The stock Google Camera app on the 8a therefore does not currently offer the still-photo mode. The missing control is expected under Google’s current compatibility information, not evidence of a fault with your phone.
What Action Pan does
Action Pan is a still-photo mode for capturing a moving subject—such as a cyclist, runner or car—with the subject relatively sharp and the background blurred to suggest motion. It is part of Google Camera’s Motion features on supported Pixel models. It is not a panorama, a video mode or the separate Long Exposure effect.
Why Pixel 8a owners expected to find it
Earlier Google support material reportedly included Action Pan in a broader Pixel camera-feature listing. Pixel 8a owners then reported that the expected Motion controls were missing, including in a Google Pixel Community thread. Later coverage described the listing as having been corrected or narrowed; PiunikaWeb’s account documents that history.
The evidence points to inconsistent documentation, not proof that Google deliberately removed a working feature from every Pixel 8a. It does not establish whether Action Pan ever worked on production 8a phones, was briefly available to some users, or appeared only because a general feature list was applied too broadly. Google has not publicly confirmed a future Pixel 8a rollout.

Where the mode appears on supported Pixels
On a supported model, the general route is to open Camera, select Photo, open the Motion controls or mode selector, and choose Action Pan. Frame a moving subject, pan smoothly with it, take the picture and let Google Camera process the result. Labels and placement can vary by Camera app version and Pixel generation. This is not a working setup procedure for the Pixel 8a: Google’s current compatibility list excludes it.

What to check before giving up on the control
These checks can rule out ordinary app or device confusion, but none is a confirmed way to add Action Pan to the Pixel 8a:
- Update Google Camera through Google Play and install any available Pixel system update.
- Restart the phone, then check the Camera mode selector and settings.
- Confirm the model under the phone’s device information; Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8a are different models, and the Pro designation matters here.
There is no verified update or official workaround identified that enables Action Pan on the 8a. Changing region, joining a beta, clearing Camera storage, reinstalling the app or factory-resetting the phone is not an established unlock method; a reset solely to look for this mode is not warranted.

Action Pan, Cinematic Pan and other similar-sounding features
| Feature | What it does | Pixel 8a status |
|---|---|---|
| Action Pan | Still-photo effect that keeps a moving subject relatively sharp while blurring the background. | Not listed for the Pixel 8a on Google’s current Camera Help page. |
| Cinematic Pan | Video stabilization for smooth panning shots. | Listed among the Pixel 8a’s video stabilization features. |
| Long Exposure | A separate Motion still-photo effect that emphasizes movement with blur. | Not listed for the Pixel 8a on Google’s current Camera Help page. |
| Panorama | A wide image assembled by sweeping the camera across a scene. | It is not Action Pan; the distinction is the shooting goal, not the word “pan.” |
Google’s Pixel 8a technical specifications list optical image stabilization, Fused Video stabilization, Cinematic Pan, locked and active video stabilization, and timelapse stabilization. These help with camera or video steadiness; they do not provide Google Camera’s Action Pan still-photo processing.
Options if you want a motion-blur shot
- Try manual panning: In the standard Camera app, follow a moving subject smoothly as you take a photo. The result depends on timing and camera settings and will not be the same as Google’s dedicated Action Pan processing.
- Use a manual camera app: An app with shutter-speed controls may let you experiment with motion blur. Results and controls vary; no particular third-party app is established here as a reliable replacement for Action Pan.
- Edit a photo: An image editor can add or refine background blur, though the effect may require manual work.
- Choose a currently listed model if the feature is essential: Google currently lists the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL for Action Pan. Check the same Google compatibility page before buying, since support can change.
A sideloaded or modified Google Camera build is not a dependable fix: it may be incompatible with the 8a’s camera configuration or unsafe if obtained from an untrusted source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should this change your Pixel 8a decision?
If you already own the Pixel 8a, the absent Action Pan control is not, by itself, a reason to suspect a hardware defect or replace the phone. Action Pan is a specialized effect; the 8a still has its own computational-photography features and the stabilization modes listed in Google’s specifications. Google announced seven years of OS, security and Feature Drop updates for the phone, but that support promise does not guarantee that a particular camera feature will be added.
If you are shopping specifically for Action Pan, do not buy the Pixel 8a expecting it. Select a model Google currently lists as compatible, and verify the exact model rather than relying on a generic Pixel feature list.
