How to Set Your Tata Play Remote to Control TV Volume by Default

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On supported Tata Play remotes, press and hold SELECT + VOL+ together. Two LED flashes mean the volume buttons are set to control the TV; four flashes mean they control the set-top box. This selects the volume target—it does not program an unconfigured remote for your TV.

Switch the volume buttons to your TV

  1. Point the Tata Play remote toward the TV.
  2. Press and hold SELECT and VOL+ at the same time.
  3. Watch the remote’s LED: two flashes indicate TV-volume mode; four indicate set-top-box-volume mode.
  4. Press VOL+, VOL− or Mute. The TV’s on-screen volume display should change if the setup is working.

The same shortcut changes the target, so repeat it if you want to switch back to set-top-box volume. Tata Play documents this shortcut for its HD/SD, HD Plus and Binge+ remotes. Check the instructions for your particular remote before using it; the newer Binge+ New remote works differently.

What TV-volume mode changes

In this mode, the volume, mute and related basic TV commands are directed to the television, while channel and guide controls continue to operate the Tata Play box. It is a selected operating mode, not an irreversible lock: changing the mode or programming the remote again can change its behavior. Tata Play describes its remotes as supporting basic TV functions such as power, volume, mute and source, not complete control of every smart-TV feature. See its remote overview.

If the TV speakers are your main audio output, Tata Play recommends setting the set-top-box volume to maximum and using the TV to adjust listening volume. That is a recommendation, not a requirement; an AV receiver, soundbar or other audio path may behave differently.

If the shortcut does not control the TV

The remote must first be programmed for the television. If Tata Play channels still work but volume does not, the TV-control setup may be missing, the volume target may still be the box, or the TV or audio system may not be responding to the command. Check the batteries, aim the remote at the TV, and use the programming method for the remote model.

HD/SD and HD Plus remotes

  1. Turn the TV on rather than leaving it in standby.
  2. Press and hold TV Power + STB Power until the LED blinks twice and stays on.
  3. Point the remote toward the TV. Press and hold the number key assigned to the first letter of the TV brand until the TV switches off. Tata Play says the search can take up to 90 seconds; release the key as soon as the TV turns off.
  4. Test the TV controls, then press SELECT + VOL+ and look for two LED flashes to select TV-volume mode.

Tata Play’s HD/SD instructions, for example, group Sony, Philips and Panasonic under 7 / PQRS, and LG and Lloyd under 5 / JKL. Brand groupings can vary by remote instructions, so check the current HD/SD setup page or HD Plus setup page for your model and brand.

Binge+ remote

  1. Turn on the TV.
  2. Hold SELECT + 6 for about three seconds. Release when the LED blinks twice and stays on.
  3. Aim the remote at the TV, then hold the number assigned to the first letter of the TV brand. Release it as soon as the TV switches off.
  4. Test the TV controls. Hold SELECT + VOL+ until the LED blinks twice to select TV-volume mode.

Tata Play’s Binge+ mapping is: 2 for ABC, 3 for DEF, 4 for GHI, 5 for JKL, 6 for MNO, 7 for PQRS and 8 for TUV; its instructions also list 9 for WXYZ. Follow the Binge+ remote instructions if the search does not work.

Binge+ New remote

Do not assume the older Binge+ infrared programming sequence applies. Tata Play says the Binge+ New remote is primarily intended for its Binge+ smart set-top box and provides basic TV power and volume control on compatible smart TVs through HDMI-CEC. See the Binge+ New instructions.

When brand search fails: learn commands from the TV remote

Tata Play provides a learning method for supported HD/SD and Binge+ remotes. It copies individual commands from the original TV remote, so a successful power command does not necessarily mean the volume buttons have also been learned.

  1. Put the Tata Play remote and original TV remote on a flat surface, about 3–6 cm apart, with their infrared LEDs facing each other. Tata Play recommends fresh batteries in both.
  2. On the Tata Play remote, hold SELECT + 2 until the LED blinks twice and stays on.
  3. Press and release the Tata Play remote’s TV Power button.
  4. Press and hold the corresponding Power button on the TV remote until the Tata Play remote LED blinks twice.
  5. Repeat the learning process for each required command, such as VOL+, VOL−, Mute and AV/source. Learn navigation or select commands only if needed and supported.
  6. After learning, hold SELECT + VOL+ to select TV-volume mode; two flashes indicate the TV target.

Tata Play says four flashes indicate unsuccessful programming. If an individual button fails, repeat learning for that command. Programming another remote overwrites the previously learned functions, so the Tata Play remote retains the functions from the most recently programmed TV remote. See the HD/SD instructions or Binge+ instructions.

Diagnose remaining volume problems

LED response is missing or unexpected

  • Replace the batteries and press both shortcut keys together, holding until the LED responds.
  • Confirm the remote actually has a SELECT key and that its model supports the shortcut.
  • Interpret four flashes as set-top-box-volume mode, not TV-volume mode.

The TV turns off during setup, but volume still does not work

The power command may have been programmed while the volume commands were not, particularly after learning commands individually. Repeat the learning procedure for VOL+, VOL− and Mute, then check the volume target.

The TV responds, but the soundbar or receiver does not

A TV-volume command may change the TV setting without changing the level of audio sent to an external system. Check whether the TV sends sound over HDMI-ARC/eARC, optical, Bluetooth or an analog connection, and whether the TV’s own remote adjusts the external system. The soundbar or receiver may require its own IR-learning or HDMI-CEC setup. Results depend on the specific equipment; Tata Play’s basic TV-control instructions do not guarantee soundbar or receiver control.

Smart-TV controls behave differently

Basic TV power and volume support does not mean the Tata Play remote can navigate every TV app or smart interface. HDMI-CEC behavior also depends on the TV and connected equipment. For Binge+ New, follow Tata Play’s model-specific HDMI-CEC guidance.

The remote no longer controls the original TV

If it was programmed for another TV, Tata Play says the newly learned functions replace the previously learned ones. Repeat the appropriate programming or learning procedure for the TV you want to use.

The Binge+ remote will not pair with the set-top box

This is separate from TV-volume setup and applies specifically to the Binge+ remote. Tata Play says pressing any key after turning on the TV and box can pair the remote automatically. Its published unpairing sequence is to hold SELECT + 7 until the LED blinks twice, release, then press SELECT until it blinks four times. Do not treat this as a universal reset for other Tata Play remotes; consult the Binge+ instructions.
