Yes, the OnePlus 6T’s in-display fingerprint reader can work on a custom ROM—but not every ROM, build, firmware combination, or configuration handles it correctly. Some OnePlus 6T LineageOS builds have reported working fingerprint support, while documented bugs include failure to illuminate the sensor when the screen is off. Installing a custom ROM does not by itself prove the sensor is permanently damaged.
Why the OnePlus 6T reader is sensitive to software
The OnePlus 6T uses an optical fingerprint reader beneath the display. OnePlus’s user manual describes the sensor as hidden under the screen and gives the stock setup path as Settings → Security & lock screen → Fingerprint.
An optical reader needs the display to illuminate the fingerprint area. A ROM therefore has to coordinate the sensor service with screen wake, the display overlay and brightness behavior, as well as device-specific hardware components. The LineageOS build documentation identifies the OnePlus 6T by codename fajita and describes the need for device-specific code and proprietary blobs. A ROM can boot while an individual hardware function remains incorrectly integrated.
What “fingerprint does not work” can mean
- No fingerprint setting or enrollment option: The ROM may lack a compatible biometric service or vendor component, or the installation or migration may have gone wrong.
- Enrollment starts but will not finish: This can reflect a software or display-interaction problem, but also a screen protector, display repair, or sensor fault.
- It works with the screen awake but not from the locked, screen-off state: This points toward screen-wake or illumination integration. A LineageOS issue report documents this kind of failure; it does not show that the hardware cannot work on custom ROMs.
- Recognition is slow or intermittent: Display settings, the optical path, enrollment quality, or hardware condition may be involved.
- It stopped after previously working: Check what changed—such as a ROM update, major-version migration, display setting, new protector, or screen repair—before concluding the sensor has failed.
Why results vary between custom ROM installations
“Custom ROM” is not one software configuration. Fingerprint behavior can depend on the project and maintainer, Android version and build date, required stock firmware, clean versus dirty installation, recovery, and later additions such as Google Apps, root, a custom kernel, or display-modifying modules. Carrier variants may have extra installation or firmware considerations.

LineageOS’s fajita build documentation lists development branches across Android generations; that history is not a guarantee that every branch or individual build behaves identically. For example, an unofficial LineageOS 18.1 community build lists the fingerprint scanner as working. LineageOS 19 community reports describe fingerprint recovery after changing Extra Dim settings and re-enrolling, while another report associates reduced color-calibration values with unreliable recognition. These are reports tied to specific configurations, not universal fixes or official guarantees: LineageOS 19 discussion and color-calibration report.
Firmware and device target matter
Some ROMs require a particular stock firmware base. The correct version must come from the installation guide for the exact ROM and build; do not infer it from the Android version shown in Settings or apply a firmware number intended for another device. LineageOS installation documentation for another OnePlus model illustrates that firmware requirements are distinct from the ROM itself: OnePlus 7T installation guide. For the 6T, follow the current fajita guide. Verify the phone is a OnePlus 6T (fajita), not a OnePlus 6 (enchilada), and check any carrier-variant instructions. Troubleshoot fingerprint failure in this order
- Check the basic enrollment and screen states. Reboot. In stock OxygenOS, open Settings → Security & lock screen → Fingerprint; menu labels may differ in a custom ROM. Remove saved fingerprints, confirm a PIN, password, or pattern is set, enroll one finger again, then test once with the screen awake and once from the screen-off lock screen.
- Temporarily remove display variables. Turn off Extra Dim, Reading mode, Live Display, color calibration, unusually low-brightness modifications, and display overlays. Reboot and test. These settings have been implicated in community reports, but are not established as universal causes.
- Rule out add-ons. If the ROM supports Safe Mode, try it. If rooted, temporarily disable custom kernels, display-modification modules, SystemUI changes, and biometric or lock-screen modules. A LineageOS discussion cautions that custom kernels and Xposed can affect bug reports: community thread.
- Check the optical path. Clean the screen and finger. Temporarily remove a thick, damaged, or poorly fitted screen protector, then enroll again. If the failure began after fitting a protector, that timing is useful evidence, not proof of a ROM defect. The OnePlus manual does not certify compatibility for every third-party protector.
- Verify the installation. Confirm the build is specifically for
fajita, matches the installed Android branch, and was installed with the required firmware and recovery. A dirty upgrade across Android generations can leave biometrics broken even if the rest of the system boots; a community report describes fingerprint failure after a LineageOS migration. - Consider a clean install only after backing up. A clean installation may resolve a broken enrollment database or incompatible migration, but it erases user data and is not a universal fix. Use the exact maintainer guide for the device and release. LineageOS’s general installation instructions stress following the device-specific procedure, including its recovery, data-formatting, and sideload requirements. Commands such as
adb devices,adb reboot bootloader,fastboot devices, andadb -d sideload filename.zipoccur in some workflows, but they are not a complete 6T flashing recipe; use them only where the current guide calls for them. - Use stock OxygenOS as a comparison. If fingerprint works on stock but not the custom ROM, software compatibility, firmware, or configuration is the more likely explanation. If it also fails on stock, test without the protector and consider display calibration, repair, or sensor damage.
When to stay on stock or seek repair
If fingerprint reliability is essential for a daily-use phone, choose a ROM only after finding recent reports for the exact fajita build and checking its firmware instructions. Official or documented development offers a clearer support path, but does not guarantee identical behavior in every release. Staying on stock is the lower-risk choice if the phone has a replaced display, an uncertain carrier-variant history, or no recent biometric confirmation for the ROM you are considering.
If the reader fails on stock OxygenOS too—especially after display replacement, or after correct software and firmware have been restored—the issue may be optical calibration or hardware damage. Contact OnePlus or a qualified repair provider rather than repeatedly flashing ROMs. Separately, a working fingerprint sensor does not guarantee that banking, payment, DRM, or other security-sensitive apps will accept an unlocked bootloader, root, or a custom ROM.
