A gift can go only to an eligible viewer, and being subscribed or watching live does not guarantee selection. YouTube’s published rules require opt-in, a non-Brand-Account channel, a subscription to the gifting channel, recent interaction, and an available region; existing channel members are excluded. Guidance below reflects YouTube’s help pages checked August 18, 2026.
First distinguish a missed selection from a delivery problem
A viewer may see gifts announced without receiving one for several different reasons. The most common explanation is that they were never selected from the eligible pool: buying multiple gifts creates opportunities for eligible viewers, not a promise that every subscriber, chatter, or preferred person will receive one. YouTube does not publish a complete recipient-ranking or probability formula, so claims that selection always favors the most active viewers, moderators, or people who have watched longest are not established.

Other possibilities are that the viewer was ineligible, the gift was applied but the announcement was missed, or distribution or notification appeared later. YouTube says a gift can still be distributed after a stream or live chat ends. Anecdotal viewer reports also describe delayed or inconsistent experiences, but they do not establish the scale or cause of a service problem. YouTube’s published guidance does not confirm a current widespread gifting incident.
Check the eligibility rules before troubleshooting the app
YouTube’s gifted-membership requirements mean a viewer generally needs all of the following:

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards. Good for use on the US Google Play Store only. Terms apply - see below.
- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Endless games to explore: Find and play old and new favorites – from mind-bending puzzles to epic quests and more.
- Just the app you’re looking for: Millions of apps means millions of ways to get things done, learn something new, and maybe even meet someone special.
- A signed-in YouTube channel that is not a Brand Account.
- “Allow gifts” enabled.
- A subscription to the channel giving the gift.
- Recent interaction with that channel. YouTube does not specify an exact number of days in the cited guidance.
- No existing membership to that same channel; current members are excluded from receiving its gifted memberships.
- A location where channel memberships are available. Check YouTube’s membership availability and creator eligibility information for supported locations and channel requirements.
Watching the exact livestream is not listed as a universal requirement. Watching may count as interaction, but does not replace the other conditions or guarantee a gift. The visible audience count can therefore be much larger than the eligible pool.
Turn on “Allow gifts”
YouTube’s menu labels and placement can vary by device, app version, and account. Try either of these routes:
From a livestream or Premiere
- Open the channel’s livestream or Premiere while signed in to the YouTube channel you want to use.
- In live chat, select “Allow gifts” or the pinned membership-gifting control.
- Turn on the “Allow gifts” switch and confirm.
From a channel or video page
- Open the channel or one of its videos.
- Select “Join,” then open the additional options menu.
- Choose “Gift settings” and turn on “Allow gifts.”
Creators can share an official opt-in URL in this format, substituting the channel’s external ID or channel name:

YouTube documents these formats in its membership promotion guidance. If the control is missing in the app, confirm the signed-in channel and try the channel page or a desktop browser; mobile menus are not identical for every account.
Use this viewer checklist in order
- Confirm the account. Check which YouTube channel is active in the app or browser; it may not be the channel you use elsewhere under the same Google login.
- Check for a Brand Account. YouTube says a Brand Account channel cannot receive a gifted membership. Its gift-membership help page sets out this restriction.
- Verify opt-in for this channel. Open Gift settings or use the channel’s official
/allow_giftslink. If you enabled gifts for one channel previously, confirm your setting for other channels too; YouTube notes that a global opt-in may also be needed to receive gifts from other channels. - Subscribe and interact. Subscribe to the gifting channel and interact with it before the gifting event. The exact recency window is not stated, so there is no reliable number of days to target.
- Check membership status. If you already pay for that channel’s membership, you are not eligible for another gift from it under the current rule.
- Verify whether a gift was applied. Check the channel’s Memberships tab or the “See perks” area on a video page, using the same account that was signed in during the stream.
- Look for the notification. YouTube says recipients get a live-chat notice and an email. Check YouTube notifications and email spam folders, but do not treat a missing email alone as proof that no membership was applied.
- Allow time for distribution. YouTube says distribution can continue after the creator ends the stream or chat. If the control is unavailable, retry from a desktop browser rather than assuming the feature is universally absent on mobile.
How creators and moderators can reduce confusion
Creators should make sure channel memberships are enabled and the channel remains eligible, then give viewers a clear opt-in instruction before gifting begins. YouTube’s membership availability page lists creator-location and channel/content requirements, including restrictions related to made-for-kids status and other eligibility criteria. Sharing the official opt-in URL is a practical way to help viewers find the setting, but no instruction can make a particular person eligible if another requirement is not met.
A useful pinned message is: “To be eligible for gifted memberships, subscribe to the channel, use a non-Brand-Account YouTube channel, and turn on Allow gifts in Gift settings. Eligibility does not guarantee selection.” Avoid promising that a named viewer will receive a gift: YouTube’s community gifting flow is not described as a way to assign memberships to specific people.

YouTube says a gifted membership provides up to one month of channel-membership perks, does not recur, and does not charge the recipient after it expires. Its help page describes gifts as non-refundable and not exchangeable for cash; it also says a purchase is considered fulfilled once the first gift is distributed. A buyer should not assume that a batch guarantees delivery to every intended community member or that a preferred viewer can be substituted after distribution. YouTube’s current help page describes gifts at the closest highest available price level up to and including $9.99; local pricing, taxes, and billing platform can differ.
If your goal is guaranteed access for yourself, the alternative is to join directly through YouTube, where available; that is a paid membership rather than a community gift. YouTube’s membership joining guidance explains that route. Gifted memberships are not a named-recipient transfer system, and there is no legitimate third-party tool that can make YouTube assign one to a chosen account.

When to escalate a possible technical issue
If the opt-in control is absent, first verify the active account and try the channel or video page and a desktop browser. If gifts appear to remain undistributed or an eligible account cannot access perks, record the details before contacting YouTube Support or posting in the Help Community:
- The channel and stream date.
- The number of gifts announced or purchased, if known.
- The YouTube channel/account type and whether it was subscribed, opted in, and already a member.
- The viewer’s country or region.
- What appeared in chat, email, Memberships, or See perks, with screenshots where possible.
Public guidance does not explain every distribution failure, so this evidence can help support assess a specific case; it does not establish a backend outage or guarantee that a gift can be assigned retroactively.
