The Indian package was identified as V12.0.1.0.QFGINXM, used Android 10, and targeted the lavender device family. Check the phone’s complete build string and try the normal OTA updater before considering any Fastboot installation.
This is not a current 2026 update announcement. The Redmi Note 7S is now listed in Xiaomi’s end-of-life support information and should not be expected to receive current MIUI, HyperOS, or routine security updates.
What actually rolled out
The original India update story concerned MIUI 12, not MIUI 12.5. Firmware listings identify the first Indian MIUI 12 package as V12.0.1.0.QFGINXM. The package was based on Android 10 and belonged to Xiaomi’s lavender firmware family.

The build identifiers and chronology are catalogued by MIUI ROM and the specific initial-build listing at XiaomiROM. Those are firmware-archive records, so treat them as identification references rather than proof that every handset could download the package on the same day.

Why Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S appear together
In India, the Redmi Note 7S name was used for a model in the same broad lavender firmware family as Redmi Note 7 variants in other markets. That does not make every regional phone interchangeable. A handset bought outside India may use Global, European, Chinese, Russian, Indonesian, or another software channel.
Use the exact model information, codename, and current software suffix—not only the retail name. The suffix usually appears at the end of the MIUI version string:
INXM: India channel.MIXM: generally Global channel.EUXM: European channel.- Other suffixes identify other regional channels.
The Redmi Note 7 Pro is a different phone and must not be flashed with a lavender package. Xiaomi’s Indian product pages identify the standard Redmi Note 7 as a Snapdragon 660 device that originally shipped with MIUI 10 based on Android 9.0: product information and specifications.

Why some phones received it later
The rollout was staged. Two otherwise identical Indian phones could receive the OTA at different times, and not seeing a notification on the first day did not by itself mean the phone was unsupported.
Archive chronology also shows why “Fastboot available” should not be read as “every user could immediately flash it.” For the later Indian V12.0.2.0.QFGINXM maintenance release, the archive lists the OTA package as dated December 11, 2020, and the Recovery and Fastboot packages as dated December 22, 2020. These dates describe listed packages, not a promise of simultaneous distribution to all devices.
Check the official OTA first
- Back up photos, messages, documents, and authenticator data.
- Charge the phone adequately and connect it to reliable Wi-Fi. Keep additional free storage for verification and unpacking, not just the displayed download size.
- Open Settings.
- Open About phone or My device, depending on the MIUI release.
- Tap the MIUI version panel.
- Tap Check for updates.
- If an update appears, compare its full build string and confirm that it matches the phone’s Indian software channel before accepting it.

OTA, Recovery and Fastboot are different packages

Computer-based restoration or advanced flashing |
Fastboot is not a feature-rich or “better” edition of MIUI 12. It is a full software-flashing route. Archive listings for later releases show Fastboot downloads in the multi-gigabyte range and OTA packages substantially smaller; those later sizes should not be presented as the size of the original December MIUI 12 package.

For an ordinary, working phone, usually no. Stay with OTA when the device is unmodified, the bootloader is locked, it is already on the correct Indian channel, and the updater offers the release.

Fastboot can be justified when the phone will not boot normally, an OTA repeatedly fails, the system installation is corrupted, or you are deliberately restoring official software after modification. It generally requires an unlocked bootloader, a computer, compatible USB drivers, Xiaomi’s flashing utility, and the exact package for the handset.

- Assume user data may be erased; make a complete backup first.
- Verify the
lavendercodename, exact model, and regional suffix. - Do not use a Global, EEA, China, or other regional package simply because the filename looks similar.
- Do not interrupt the flash or relock the bootloader with incompatible regional software.
- Modified, rooted, or custom-ROM phones may fail OTA installation and need a dedicated restoration procedure.
- Do not use unofficial bootloader-unlock bypasses.
If the MIUI 12 OTA is missing
- Read the entire version string under Settings → About phone; confirm whether it ends in
INXMor another regional suffix. - Restart the phone and check again over stable Wi-Fi.
- Allow for staged distribution or a temporary pause by Xiaomi.
- Do not sideload a random region package or force a manual transition the updater does not support.
- If the phone is malfunctioning, contact Xiaomi India Support or use the Xiaomi India service portal.
Historical timeline and present support status
The initial Indian MIUI 12 listing was V12.0.1.0.QFGINXM. A later Indian MIUI 12 maintenance build, V12.0.2.0.QFGINXM, followed in the archive chronology, with OTA dated December 11, 2020 and Recovery/Fastboot dated December 22, 2020. The device family later reached MIUI 12.5 on Android 10, but that later release must not be confused with the original MIUI 12 announcement.
Xiaomi’s current security policy says devices on its end-of-life list no longer receive routine software or security updates, and the Redmi Note 7S appears in that support information: Xiaomi Security Center policy. Therefore, current owners should treat MIUI 12/12.5 as the end of this device’s official software path rather than expect a new 2026 rollout.
