Meizu began rolling out an Android 10-based Flyme OS 8.1 internal beta on July 21, 2020. The first wave covered the Meizu 16th, 16th Plus, 16s and 16s Pro; six more models were scheduled for a later wave. This was an enrolled-tester beta focused on Chinese firmware, not a confirmed global or stable update.
Why the Flyme 8.1 update caused confusion
“Flyme 8.1” referred to two different releases for older Meizu phones. The Flyme 8.1 stable update released in May 2020 brought Flyme changes but did not itself mean those phones had moved to Android 10. The July release was a separate internal beta that did make the Android 10 platform upgrade. Meizu 17 and 17 Pro owners were a different case: those phones launched with Flyme 8.1 already based on Android 10. Gizmochina’s May 2020 coverage of the stable update and its July beta report describe the distinction.
Phones in the first wave
The July 21 rollout reports identify these four models as the first recipients of the Android 10-based internal beta:
| Phone | July 21, 2020 status |
|---|---|
| Meizu 16th | First-wave beta |
| Meizu 16th Plus | First-wave beta |
| Meizu 16s | First-wave beta |
| Meizu 16s Pro | First-wave beta |
Six more phones were scheduled
Meizu’s announced next group comprised the Meizu 16T, 16X, 16Xs, Note 8, Note 9 and X8. These models were scheduled for the end of July 2020; the schedule is not proof that each received a completed stable Android 10 release. AnTuTu’s report on the beta schedule lists the additional devices.

How the internal-beta enrollment worked
Recruitment was reported as running from June 23 through July 31, 2020. Enrollment was not the same as immediate installation: a phone had to meet the build requirements, the user had to register, and delivery was staged. The reported route was through the System Update app; translated menu wording may differ from the original Chinese interface.
- Install a qualifying Flyme build. June recruitment coverage cited Flyme 8.1.0.0A stable or Flyme 8.20.6.16 Beta. July rollout instructions cited Flyme 8.20.6.30 Beta and a subsequent 8.20.6.30 daily build. These version references come from different points in the process, not one universal prerequisite. (June recruitment report; July instructions)
- Open the System Update application and locate the Android 10 internal-beta recruitment option.
- Register with a Flyme account and complete the beta eligibility or review process.
- If accepted, wait for the internal or daily build to be pushed; enrollment alone did not guarantee instant delivery.
What the beta changed
The defining change was the move to Android 10 on the participating older phones. Reports also described Flyme-side adjustments in associated builds, including home-screen shortcut menus, music notifications, multitasking, dark mode, game mode, app-management controls and search, OneMind optimization, and Aicy assistant features. Those interface and service changes should not all be treated as features unique to Android 10: some belonged to Flyme 8.1 or related daily builds.

Availability and firmware-region limits
Contemporary coverage described a China-focused closed beta and does not establish a global Flyme OTA. In Meizu firmware naming, “A” generally denotes mainland-China software, while “G” is associated with global firmware. A China-market build should not be assumed safe or compatible on a global-model handset: region-specific firmware can affect services, language support, apps and device functionality. Check the exact model and build compatibility before any cross-region flashing. The June recruitment report identifies the program as China-focused.

The July instructions warned of bugs, instability, abnormal functions and possible downgrade complications, and advised backing up data. A beta can also create app-compatibility or device-function problems; do not treat it as a routine stable OTA, particularly on a primary phone. Confirm that a suitable recovery path exists before installing.

The Note 8 and X8 were among the announced planned devices. Later claims that their Android 10 support was canceled are not established here by a direct Meizu notice, just as the original schedule alone does not verify final delivery to every planned model. Meizu’s firmware listing can help check device-specific published records, but a later Flyme 8.1 listing by itself does not show that a particular build uses Android 10.
