The most likely explanations are a navigation redesign, an account or regional test, a staged rollout, or a temporary app problem. First check whether Reels moved elsewhere; then use Instagram’s troubleshooting and reporting steps if the feature is unavailable.
What changed on your Instagram?
These situations look similar but have different explanations:
- The Reels button is gone from the bottom navigation, but Reels still open from Home, Search, profiles or shared links.
- The Reels button moved to another position after an interface change.
- Reels play from an individual post, but you cannot open a continuous Reels feed.
- A Notifications/heart icon occupies the position where Reels used to be.
- Reels are missing everywhere, including creator profiles and shared links.
The first four usually indicate navigation or availability differences rather than deletion of Reels. The final case warrants more troubleshooting.
Is Instagram removing Reels?
There is no evidence of a universal, permanent removal. Meta has continued adding Reels features, including reposts, a Friends tab in Reels and a Map feature, in its August 6, 2025 announcement (Meta announcement).

Meta also announced navigation changes in September 2025: a limited Reels-first test in India opened the app to Reels and placed direct messages in the navigation bar, while a planned simplified design moved DMs to the center and Reels to another tab (Meta’s navigation announcement). That describes tests and planned layouts, not one identical arrangement for every account.
Why Notifications may have replaced Reels
Account or regional experiment
Instagram can show different navigation to subsets of accounts. Community reports confirm that some users have seen Notifications where Reels was, but those reports establish the symptom—not its cause or worldwide prevalence (community report).
Rank #2
Gradual server-side rollout
A redesign may be enabled in stages. Two people with the same app version can therefore see different tabs, and reinstalling may not override an account-level change.
Temporary app or interface bug
Instagram’s troubleshooting guidance says a feature may be unavailable because of a bug or because it has not reached everyone yet (Instagram troubleshooting guidance).
Rank #3
Device-specific layout
Phone, tablet, Lite, mobile-browser and desktop interfaces are not interchangeable. Larger-screen layouts can also change after an update, so describe your exact device when reporting the issue.
Find Reels without the missing button
- Check every navigation position. Swipe or tap through the current bar; Reels may have moved rather than disappeared.
- Open a Reel from Home. Tapping a Reel in your feed may let you continue browsing vertically.
- Use Search/Explore. Look for video or Reels results; labels vary by account and platform.
- Visit a creator’s profile. If the profile shows a Reels grid, tap it to browse that creator’s videos.
- Open a shared link. A Reel sent in a direct message, Story or external app can still launch the viewer.
- Try swipe-based navigation if it appears. Meta’s announced redesign allows movement between Reels and DMs by swiping, but this is not available on every account.
Instagram’s Reels help page provides management information but does not promise one universal menu path (Instagram Reels help).

Work through the problem safely
1. Confirm the scope
- Is only the bottom-bar icon missing, or are Reels inaccessible everywhere?
- Does another account on the same device have Reels?
- Does the account look normal on another phone or tablet?
- Did the change follow an app update, operating-system update, logout or account switch?
- Does it happen on both Wi-Fi and cellular data?
2. Update Instagram and your operating system
Install the latest Instagram release and the latest available iOS or Android update. An update can correct a local defect, although it can also activate a new navigation layout.
3. Restart the device
Instagram lists restarting the phone or tablet as an initial troubleshooting action. It is low risk, but it cannot force a server-side experiment to end.

4. Test both networks
Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If content loads on one connection but not the other, you may be seeing a connection problem rather than a changed account layout.
5. Compare another account or device
| Result | Most likely interpretation |
|---|---|
| Another account on the same device has Reels | Account-level test, staged rollout or account-specific problem |
| Every account lacks Reels on one device | Local app, device, rollout or service issue |
| Your account works on another device | Refreshing the local app may help |
| Reels are unavailable through profiles and links everywhere | Report the problem after basic troubleshooting |
6. Reinstall only when you can log back in
Instagram recommends deleting and reinstalling the app if restarting and connection checks do not help (official guidance). Your profile and photos remain stored by Instagram, but confirm your password and access to two-factor authentication before uninstalling. Reinstallation refreshes local state; it does not necessarily change an account-level layout.
7. Report a missing or broken feature
- Open Profile.
- Tap the upper-right menu.
- Under More info and support, tap Help.
- Tap Report a problem and follow the prompts.
- Attach a screenshot or screen recording of the navigation bar.
Instagram also supports reporting by shaking the phone when that option is enabled. Include your country, device model, operating-system version, Instagram app version, account type, when the change began, and whether another account is affected. See Instagram’s reporting instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not switch between personal, creator and business accounts expecting a guaranteed fix.
- Do not change your birthday, country, privacy setting or use a VPN to force a tab.
- Do not install an old APK, unofficial client or “cleaner” that claims to restore Reels.
- Do not pay an unofficial fixer or give anyone your password, login code or recovery link.
- Do not follow Facebook’s Settings → Tab Bar → notification dots instructions in Instagram. Those reports concern Facebook, not Instagram (Facebook community discussion).
When to wait and when to escalate
| What you see | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Reels works from Home, Search or profiles; only the icon moved | Use the available entry points and monitor the layout; this is consistent with a redesign or test. |
| Only one account is affected | Compare accounts and report it if access is impaired; an account-level rollout is plausible. |
| The icon returns after reinstalling, then disappears again | Treat that pattern as evidence of a server-side rollout or experiment, not a permanent local fix. |
| Reels cannot be opened anywhere | Complete Instagram’s update, restart, network and reinstall guidance, then submit a detailed report. |
There is no documented user-controlled switch that guarantees restoration of Instagram’s old navigation. Placement can depend on account, device, geography and app version, so a changed tab bar does not by itself mean your account has lost Reels.
