during testing, then check edge://policy again. The policy supports dynamic refresh, but a restart can help when a change is not immediately visible.
  • Check whether GPO, MDM, or another configuration policy sets a conflicting value. Microsoft notes that conflicting GPO or MDM settings can override Edge management service settings.

The policy is present but translation does not appear

First confirm the applied value in edge://policy, then test more than one known foreign-language page. Edge offers translation when it detects a page language outside the user’s preferred languages; a page may already match a preferred language or may not be recognized reliably as translatable.

Mac users are not receiving the setting

  • Check whether the policy was created as an Intune Windows policy instead of a Cloud policy.
  • If using MDM, verify that the macOS Edge configuration profile was assigned and installed.
  • Confirm the Mac’s Edge version and, for Cloud policy, that the user is signed in with the expected organizational account.
  • Look for another macOS profile or policy source setting a different value.

A personal Microsoft-account profile is unaffected

Microsoft states that TranslateEnabled does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft account. Verify the policy using the intended work or school Edge profile.

Disable Edge translation when required

Use the same management method that owns the setting and change TranslateEnabled to Disabled. In a Windows registry-based deployment, the value is REG_DWORD 0; in a macOS property list, use a false Boolean. Avoid setting conflicting values through multiple channels. Because this policy controls browser feature availability rather than serving as a complete data-loss-prevention control, organizations handling sensitive content should assess their privacy, data-processing, and regulatory requirements before enabling translation for those workflows.
